Statements & Search Criteria Mission The mission of Naples Backyard History is to partner with our community colleagues to ensure our unique cultural history is accessible as we promote, preserve and provide educational experiences to the residents and visitors of Naples and Collier County. Background Naples Backyard History was founded in 2007 from the desire to save history. Our declaration was to lead the way in defining sustainable solutions to promote our area s unique identity, character and history. Our intention was to showcase all of the cultural and heritage areas in both the City and County that gives our community its meaning. CEO/Executive Director Statement Our current and most important initiative: Naples Backyard History, Inc. a 501 (c) 3 organization is working with renowned Miami Archaeologist Bob Carr and Naples Ocean Engineer Todd Turrell to uncover the age and mysteries of the ancient Indian Canal that crosses under streets, homes and businesses in Old Naples. More than 1000 years ago the canal ran from what is now 9th Avenue South on the Gulf of Mexico to near 13th Avenue South on Naples Bay. The canal functioned as safe water passage for canoes navigating from the Gulf to the Bay and river. Radiocarbon dating analysis indicates that the canal was in use from circa A.D. 700 to A.D. 1500. More precise dates are part of the ongoing research effort, which will include sub surface excavations "digs" to carbon date additional organic matter from the canal and to uncover any artifacts that lay in the bottom. South Florida is the only place in North America to have these types of canals, and there are only a few in existence. It is very special to have this gem in Naples. - Bob Carr, Archaeological and Historical Conservancy, Inc. Programs Programs Naples Ancient Indian Canal Description Long-Term Success Examples of Long-Term Success Target Population 1 Target Population 2 With funding provided by private donors, ground penetrating radar was brought in to verify the canal's exact location in December 2013. In February 2014, archaeologists from the Archaeological and Historical Conservancy (under the direction of Bob Carr) completed extensive excavation of a segment of the canal. Five soil and plant samples were recovered from a site on Gulfshore Blvd. in Naples. Samples were taken for radiocarbon dating, providing a range of dates from as early as A.D. 700 near the bottom of the canal to A.D. 1400 at the top. The later date likely represents a time after the canal had been abandoned. Naples Backyard History, Inc. has worked with the City of Naples to erect two historical markers illustrating the route and canal facts. When additional funding is obtained, we plan to do at least 1 more excavation to fully reveal a cross section of the canal in an area where artifacts may be uncovered.there are also plans to create a virtual 3D view of the canal including the indian settlements that likely occurred along its length, particularly at the Gulf and Bay interfaces where significant villages may have existed. This is a work in progress as we await for the first of the historical sign markers to be approved and installed by the city. The historical significance and tourism promotion for this unknown gem is highly beneficial to all of Collier County. Impact Goals What are your organization's long-term strategic goals? Naples Backyard History has set their primary focus on educating residents and visitors of the important history which developed Naples into more than just a hunting and fishing village. The historic roots of Naples began with Native American Indians leading in to the pioneering families which settled the area in the late 1800's. Naples is a vast area encompassing all of Collier County and so it is our goal to preserve, protect and educate with regard to the entire community and not focus simply on one specific region or historical entity. Strategies What are the major strategies you will do to accomplish your goals? Naples Backyard History will accomplish our goal of educating residents and visitors by the following: - Installing historical informational markers along 3 points of the of the Ancient Indian Canal route. Funding needed for final marker. This step will increase tourism to the area by promoting this relatively unknown and rare gem. - Installing ceramic ground markers designed by a student along the path of the Ancient Indian Canal. This will allow tourists, school groups and residents to follow the route. - Maintain and update Indian Canal website, Naples Backyard History website, NOVH Naples Online Virtual History website for all historical documentation covering all aspects of Naples History. - Launch Naples Sunrise/Sunset webcam website for residents and visitors to view modern day paradise thus promoting tourism and generating potential advertising income which will be distributed among partner non profit organizations. - Build and update social media, email communications, publications and articles, lecture series and community outreach. Capabilities What are your organization s capabilities for doing this? NBH has worked very closely with city officials and appeared before City Council to approve and install the historical sign markers. The Mayor has endorsed the project with great enthusiasm realizing the important impact this project will have for the community and tourism. Indicators What indicators do you use to measure progress? Our progress will be validated when the markers have been installed by the City. Progress will continue when we move forward with next step of the installation of ground route markers. Both are a very visual confirmation of the progression of the projects. Press announcements and media coverage will play an integral role in documenting these gifts to the community. Progress 5
What have and haven t you accomplished so far? Naples Backyard History has already secured funding for 2 of the sign markers which will be installed by spring of 2015 in locations on Gulf Shore Blvd where the canal exited in to the Gulf and the intersection of Broad Avenue and Third Street South. Artwork designed by a Naples High School student representing the ceramic ground markers has been chosen. Funding and approval pending on the remaining aspect of this project. Indian Canal, NOVH and Naples Backyard History websites are all launched and operational. Funding in progress for completion of the Naples Sunrise/Sunset webcam project. A large private donation was secured enabling us to begin the initial work on completion of the projects. A NBH fundraiser extended the funding allowing us to complete several phases of all initiatives. 6
