NO WAKE ZONE Lake Mohave Sail and Power Squadron A Unit of the United States Power Squadron Bullhead City, AZ May, 2012 General Membership Meetings Are Held The Second Wednesday Of Each Month At A Location To Be Announced. The Meetings Start At 1800. Executive Committee Meetings Will Be Held At 1700 At The Same Location And Date. Commander s Corner Ahoy Everyone! District 28 Educational Officer Congratulations to Bob Kelly! District Commander Mark Keltner sent word to D/28 Bridge members last week of Bob s acceptance by National as our new District 28 Educational Officer. D/C Keltner is also requesting that squadron Educational Officers attend the D/28 Council meeting in Chula Vista on June 2, 2012, so they can meet Bob. I ll see you in Chula Vista, Bob! Welcome to your new position! The squadron is proud of you! Inland Rendezvous at Katherine Landing/Lake Mohave Thanks to all who attended and contributed toward the great weekend we had with members from Phoenix, Oceanside, and elsewhere, during our Inland Rendezvous April 20-22. If you were not there, you missed great food and good friends! Please read Sharon Weller s report for an in depth review and photographs. ABC Class Graduation Please read Mike Accardo s report on the awesome ABC Class and the graduation last Saturday, April 28. Mike had a tremendous turnout for his class and now we have new members to invite to our meetings and activities.

National Safe Boating Week Activities (May 29 through May 26). Watch for notices regarding activities and signups to join during this all important week. This is a nationwide program so let s get out there and advertise our presence in the Tri-State! Just for Fun it s all in the Perspective! Occasionally I get asked what kind of boat my son has, and I am sure some of you are also curious as to what it is I hang out on when I am actually hanging out on the water. Well, here she is: Waller s Lil Boat It s a beautiful Laveycraft, a wonderful boat made right in our hometown of Corona, California. Yes, it does go fast and we all love it. Yesterday, while enjoying lunch with my family at Pirate s Cove on the Colorado River, another boat came into a slip close to us. Obviously, we are in the foreground, not the one that didn t fit in the slip! Waller Boat In The Foreground 2

Hummmmm, perhaps she came from the Lake Havasu Shoot Out? Big Boat!!! Here s another view, just so you can take this into perspective! Would I if I could? At first glance, the answer was No Way but after a while, Yep, I would if I could and with a great big grin on my face! Prayers for the Family and Friends of the Sailors aboard the Aegean Please send your heartfelt prayers and good thoughts to the family and friends of the sailors who were lost while participating in a Newport Beach, California, to Ensenada, Mexico, regatta when they met with a tragic accident on April 29, 2012. For further information and a video of the rescue efforts, please refer to the USPS website, Coast Guard news. That s it for this month. Keep up the good work and I will see you at the GMM on May 9 th. Safe boating to you all.cdr Jo Anne Waller 3

Executive Officer s Report As this goes to press the Seamanship class is going strong. We will have a final follow-up session on May 15 th and schedule the tests for later in the month. All students are doing really well. I would like to say what a good weekend the D-28 Inland Rendezvous was. Fun and fellowship was had by all both on Friday evening at the social hour and again on Saturday evening s BBQ, not counting the whole day Saturday on the water. A big thanks needs to go to Sharon Weller for her work in planning the event with the folks from Phoenix. Please don t forget Safe Boating Week this month..lt/c Bob Kelley Education Officer s Report Our Boating Safety course format of two four hour Saturday sessions has again proved to be effective in imparting knowledge and objectives to new students as evidenced by the high passing rate last year and this year. Thank you to John Militello for urging us to try this format and move away from an eight week, 1 hour a week schedule. What works for the students is pre-registering and receiving the course material preferably at least 2 weeks prior to the first session. They come to the first session having read Chapters 1 and 2 and completing the review exercises. This prepares the students to orally present learned objectives during a Power Point presentation. This is followed by a two week study period for chapters three and four. The second session mirrors the first session and includes an exam, distribution of certificates, and a celebration dessert where some power squadron members drop by to say hello. 4

The Spring ABC-3 Graduation Class: (L to R) Brendan Kutz, Brent Kutz, Betty Payne, Larry Payne, Darline Merritt, Patrick Merritt And SEO Mike Accardo. Blaise Militello Is Pictured In The Front Row. Graduates Amber Johnson and Jeremy Keating Hitting The Books SEO Mike Accardo Assisting Students This spring there were 15 registered students. Six students cancelled, postponing classes until the fall session due to personal reasons. The nine students who passed and received their certificates are now Trial Members of the Lake Mohave Sail and Power Squadron. Special congratulations to two of our youngest students, 13 year old Blaise Militello and 14 year old Brendon Kutz..SEO Mike Accardo 5

Administrative Officer s Report The April General Meeting was held on Wednesday, April 22, 2012 at the El Rio Restaurant. There was a great turn out for this meeting and we welcomed guests, Justin and Denise Moore. Even though Justine and Denise did not renew their membership, a national effort is in place to try to keep ex members involved in Squadron events, hoping they will renew their membership. El Rio continues to provide excellent service and good food for our meetings and we are looking at once again using this location as a regular meeting place. The 2012 Inland Rendezvous was a great success. The weekend began with a Welcome Party on Friday evening under the shade trees at the Katherine Landing Motel. We shared great snacks, beverages and conversation. There was a gentle breeze on Friday evening that helped cool us down from the hot temperature. LMSPS Squadron members that attended were, Mike and Barb Accardo, Pat and Barb Bramble, Dave and Maureen Evans, Vic and Jane Kearns, Bob and Bev Kelly, John and Jean Militello, Al and Eileen Trueman, Jo Anne Waller, and Joe and Sharon Weller. Attending from Oceanside, CA were Jerry and Marilyn Porter, and from Phoenix, AZ were, Bill and Connie Johnson, Dan, Kim and son Peter Sheen, Chuck and Jane Peterson, John and Pat Yount, Bonita Gibson with daughter Kimberley Wimberley and grandson Austin Estep. Members Enjoying The Afternoon Sun Joe Weller (L) And Vic Kearns, Jane Kearns (Far Right) Saturday morning breakfast at the Katherine Landing restaurant was a great time to plan our activities for the day. Four boats braved the somewhat windy morning and got on the lake by 10:00 AM. The Happy Puppy piloted by Jerry Porter with passenger Marilyn and the Aquastar piloted by Dan Sheen with passengers, Kim, Peter, Chuck and Jane Peterson, blasted all the way to Willow Beach, AZ. The #1 Seven Crown rental piloted by Bill Johnson with passengers Connie and Emma the dog, as well as passengers John and Pat Yount, Bonita Gibson with daughter Kimberley Wimberley and grandson Austin Estep and the SheepNTrees piloted by Joe Weller with passenger Sharon Weller and JoAnne Waller, explored the shoreline around Telephone Cove, and had lunch at Cholla Cove. After lunch, Bill s boat continued up the lake to the power lines, down to the dam and then back to the Katherine Landing marina. SheepNTrees made a short day of it and went back to the marina around 1:30 PM. 6

The Johnson Clan And Passengers The Aquastar Making A Run Up The Lake Emma Taking A Swim HOT & HOT were the words for Saturday night! Temperatures were reported to be 105 by 4:00 PM with a breeze under 5 mph. The group met under the ramada at the Katherine Landing picnic area for an evening BBQ. After grilling various meats, we enjoyed a pot luck dinner. As the sun set, we began to cool down and we were all happy to see the temperatures cool to 90 degrees. Thanks to Dan Sheen for bringing the lights and generator so we could party after dark. The Park Ranger stopped by to let us know that the snakes were out and feisty so he recommended we stayed near the lighted area and not venture into the darkness. After that warning, the party broke up and folks went back to their motel rooms and homes. 7

We had a great weekend and big thanks go out to everyone that attended and helped make this event a success. Upcoming Events May General Meeting May 9, 2012 at El Rio Restaurant. Watch for an email. Ski Pass Cove Clean Up early May. Pat Bramble will let us know what the date will be. Birthdays The editor always enjoys the birthday announcements for May because of the rare situation regarding SEO Mike Accardo and his wife Barbara. Barb and Mike have enjoyed a long and, from the constant smile that they both display, happy marriage AND they share the same birthday; so, a special happy birthday to them on May 5 th. Our other celebrants this month are: XO Bob Kelly.. May13 Cdr Jo Anne Waller.May 23 Best wishes and many happy returns to them all. Members Corner Zebra and Quagga mussels according to an article in the April/May issue of Boat U.S. Magazine researchers have come up with a way to use the mussel s extraordinary filtering abilities against it, which for the first time could provide a means for large scale eradication without collateral damage. Under study for more than 10 years, a bacterium that is toxic to both mussel species but harmless to all other life forms has been tested and approved in a commercialized version. The bacteria itself is the toxin and kills the mussels while native mussels are not affected.p/c Pat Bramble Editor s Notes Pictures in this issue were provided by Sharon Weller and Jo Anne Waller. We want to wish Al Trueman a speedy recovery from his recent elbow surgery. 8

The No Wake Zone is a publication of the Lake Mohave Sail And Power Squadron. P/C Andy Pensavalle, Editor. Lake Mohave, located along the borders of Arizona and Nevada, is one of a series of reservoirs that control the Colorado River water flow between its head waters and the Gulf of California. Lake Mohave was formed with the completion of Davis Dam in 1951 and put into service in 1952 as part of a Colorado River water agreement between the United States and Mexico. The Lake Mohave Sail And Power Squadron was formed in 2006 in response to the needs of area boaters for boating safety education and to enhance their boating experience.
