Mulkey, P It s that time of the year again when most of us receive our Power Squadron dues renewal notice. The newer members receive their notices on their anniversary date. This year National sent those of us with e-mail our first on line notice. This will save the cost of mailings and postage. For your convenience, you can use a credit card. YOU are our most important attribute PLEASE renew your membership! We have had a very large turnout for the last few meetings and when there is food involved we can usually plan on even better attendance. At the March Spring Conference held in Jacksonville several Commanders noted that we are an eating club with a boating habit. There is some truth to that. Many of us no longer own our boats but, if we are physically able, we should make an effort to get out on the water at least once a year. At the last membership meeting Lt. Kermit Forbes, P, made a good point. He suggested that those of you who have boats offer to give rides to those who don t. We would like to develop a list of boaters as well as those who would be interested in going for a ride. The Blessing Of The Fleet is May 22, 2010. You can call P/C Kermit Forbes, P, P/C Duane Balkema, AP, or me if you are interested in attending. At the April meeting I was negligent in my duties. After someone does a job for years, we come to expect it and tend to forget to thank them for their hard work. P/C Susan Kneeland, SN, was responsible for the awards presentation. P/D/C Fred Adame, SN, was in charge of the rosters which were recently passed out. Thanks to you both for jobs well done. SOUNDINGS DEADLINE: THE 10TH OF EACH MONTH We welcome comments, boating stories and any articles of interest you d like to submit E:Mail an Attachment to debra.burleson@bellsouth.net Leonard T. Senibaldi, N receiving his navigator award at the March 2010 general meeting! (last month s had incorrect recognition) 2

3 EXECUTIVE OFFICER LT/C Robert F. Flanigan, SN P/C Lance VanderBerg, P, reported we have 28 Vessel Safety checks so far this year. Lt George Guerrero, S, and his crew set up the booth for the flea market at Harbor Town Marina and George, Lt Marian Sweigart, AP, P/C Larry Hatfield, SN, Cdr. John Mulkey, P, P/D/C Fred Adame, SN, P/C Mike Stone, P, P/C Bud Miller, JN, Lt Donna Longway, S, P/C Jay Longway, P, Joan Montfort, S, Lt Francesca Ragusa, Lt/C Paul Ragusa, P, and Lt Leonard Senibaldi, N, worked the booth Saturday and Sunday. Thanks to all of them! We also signed up 6 people for the next boating class. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER LT/C Joseph S. Auchter, JN In this issue of the Soundings, P/C Duane Balkema, AP, has listed the boating program for the CBSPS for 2010. It is hoped that other Squadrons in our District will join us in some of our activities. Lt Donna Longway, S, has also prepared the Entertainment Activities for 2010. These will also be published in the coming issues of the Soundings. Our next speaker will be Dr. Geoffrey Swain Ph. D, who is a professor at Florida Institute of Technology division of Oceanography and Engineering. Dr. Swain will discuss current developments of marine anti-fouling coatings, which is of great interest to all mariners. He is also working on programs to help the US Merchant Marine and boating industries to operate more efficiently, more safely, and reduce operating costs. This should make our May meeting very interesting. SQUADRON EDUCATION OFFICER Lt/C Paul A. Ragusa, P Advanced Piloting ended in March and all eight persons, who took the course, passed their exams! The Education Dept is working on offering the following courses later this year, Sail, Weather and JN. Once we reach a consensus on the availability of the instructors, and students, we can set a date and arrange for class rooms. Please let me or Asst. SEO Ken Charles, P, know of your interest, and of any restrictions you might have due to travel plans, etc. If you are interested in classes other than the above, make us aware so that we can generate some interest among the rest of the members. 3

4 SECRETARY LT/C Marilyn Flanigan, P At the April 6 th General Meeting, those who attended the meeting, were given their new 2010-2011 Membership Roster. If you did not attend that meeting, please come to the May 4 th meeting to pick-up your new Roster. Come early, 1900, for refreshments & to visit with friends. Meeting starts at 1930. There were some errors in the new Roster. You will receive the corrections, so you can update your own Roster, as we have done in the past. Coco-Nauts Corner President Lt Debra Burleson, S The Coco-Nauts had their luncheon meeting at the Merritt Island Moose Lodge on April 14th, with 15 in attendance. We had a guest speaker, Margaret Rogers, who is one of the founders of Brevard Hospice. She talked to us about what hospice is all about, and what they do. This was very informative to me, since I have not had a loved one, or family member that has been in a hospice care facility, or had house visits by hospice professionals. If anyone would ever like to invite her to one of your other organization meetings, she is available, and can be scheduled via Barbara Spakes, in PR at Wuesthoff Hospital. (321-636- 2211) Our next meeting will be held at the Merritt Island library on May 12th at noon. This will be a brown bag luncheon. We had 2 volunteers that are bringing desserts and drinks will be provided. Ofcourse, this is several months away, but we are planning to have our Christmas luncheon once again at Branos in Cocoa Beach on Dec. 11th @ noon. If you would like your birthday to be recognized in the Coco-Nauts Corner, please call or email me. The only ones I have were collected at the Friendship Meeting or from archived copies of The Soundings. (debra.burleson@bellsouth.net/321-454-3171) May Birthdays 07 - Maggie Woeber 4

Care to Join Their Support Efforts? Please send a check earmarked The Soundings to: Lt/C Marilyn Flanigan, P 1490 Holly Avenue Merritt Island, FL 32952 Boating Chairman Report P/C Duane L. Balkema, AP (321-452-5892) We want your participation, big and little boats, pontoon boats, sail boats and yes row out in the kayak. So please join us in our boating events. This year our Commander has asked that we work with our companion squadrons in education and events. This has been taken into consideration and I have communicated with Titusville and Banana River. Doug Bisset has completed a survey to find out more about active boats and boat events desired by members. Thanks for your efforts. Our years schedule is posted elsewhere in this issue of the "Soundings" for you to clip out and post. May 15, 2010 at the D-23 Summer Council & Picnic there is a "CARDBOARD BOAT RACE" and we should have at least two boats entered. Lt Robert Schaefer is taking lead on this one. May 22, 2010, our first scheduled event, we will join Banana River SPS in their "Blessing of the Fleet" at Dragon Point at the South end of Banana River. Many people enjoy this "Blessing" and the meal that follows at Eau Galle Yacht Club. I myself, much prefer the "Blessing" then to raft-up, as last year with then Lt/C Admin. Gerard Meunier, JN, and CDR Lance Vandeberg, P, each on our boats with guests. Viewing of the event is possible from land on the Pineda Causeway but it is distant. This Blessing may improve you chances of a trouble free season with your boat. Participate by having your boat in the area just west of the extreme point of Dragon Point, the very South end of Merritt Island by 10:30 AM, Saturday. Slowly cruise around and spot P/C Fred Mueller, JN, of BRSPS who will anchor in wait for 11:00 Parade Blessing formation. Then form up and follow. At 11:00 a Police Boat will lead Fred on his boat past the "Blessing Boat" and you will be on VHF channel 69 or by shouting say who you are and the name of your boat and guests. A Blessing is then bestowed and you proceed on by for your Raft-up or to the Yacht Club. There is no fee at all for the blessing and the symbolic event continues a long tradition started by the Greeks. The meal charge is understood to be $19.00, prepaid, and dock space must be prearranged through P/C Fred Mueller, JN, of BRSPS at 777-3416. They really have a fine meal and do it right. Let's have a fine turn-out for this event. June 12, 2010 Saturday we have on the schedule a "Cruise to Marker 21" also joining BRSPS for an event to the South. Big boats can participate as well as small boats. Overnight stay is a plus. Then Saturday, June 26th we have scheduled a "Cruise to Water Ski Island" and Hot Dog/Steak Roast an event to North. BLOOD DONATION The next blood donation will be on 26 May 0900am at the Blood Center on US Hwy. #1. All donations are appreciated!!!! 6
