My name is Kaitlyn Bernarde and I am the new Marathon County 4-H Program Coordinator! You may recognize me from being a previous Marathon County 4-H er (Matthiae), 4-H summer intern, and most recently Wisconsin Valley Fair Administrator. Thank you to everyone who has made me feel welcome this past month it is greatly appreciated. I am excited to be able to work with the great volunteer leaders and youth members to carry on the successful tradition of the Marathon County4-H Program, and assist it to keep growing into the future. As we head into the busy summer 4-H season, there will be numerous informational meetings, as well as, fun opportunities for youth to showcase their year-long projects, and continue to learn by doing. I encourage all parents, volunteers and officers to send me information and photos of what clubs, members, and volunteers are doing. Whether it is a youth trip, club service project, awards, or project meetings we want to see it! Thank you again for your continued support of the 4-H Program. Upcoming County Programs Do you want to be a 4-H Volunteer leader? In order to be recognized as a 4-H volunteer leader (organizational and/or project) in the Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development program, all adults age 18 years and over must participate in the Volunteers in Preparation (VIP) Training. The primary purpose of this process is to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants. You may contact our office if you have any questions. At 715-261-1230. If you need VIP training, two will be held at the UW- Extension, 212 River Drive, Wausau on: Tuesday, June 5, 2018 6:30 8:30 PM Or Thursday, June 7, 2018 12:30-2:30 PM Please register at! 2018 Chasin Clovers Fun Run/Walk at the Wisconsin Valley Fair! The Fun Run is back, but will be on Sunday of the Fair. Save the date to participate or volunteer on Sunday, August 5, 2018! The Wisconsin Valley Fair is Looking for Workers! The Wisconsin Valley Fair is looking for workers to set up 4H facilities, perform cleanup during the fair and to clean the buildings and grounds after the fair. Employment runs from July 23 thru August 10, 2018, Pre-fair and post fair hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Hours during the week of the fair vary depending on needs of the fair. Pay is $7.25/ hour, payday is after the fair clean-up is complete and the checks will be mailed to you. If you are under age 16, work permits will be required and you will be reimbursed the cost of the work permit with your pay check. WI 4-H Opportunities Area Animal Science Days (AASD) Regional animal science educational opportunities available to Wisconsin 4-H members. Specifically, Area Animal Science Days is a series of four day-long events held around the state in June where youth in the beef, dairy, horse, sheep and swine projects increase their decision making skills and knowledge of animals through judging and grading experiences. Events include evaluation of dairy cattle, horses and meat animals; dairy showmanship contests; hippology (the study of horses); and oral reasons workshops. In addition, each site offers a variety of workshops for small animal projects, which may include rabbits, poultry, dogs, cats or llamas. AASD strives: To increase the availability of educational opportunities in the 4-H Animal Science Projects. To increase decision making skills through judging and grading experiences. To increase the knowledge of animals through breeding and market evaluation and management information. 2018 AASD DATES/LOCATIONS: June 22 Clark County Deadline to Register Changes to Youth Expo at Wisconsin State Fair ACTIVITY STATIONS Admission will be provided to participants (youth and adult) Will assist with Fair Camp program Apply online at: https://wismis.fairmanager.com/ CLOTHING REVUE Open to youth ages 12-19 years of age Youth no longer need to be selected at a County Level Clothing Revue Show Apply online at: https://wismis.fairmanager.com/ DEMONSTRATIONS Program has merged into the Performance Department MINI PERFORMANCE Has been merged into the Performance Department PERFORMANCE (formerly known as Music & Drama) Any size group welcome; there are no longer size distinctions between large and mini Counties no longer need to nominate a group or alternates; groups will self-apply There is no limit to the number of groups which can apply from a particular County Any Music & Drama acts (individuals or groups) must submit an audition video posted on YouTube as part of the application process Apply online at: https://wismis.fairmanager.com/ Applications must be submitted no later than June 1st Individuals and Groups of 10 or less will receive $30 per participant, paid directly to each participant for a one day performance Groups of 11 15 members will receive $450 payable to the Group for a one day performance Groups of 16 plus members will receive $550 payable to the Group for a one day performance PROJECT EXHIBITS Trifolds, posters or standing displays will no longer be accepted. WI 4-H Opportunities Great Wisconsin 4-H Opportunities for You! Several Japanese, South Korean, and Mexican summer inbound exchangees are waiting for host family assignments. Do you know anyone who d be interested in this great opportunity? If so, please tell them about the exchange but tell them to hurry these great young people will be assigned soon! See the attached list of available young people who are coming to Wisconsin this summer who still need hosts. Tuesday, July 10 th, 2018 Waushara County Fairgrounds, Wautoma, WI Plan now to participate in the State 4-H Plant Science Day event to be held Tuesday, July 10 th at the Waushara County Fairgrounds in Wautoma. Youth in grades 3-13 can test their knowledge about plants while learning how to judge and identify a wide variety of plant specimens. Youth can also compete in photography, speaking, poster and floral arranging contests. Marathon County 4-H Spotlight The Rib View Ramblers donated over $500 to the Never Forgotten Honor Flight in February. Members from local American Legion and the NFHF attended their club meeting. The money was raised from their Community Fair they held last November. Cultural Arts Project Leader organized a countywide Needle-felting workshop in March. Eight members and adult leader volunteers attended. They manipulated wool to make cute animals! Jacky is planning on holding a similar event in the future. The Marathon County Senior Skillathon Team took First Place at the Wisconsin 4-H Quiz Bowl and Skillathon contests on March 3. They will attend the National contest in Louisville in November. Members from left are, Kailen Smerchek, Stephanie Witberler, Cortney Zimmerman and Emilie Pauls. Courtney Zimmerman, Emilie Pauls, Stephanie Witberler, and Kailen Smerchek were part of the top-ten ranked over Senior Skillathon Individuals. Josh Leonard and Alison Leonard placed in the top-ten overall for Mixed Skillathon Individuals. Marathon County also brought home the Mixed Quiz Bowl Reserved Champions title. Team members included from left, Mason Heise, Katelyn Schmitt, Alexa Leonard, Alison Leonard and Josh Leonard. They answered oral questions about beef, sheep, swine and meat-goat topics. Update or Change Information If you move, switch emails, or get a new phone number please update your information on 4-H Online! This is how we communicate with you on opportunities, requirements, and cancellations. Transferring to a Different Club If you want to transfer to a different club, please contact the UW-Extension office. If you just select a new club in 4-H Online and delete the old one, your projects may be lost, or you may have other problems with your membership. If you are moving to or from a different county, the UW-Extension office in current county can arrange the change, but please contact the Marathon County office too. Register for Events To make enrolling easier, and all in one place, more of our county-wide programs will be enrolling through 4-H Online. This gives us your Health Form, so we don t have to ask you for it for every event, as well as, allows your information to stay with you across numerous years.
