November 1, 2016 MIRAMAR MIGHTY FALCONS ~ YOUNG MARINES In this issue: Veteran s Day Important Dates & Deadlines Communications Report Cards DUE! Ribbons of Interest Stop Overindulging Your Children Servicing Our Community Miramar Color Guard Recruits/Honor Grad/ Iron Mike/Molly Marine Communications: Veterans Day :: November 11th WWI known at the time as The Great War, of3icially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. However, 3ighting ceased 7 months earlier when an agreement was made between the Allied Nations and Germany on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. For that reason, Nov 11th is generally regarded as the end of the war to end all wars. A year later, President Wilson proclaimed 11/11 as the 3irst commemoration of Armistice Day. Remember to check out the Recruit Training Miramar Young Marine webpage for ALL upcoming meetings, training dates, community service opportunities and fun events! Emails often change so we do not depend on that as our primary source of passing on information. https://members.youngmarines.com/unit/miramar/home Important Dates & Deadlines November 5th Young Marines Meeng Recruit Training November 11th Community Service Event: Veterans Day Parade November 12th Community Service Event: Veteran s Day Breakfast November 19th Young Marines Meeng Recruit Training Community Service Event: MCAS Miramar Miramar Young Marines MCAS Miramar Bret Righthouse Unit Commander YM_Miramar@yahoo.com Regimental Young Marine Ball :: Pechanga Resort & Casino Temecula, California - October 22nd A FUN night was had by all who a1ended this year s Young Marine Ball. MIRAMAR MIGHTY FALCONS ~ YOUNG MARINES POSITIVE PARENTING - by Jill Rigby www.familylife.com Overindulging Your Children What do your children really need from you? Love, guidance, shelter, food, clothing, medical care, and an education. That s it! Everything else is a want, a luxury: video games, ipods, cell phones, the latest fashion whatever new item their friends have. Today, far too many parents fall for the nag factor. They know their kids are bombarded by ads telling them to buy certain products and that many parents are buying those products for their children. They know the pressure that comes from their children s peers, and so they buy their kids far more stuff than they can even use, all in the hope that their children will 3it in and be accepted by their peers. According to a recent survey of youth commissioned by the Center for a New American Dream, the average 12 to 17 year old who asks a parent for products will ask nine times until the parents 3inally give in. For parents of tweens, the problem is particularly severe; more than 10 percent of 12 to 13 year olds admit to asking their parents more than 50 times for products they ve seen advertised. Kids have learned if they nag enough for long enough, parents will give in. Visit the Family Life website (http://www.familylife.com/articles/topics/parenting/ foundations/character-development/stop-overindulging-your-children) for more mation.
