Snowflakes lit up the ceilings and walls giving the room a warm and festive feel, and as always the food was delicious, the photo booth was a blast, and several lucky staff members took home some great prizes. Unfortunately we were missing some of our friends in ORS and the Comptroller s Office due to a last-minute dilemma that needed immediate attention. We are so sorry to those who had to stay back, and we re very appreciative of your hard work that afternoon and always. You were all missed! In addition to the holiday party, there were several fundraisers that our division participated in over the holiday season including food, winter coat, and toys drives. We d also like to thank those departments that took part in the Adopt-A-Family program. Those participating departments were ORS, Office of the Comptroller, Financial Systems, Global Support Services, and Risk Management. As always, the Division of Finance showed their commitment to the community at large! In addition to ORS, Risk Management, and Global Support Services, the Office of the Comptroller and Financial Systems worked together to adopt a family through the University of Pennsylvania Adopt-A-Family program. Their assigned family was a mother and father with seven children and one on the way. The generosity of these offices was overwhelming. They provided almost every item that was on the family s wish list. Pictured above are the gifts they gave to their adopted family. Franklin Building Lobby Wall Hangings Central to many aspects of university business, the Franklin Building sees a great deal of student, staff and visitor traffic over time. As a result, there has been much wear and tear in the lobby which also needed some updating to make it more welcoming to students, staff and visitors who pass through, and employees who call the Franklin Building home. As a result, Michelle Brown-Nevers asked for volunteers for an art committee. Members include: Lourdes E. Brolly, Marlene Bruno, Mary Clarke, Kate Micklow, William Ricksecker, and Jackie Smith. The Committee was chaired by Karen Bartley and co -sponsors were Jackie Smith and Marlene Bruno. This committee met weekly to brainstorm, then oversee to completion this project, while keeping to budget. Over the course of several weeks, they met and presented Michelle Brown-Nevers several proposals. These proposals culminated in a re-branding of the Franklin Building lobby in partnership with with Gary Lindauer at Fidelity Graphics and with Michaela Ahearn and Helen Bradley from Development and Alumni Relations to include elements that remind everyone of the mission of both the university and specifically the staff who occupy the building while connecting back to the students. The lobby features a stylized portrait of Benjamin Franklin painted by Gibbs Connors (www.gibbsconnors.com), a prominent Philadelphia artist who works primarily with signage and exhibition graphics (Cont d on p.2)
Franklin Building Lobby Wall Hangings (continued) commissioned all across the United States. This image provided by Penn s Graphic Designer Travis Smale, accompanies Ben s quote, An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest. A fresh nickel-styled directory will help visitors in the absence of the concierge who brings vitality to the space. Portraits of graduates from many areas of the university will remind students of their end goal. Images of campus headlined by the Penn Compact 2020 slogan look forward to another successful campaign initiated by Amy Gutmann, University President, and part of the mission upheld by employees. It also bonds students to this time in their academic careers and alumni. The lobby rounds out with a simple image of the compass on Locust Walk bringing a taste of a favorite outdoor area to the lobby while bridging it back to the campus at-large. 2013 Annual Report The University s fiscal year 2013 Annual Financial Report is completed and available online in e-book format. Online access is available on the Vice President for Finance and Treasurer s website at the following link: http://www.finance.upenn.edu/vpfinance The theme for the report is the Making History campaign, which culminated in FY13. The annual report celebrates this historic and transformational achievement, as well as providing the usual financial commentary and year-end financial statements. SRFS Mastery Students Event The Penn Workplace Mentoring Program, which is sponsored by Penn Volunteers in Public Service at the Netter Center for Community Partnerships, brings 20 seventh graders to campus once a month and gives them an inside look into the careers of Penn administrators. The program, which began in 1993, pairs 20 students from the Mastery Charter School s Shoemaker Campus in West Philadelphia with a staff or faculty mentor from Penn. This month the students were paired up with our very own, Michelle Brown- Nevers. On January 16th, several SRFS staff members participated in a panel discussion and meet and greet with these students in the SRFS Executive Conference Room. SRFS staff members involved were Karen McKoy Holland, Mark Pilacik, Gwendolin Randolph, Jason Cronk, Nichole Davis Moore, John Rudolph, and the SRFS senior leadership team. Career paths were discussed as well as an explanation of what the Division of Finance does here at the University of Pennsylvania. Steve Golding even came down to introduce himself and meet the students. The event was very well received by all, and the students sent thoughtful and appreciative thank-you notes.
