Introduction The objective of the nomination policy is to provide governance of all nominations and award criteria and related administration. The policy deals with nominations for The Institute of Internal Auditors (SA) to positions in IIA SA structures, awards, honorary membership and nominations to international committees. Purpose The policy will deal with the following: Annual awards Nomination to local Board and related committees Nomination to IIA Inc committees Annual awards The purpose of the awards is to: To recognise and reward excellence and professionalism in internal audit To attract and retain high calibre members to the profession To motivate members towards continual improvement The performance and contributions will be rewarded in three categories namely: Internal auditor of the year award Best contribution to the internal audit profession in South Africa Educator of the year award The nominations committee may, where necessary, recommend any special recognition to the Board. Participation should be offered to all members and relevant stakeholders and reminders should be sent at reasonable intervals during the year. Reminders should be sent with award criteria to members and stakeholders. The criteria for these awards are as follows:
Internal auditor of the year 1. The Nominee must have been instrumental in introducing innovative audit tools, techniques, or methodologies in his/her organisation. There should be a willingness to have an article published on the subject. A brief paper on the subject should accompany the nomination, and/or 2. The Nominee must have successfully developed a 'partnership' with management and the Board (Audit Committee) of his/her organisation, thereby substantially improving the credibility of the function, by demonstrating his/her ability to assist management in the assessment of risk, providing control assurance and promoting good corporate governance, and/or 3. The Nominee must have contributed to the IIA (SA) through active participation at Board or Regional level, by having articles published on topical subjects in local or overseas internal audit related periodicals, or making presentations on topical subjects at local or international level etc. 1. All members are eligible to receive this award. 2. Preference will be given to nominees who have attained or are studying towards CIA status. 1. Only members of IIA SA can make nominations. 2. Nominations must be submitted on the date agreed. 3. At least two character witnesses in addition to the person nominating the individual will be required. 4. Background check e.g. criminal record, adherence to CPD requirements must be checked. 5. An interview (telephone/face-to-face) by the Nominations Committee. 6. The member submitting the nomination must give a detailed explanation on how the above was achieved.
Best contribution to the internal audit profession in South Africa In this category both internal auditors and individuals outside of the profession will be considered. In the case of internal auditors, the individual must be a member of the IIA SA in order to be considered for the award. 1. The individual or organisation must have made a noteworthy effort towards enhancing the reputation and standing of profession in South Africa. The person nominating is expected to describe these efforts, and 2. The individual or organisation must have achieved peer acknowledgement of leadership/competence/contribution to the profession, locally and/or internationally. 1. All individuals and organisations are eligible to receive this award. 1. Only members of IIA SA can make nominations. 2. Nominations must be submitted on the due date as determined by the Institute. 3. At least two character witnesses in addition to the person nominating the individual must be submitted. 5. An interview (telephone/face-to-face) by the Nominations Committee. 6. The member submitting the nomination must give a detailed explanation on how the above was achieved.
Educator of the year award 1. The nominee/nominee organisation must have made a noteworthy contribution which significantly enhanced the educational standing of internal auditing profession in South Africa. 2. The individual must have made a contribution to the IIA. 1. For individual nominees preference will be given to nominees who have attained or are studying towards CIA status. 1. Only members of IIA SA can make nominations. 2. Nominations must be submitted on the due date determined by the Institute. 3. At least two character witnesses in addition to the person nominating the individual. 5. An interview (telephone/face-to-face) by the Nominations Committee must be conducted. 6. The member submitting the nomination must give a detailed explanation on how the above was achieved. Adjudication of Annual awards 1. If nominees do not meet the specific criteria attached to each award, the Committee will reserve the right not to award. 2. The Nominations Committee s decision will only be final once approved by the Board. After Board approval no negotiations will be entered into. 3. Eligible members of the Nominations Committee can be nominated for an award, provided they take no part in the adjudication process. 4. The nominations committee will conduct a verification process for all nominations to confirm eligibility and authenticate nomination details. This will include but not limited to interviews with identified individuals. 5. Adjudication will be done by the nominations committee.
Nomination to local Board and related committees 1. Nominees should hold a senior internal audit position in the institution where they practice internal audit, or have recently practiced internal audit. 2. Nominees should have at least five years experience in internal audit. 3. Preference will be given to nominees who have attained or are studying towards CIA. 1. Only members of the IIA SA can make nominations. 2. Nominations must be submitted on the due date determined by the Institute. 3. At least two character witnesses in addition to the person nominating the individual must be submitted. 5. An interview (telephone/face-to-face) by the Nominations Committee 6. Where the Nominations Committee makes recommendations to the Board in terms of the Chairperson s casting of proxy votes, the following criteria should be taken into consideration: a. Current composition of the Board b. Skills and experience needed c. Constituent representation d. Gender representation e. Race representation f. The candidates ability to adhere to the required time commitment g. The candidates being members in good standing
Nomination to IIA Inc committees for IIA SA endorsement/support 1. Nominees should hold a senior internal audit position in the institution where they practice internal audit, or have recently practiced internal audit. 2. Nominees should have at least five years experience in internal audit. 3. Nominees must have served the IIA and/or its regional committees for at least 5 years. 4. Preference will be given to nominees who have attained or are studying towards CIA. 5. Nominees should at least have served two terms on local structures. 6. Nominees must be committed to give feedback to the IIA SA on committee activities. 1. Only members of the IIA SA can make nominations. 2. Nominations must be submitted on the due date determined by the Institute. 3. At least two character witnesses in addition to the person nominating the individual. 5. An interview (telephone/face-to-face) by the Nominations Committee should be conducted.
