There are multiple ways that you can sponsor team 3229. Some possibilities include, but are not limited to: Money Supplies Equipment Food Workspace Mentors 5
Team 3229 was formed in 2010 by a small group of students who were determined to work together and build a robot, even though none of them had any experience working on such a complicated project. Through long hours, many trials and even more errors, their success in building a robot laid the foundation for future teams in years to come. These determined students created a long lasting tradition of excellence and hard work that is still prevalent today in Holly Springs High School Robotics Team Hawktimus Prime. Hawktimus Prime prides itself on not only successfully building a robot, but teaching high school aged students skills that will stay with them for years to come. Skill such as teamwork, leadership, perseverance, planning, time management, and dedication are just a few examples. Students also learn engineering skills that they can carry on to their future careers. Hawktimus Prime is split up into two major teams with subteams within the major teams. The major teams include the Build Team and the Administration Team. The subteams within the Build team are Mechanical, Electrical, Safety, and Programming. The subteams in the Administration team are Public Relations, Sponsorship, and Treasury. Build Team: Mechanical- Builds robot Electrical- Wires robot Programming- Codes robot Administration Team: Sponsorship- Raises money Public Relations- Outreach Treasury- Handles money Safety- Makes sure people are being safe Students are the only ones who plan, prototype, build, and run the robot. Members work closely with math, science, physics, and technology teachers to learn as much as they can in order to put as much knowledge into the robot building as possible. 6
Team 3229 does not stop at building a robot. Hawktimus Prime is all about giving kids from all walks of life a chance to learn about and experience technology in a way they may not have been able to otherwise. Over the past five years, the team has influenced the lives of thousands of school age kids. By exposing kids to the possibilities that science and math can offer today, they are influencing the next generation of innovators in years to come. But how does a group of high schoolers create such a wide range of influence on kids all around the world? The answer comes from years of giving back to the community. Holly Springs High School has worked closely with the robotics team at Oakview Elementary and the surrounding community for two years now. Young Adult Mentors (YAMs) are people in team 3229 that volunteer their time to help the middle schoolers build their robots for the First Lego League (FLL) competition in November. As of 2017, team 3229 has helped mentor 225 kids through FLL and Yaming. In 2011-2012, the team wired and donated solar panels to students in Haiti to help power their laptops so that they could attend school. In 2013, the team raised money to buy solar powered lamps to send to Haiti so that Haitian citizens and volunteers could see at night. In 2014, the team put together an activity book for lower socioeconomic families. Included in the book were STEM-themed mazes, coloring pages, connect the dots, and other fun activities, as well as crayons. We donated these to the Holly Springs Food Bank for families to pick up when they came to get food to help entertain their children. Every year, team 3229 has an Eighth Grade Day where members show eighth graders what we do and how we do it. This is done primarily to help spark an interest in math and science as they prepare to enter high school, but also recruit new members for our growing robotics team. Hawktimus Prime also runs many demos outside of meetings for the rest of the community to see. Members drive the robot and answer questions for people at restaurants, schools, and other public places. 7
FIRST stands for: For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology First is not-for-profit public charity founded with the purpose:...to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. (Mission Statement: usfirst.org) Every year, FIRST sponsors competitions all over the United States where schools are to build a robot for a specific game and compete against other robots. The branch of competition that Holly Springs High School competes in is know as First Robotics Competition (FRC). FRC is the most rigorous competition level that FIRST offers. Participants have only a few weeks to build a completely functional robot that also follows all of the rules of the game. Last year, the game Hawktimus Prime competed in was call FIRST Steamworks. The goal of the game was to shoot wiffle balls into a boiler and to gather gears from one end of the field and deliver them to the other end for a human player to collect into an airship. At the end of the match, each team could climb a rope to earn extra points. For more information on FIRST/FRC: usfirst.org usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc 8
