FOUNDATION FOR TEACHING ECONOMICS M E M O R A N D U M TO: FROM: Program Applicant Institute on the Environment and the Economy Donald Fell, Institute Director RE: Application Procedure ----------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for your interest in the HSBC Institute on The Environment and the Economy. Per your request, I am forwarding you an application for the specific Institute site you requested. You will need to do the following to apply for the Institute: - download, complete and mail in the application as noted. (Your signature is required on three separate pages of the application materials.) - enclose with your completed application a $100 refundable deposit check payable to the Foundation for Teaching Economics. (Note: Do not make the check payable to either a Council or Center.) Applicants are taken on a first come basis, so I encourage you to forward your completed materials and refundable deposit check as soon as possible. Each Institute usually fills completely, so the earlier you get your materials in, the better chance you have of being accepted. For your information, there is also a program schedule accompanying the application. Please note the start time for the first day of the program, and plan on being at the program site at least 30 minutes prior to the formal start time. For those choosing to either have a single room or to stay with a guest who is not a program participant, $50 per room for each of the nights of August 1, 2, 3 will be covered by the Foundation for Teaching Economics. The participant must pay all additional expenses. NO OTHER LODGING NIGHTS WILL BE COVERED BY FTE. Additionally, FTE will only make hotel reservations for the three nights of the Institute as noted on this announcement. If additional lodging nights are needed, those lodging arrangements are the exclusive responsibility of the participant, not FTE. Check applicable categories: No, I will not need lodging. INSTITUTE ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE ECONOMY -----a program of the Foundation for Teaching Economics PROGRAM SYNOPSIS --------------------------------- The Environment and The Economy is a 4 - day residential program for teachers designed to help integrate an understanding of environmental issues into classroom discussion. Focus of the program is to present an understanding of how market forces may be used to solve environmental issues. The program is structured as a business conference and incorporates a blend of learning activities including hands-on classroom activities, lectures, simulations and a one-day field trip. All materials and activities have been developed specifically for this program. Key topics covered in the program include: Tragedy of the Commons Wealth creation Endangered species Cap and trade Land use Air and water quality Key concepts covered in the program include: Marginal decision-making Externalities Scarcity Pricing Opportunity cost Incentives Optional: The Institute may be taken for 2 graduate hours credit in economics from Florida Gulf Coast University, a state university in Florida. Grading is S / U. Total cost for two graduate credit hours and one transcript is $200 and must be paid by check or money order at the end of the Institute. Allow 10-12 weeks from end of Institute for receipt of transcript.
