LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Workplace Coordinator, It is with great thanks and admiration that I welcome you to the 2017 United Way campaign. Thank you for taking a moment to read through the Campaign Coordinator Notebook. In the following pages you will find a wealth of resources to help with your workplace campaign. I say with great thanks because you and your workplace are joining our mission to bring neighbors and resources together to collectively fight for solutions to root cause issues like poverty, gaps in public education, access to healthcare and toxic stress that effect so many in Alamance County. We could not do our work without your support. The donations raised during these workplace campaigns account for roughly 80% of the United Way s annual income. More individuals and more businesses choose to make their charitable impact through United Way than any other local non-profit organization. We thank you for entrusting your hard-earned dollars with us. It is with great admiration that I welcome you because I know the challenge you are personally undertaking will not be easy. Nor is it a duty to be taken lightly. It is an honor to lead the United Way campaign at your workplace. That s because this project will impact Alamance County residents who use the programs and services supported by the United Way. These are our friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members. The lives you impact are not halfway around the world; they are just around the corner. This guide is designed to provide you with proven ideas and strategies for conducting a successful, fun campaign in your workplace. Please take them to heart. You are our most valuable resource. It is your enthusiasm and energy that will make the campaign a success. You believe in us. And we believe in you. Please don t hesitate to call any of the United Way staff who can provide you with additional guidance or help along the way. Together, we can accomplish great things and encourage one another to LIVE UNITED. Sincerely, Heidi Norwick, President 3 P age

FAQ S WHAT IS UNITED WAY? Each United Way is local and independent, choosing its funding criteria and priorities to fit the local community. United Way brings neighbors and resources together to fight against root cause issues in Alamance County like poverty, gaps in education, access to healthcare and toxic stress. We raise funds during an annual campaign (July 1-June 30) from corporations, employees groups, and individuals. These funds are invested in United Way programming and in local agency programs to improve lives and build a stronger community. To learn more, visit www.uwalamance.org. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR GIVING? United Way offers payroll deduction for individuals contributing through the workplace. It s easier on your pocketbook since an allotted amount is taken out each time you re paid. United Way also offers the following giving options: credit card gift online (uwalamance.org/donate), stocks, or planned giving. If you have donors who are interested in giving through stock or a planned gift, please call our office at 336.438.2000. WHO DECIDES WHERE MY MONEY GOES? Our Community Impact Team spends weeks, in the spring, reviewing grants and presentations by agencies and hearing presentations given by agency directors. After considering each agency s request, the committees choose how to allocate that year s funds. DOES ALL OF MY CONTRIBUTION GO TO AN AGENCY? 80 cents of every dollar from donations given to our Community Fund supports programs and initiatives managed by United Way of Alamance County. Other costs paid for by those 20 cents are related to our operations and fundraising campaign, including printing of campaign materials, staff, and office expenses. 12 P age
WHY SHOULD I GIVE TO UNITED WAY WHEN I CAN GIVE DIRECTLY TO AN AGENCY? United Way effectively aligns organizations, donors, and volunteers because we have unique perspective of the issues. We convene nonprofit agencies, local government, businesses, education, the faith community and citizens to get things done. United Way also monitors programs that receive grants to ensure they follow sound fiscal policies and provide effective services that have proven outcomes. Careful stewardship is valuable to donors who want their contribution to make the greatest impact, multiplying the effect of your contribution. CAN I GIVE TO AN AGENCY IN A DIFFERENT STATE? Yes, you may designate to any 501(c)3 as long as your minimum gift is $50. A donation to the Community Fund, however, is the best way to help the most people in our community. This is the pot of money that at the end of the campaign is allocated to United Way programming and agencies. Donations to the Community Fund stay right here in Alamance County. 13 P age
