India-UAE bilateral relations Strategic interests of India in the UAE market India-UAE bilateral relations have received impetus from timeto-time. India and United Arab Emirates enjoy strong bonds of friendship based on age-old cultural, religious and economic ties between the two nations. This momentum in bilateral ties helped surpass the traditional areas of collaboration oil, trade and expatriate workers. To tackle contemporary challenges of mutual interest, the two countries signed the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement last year. The traditionally close and friendly India- UAE bilateral relationship has evolved into a significant partnership in the economic and commercial sphere. India s growing interest in the Gulf region driven by its economic and trade ties, energy stakes, and presence of some 7 million Indians in the Gulf (and 2.6 million in UAE), are important factors pushing India and UAE to enhance their engagement. The UAE has a special place even among the Gulf countries due to its syncretic culture, business-friendly atmosphere, willingness to invest in the Indian economy and its important role in maintaining peace and stability in the region. The UAE is among the top investors in India in terms of foreign direct investments. UAE is the 10th largest investor into India in terms of FDI. It contributes significantly to India s energy security and was the fifth-largest supplier of crude oil to India in 2016-17. UAE s investments in India are concentrated mainly in five sectors: Services, Construction Development, Power, Air Transport and Hotel & Tourism. India-UAE bilateral trade India s engineering exports to UAE is valued at US$ 1385.8 million during April-May of the current fiscal 2018-19 registering a growth of 12.42 percent compared to the same period last fiscal. India is the largest trading partner of UAE, while UAE is India s second largest export destination for engineering goods after USA. Trend in Indian exports in the past three years (Value wise) Indian exports of the Focus Products that are going to be exhibited in Arab Health in Dubai 2019 have been maintaining a volatile trend, but overall managed to retain the benchmark
of US$ 9 million from 2015 to 2017. Indian exports to UAE was recorded at US$ 9.8 million in 2015, next scaling up to US$ 12.1 million in 2016 but again sharply falling down to US$ 9.3 million in 2017. Indian exports of these products increased in 2016 from US$ 9.8 million in 2015 to the extent of 23.5% on calendar basis and then falling down by the same percentage of around 23.1% to US$ 9.3 billion in 2017. CAGR showed a decline in exports to the extent of 2.6% which is mainly caused by feeble demand following the economic slowdown in the Middle East due to steep fall of oil price. Economic scenario in the UAE United Arab Emirates is the springboard to Middle Eastern, Africa and Asia for medical device. It is amongst the top 10 destinations for export of medical devices from India. Its manufacturing capability is limited; therefore the market will continue to rely on imported medical devices. Population growth, a growing medical tourism industry, continuous healthcare infrastructure developments, expanding health insurance and increasing health expenditure which are all factors contributing to market growth. Moreover, the GCC s healthcare market has experienced stable growth in the past years, driven by a growing ageing demographic and increased healthcare expenditure per capita. The rising demand of healthcare services paired with restricted supply of healthcare solutions has resulted in governments across the GCC implementing new technologies, systems of care, and considering further partnerships with international healthcare providers. GCC governments continue to invest to modernize and reform its healthcare systems, as well as promote economic diversification in the region. In line with the UAE Vision 2021 National Agenda, the country is aiming to achieve a world-class healthcare system and establish itself as a pioneer healthcare destination in the region and the world. Per the latest research by MENA Research Partners, the UAE s healthcare sector is already witnessing a structural shift with a strong growth forecast in the next five years reaching AED103 billion ($28 billion) by 2021.
