NCAA TERMINOLOGY Prospective student athlete (PSA): According to the NCAA, an athlete becomes a PSA when: 1) He/she starts ninth-grade classes; or 2) A college gives an athlete any financial aid or other benefits that the college does not generally provide to most students. Unofficial visit: Any visit by an athlete and his/her parents to a college campus paid for by the athlete or their parents. Official visit: Any visit to a college campus by you and your parents, paid for by the college Verbal commitment: A college-bound athlete s commitment to a school before he or she signs (or is able to sign) a National Letter of Intent. This commitment is not binding. National letter of intent (NLI): Official contract signed by an athlete to commit to a college. This is a binding contract. The recruiting process is a year-round project that needs to be tended to on a weekly basis. Just like anything else, the more you put into the process, the more you will get in return.

KEY TIPS: WORK HARD in the classroom and study hard for the SATs / ACTs. BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR ABILITY. The number of players that play at the top Division 1 schools is a very small percentage of the number of college volleyball players across Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and NJCAA. GOOD FIT ACADEMICALLY AND ATHELTICALLY Do not pick a college just because you can play volleyball there. Choose a college or university that is a good fit for you academically as well as athletically. BE PROACTIVE IN THE RECRUITING PROCESS. Create a profile on Sportsrecruits.com and email your profile to your schools of interest. FOLLOW UP Recruiting can be a long process so you need to be patient and persistent. College coaches pay attention to the manner you reply and communicate with them. CUVC athletes are expected to reply to all colleges correspondence within 24-48 hours.

COMMON MISTAKES Level of Play (DI,DII,DIII,NAIA,NJCAA) Waiting for a scholarship Being an overzealous parent (let the athletes do the communicating) Neglecting academics Not playing club volleyball

Coaching Likes Be Coachable (humble, effort, passion) Respond to adversity Listens Cheering on the bench Getting good grades Being yourself Displaying good character Having a great attitude Being a leader on and off the court Willing to play any role that helps the team Loves practice as much as they love the matches When your teams scores, the first people you congratulate is your teammates Respects their coaches and officials Quick to pick up a teammates having a bad day Help new teammates who have less experience Learn and grow from your mistakes, as well as others Confident but not arrogant
