Other cultural and educational events throughout the community and region If you attend another activity throughout the local community or region (such as at Ferrum College, Reynolds Homestead, Danville area, Greensboro area, Roanoke area, etc.), including plays, visiting museums, or attending workshops or special presentations, you can receive one credit for each event (for a maximum of 3 activities for the whole academic year). YOU MUST CONTACT THE SSS OFFICE TO HAVE THE EVENT APPROVED BEFORE YOU ATTEND AND YOU MUST PROVIDE VERIFICATION OF YOUR ATTENDANCE AFTERWARDS. In addition, if approved, you may be required to write a one page essay (to include an introduction, body and conclusion) discussing the event and the pros and cons of attending the event. 2. You can receive one credit for each 4-year college or university you may visit on your own (such as during their Open Houses for new/transfer students, special events, etc. just bring verification of your visit (email from Director of Admissions (using the work email address) to SSS at sss@patrickhenry.edu ). In addition, you may be required to write a one page essay (to include an introduction, body and conclusion) discussing the event and the pros and cons of attending the event. 3. You can receive one credit (for a maximum of 2 activities per semester) for each time you participate in any type of academic assistance/tutoring activity, including Math Lab, Writing Center, study group, individual tutoring, or SmarThinking (must be 2 different types of tutoring, i.e. 1 Writing Center session and 1 Math Lab session or 1 other subject or 1 study group session). 4. Submit article or paper to Writing Center Writer s Block visit the Writing Center web page for more information (www.patrickhenry.edu Student Info Learning Resource Center Writing Center Writer s Block ) You can receive one credit for this activity. 5. You can receive one credit for each videotape you watch and writing an essay of the content of the video presentation and what you learned. The videotapes are available for checkout at the Testing Center desk (1 st Floor LRC) and Patrick and Franklin County sites. You must take your paper for proofreading to the Writing Center (1 st Floor LRC) or Smart Thinking before submitting to our office for credit. Your paper must be typed and must include an introduction, body, and conclusion (minimum length of one page), discussing the video and how the video was helpful to you AND how it was not helpful to you. Turn in both your edited copy and your corrected copy. 6. You can receive one credit (for a maximum of 2 activities per academic year) by conducting an informational interview with someone who is employed in the career field you are working toward. Find out how he/she ended up in that occupation what is their education and background, work experience, etc. Learn what you can about the job requirements, working conditions, and potential for career advancement, and then write a short summary of your interview. You must take your paper for proofreading to the Writing Center (1 st Floor LRC) or use Smart Thinking before submitting to our office (Continue to Scroll Down) Page 4

for credit. Your paper must be typed and must include an introduction, body, and conclusion (minimum length of one page). Turn in both your edited copy and your corrected copy. 7. Are you involved in some type of community service activity through a local agency, governmental office, or your church? Bring us a description of your involvement and some type of verification on letterhead from the sponsoring program. You can receive one credit for this activity. 8. Are you involved in a PHCC student organization or activity for community service (i.e., BSA, SGA, SEEDS, Paralegal Association, ADJ Association, etc.)? Have the faculty/staff sponsor send us an email from their work email address as verification that you have participated in one of the organization s community service activities to benefit campus or community. You can receive one credit for this activity. 9. Do you hold an office in a PHCC student organization (such as: President, Vice President, or Secretary)? Ask the faculty/staff sponsor to send an e-mail from their work email address to sss@patrickhenry.edu verifying your participation as a club officer. You can receive one credit for this activity per year. 10. Do you have suggestions for other activities that you can do on your own that may be appropriate to count toward Supplemental Grant???
