2017 Carey Cauley Jr. Memorial - Community Service Scholarship The scholarship award amount is $1,000 Deadline: Friday, May 19, 2017 The giants of the Civil Rights movement are well-known---martin Luther King, Jr., Medgar Evers, Ralph Abernathy, Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall and so many more. Less well-known, but perhaps even more important, are the unsung heroes of the struggle for equal rights and social justice, the men and women who spent their lifetime working to ensure that all Americans are treated fairly and have an equal chance at achieving the American dream. Carey Cauley Jr. was one such individual. A man of eternal optimism who dedicated his life to others. He was committed to education and public service as a teacher, a minister, for many years as President of the local Branch of the NAACP and for 14 years Brazos County Commissioner - Precinct 4. Mr. C (as he was lovingly called) helped countless students on the road to success, teaching them that life is about hard work and taking advantage of the opportunities that come along. He was low-key, but his message was powerful. He displayed an ability to listen to everyone, to empathize with them and to speak out for those who felt they had no voice. They had no more effective advocate nor better friend then Mr. C. Because he never let the color of a person skin determine how he saw them. He always looked inside to find the real person, the person he could relate to and work with. He dedicated his life to education, public and community service. Because of his humanitarian efforts we, the members of the NAACP Brazos County Branch are proud to announce the Carey Cauley Jr. Memorial Community Service Scholarship. The scholarship award amount is $1,000 and will be awarded to the student who demonstrate financial need, academics, leadership, citizenship, and community involvement (volunteerism). Education was the equalizer then and it still can be. Carey Cauley Jr. 2
