About the Presenter Patricia J. Boyer, MSM, RN, NHA has more than 30 years of professional health industry experience. Her areas of expertise include long-term care and subacute operations, state and federal compliance programs, and performance improvement process development. She also worked for a national nursing home company, where her roles included Director of Nursing Services, Administrator, Quality Improvement Specialist and Director of Regulatory Compliance. In these roles, Pat used the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) to improve survey outcomes and facility processes. She has extensive experience in evaluating facility processes, documentation systems, and developing performance improvement plans to improve efficiency and effectiveness of facility systems. Pat has conducted numerous workshops on related topics at the national, state, and local levels. Her recent experience includes conducting RUGs-based Medicare and Medicaid operational assessments in nursing facilities. Pat authors the monthly Ask the Payment Expert column in McKnight s Long-Term Care News. About the Program CMS has made many changes in the MDS and RUGs system over the years. Now in 2017, we are still challenged with correct coding of the MDS and what documentation supports the coding to ensure proper reimbursement. This session will also address industry trends and struggles in the MDS world. We will discuss the MDS Hot Spots that are being identified in RAC review and other medical review activity. Participants are encouraged to submit questions and concerns prior to the workshop to karenl@nchcfa.org if there are specific issues they would like addressed. Discussion will also review the financial implications of the RUGs system, SNF VBP, the Quality Measures and identify strategies you can implement to make sure you maintain accurate reimbursement. Learning Objectives: Identify the status of the RUGS IV and MDS systems and any changes that have occurred in the last few years Determine how the MDS drives the Quality Measures and SNF VBP Discuss MDS Hot Spots being reviewed by RACs and Medical Reviewer Describe strategies for appropriate management of Medicare Part A Reimbursement using the MDS 3.0 Agenda 8:30 AM Registration 9:00 AM Program begins 12:00 PM 1:00 PM Lunch 3:30 PM Wrap-up and Evaluations Note: There will be one 15-minute break in the morning and one 15-minute break in the afternoon.
