CHINOOK Volume 11, Issue 1 Newsletter of the Chinook-Calgary Section September 2011 President s Message Dear AACEI Chinook-Calgary members and supporters, I would like to start off by saying thank you to all my board members and directors for allowing me to serve as president for the upcoming year. I have been part of the AACE Calgary Chinook Section for the last 7 years and strongly encourage new and ongoing participation with this wonderful team! As the new year commences in September 2011, I am excited to present to you our plans for this year. The goal is to provide a technical dinner program that provides topics of interest and to provide seminars and workshops that meet the needs of our cost engineering and project management professionals. I would like to reinforce that you being our audience have a lot of influence over what topics and seminars our board lines up for the year. Please contribute to the success by emailing us your thoughts and/or suggestions on what presentations you would like to see in the upcoming future. We kick off our year in September with Project Controls 101 seminar, which will be presented to you by Deborah Clark, who is a Senior Enterprise Risk and Governance Manager at Suncor Energy Inc. This seminar will give you a broad overview and touch all aspects of estimating, planning and scheduling, change management, cost management, and risk management. We have decided to present this session after hearing your feedback from last years workshop series. We have finalized our dinner meeting schedule and are pleased to welcome Paul Williams, Vice President with Pathfinder who will be presenting, The Owner s Project Control Plan. This presentation will focus on the Owner s function in the Project Controls process with emphasis on relationship between Owner s PC function and Contractor activities. The presentation will also address the Owner's Project Control resource needs for multiple small plant project environments and also PC team needs for large to mega-scale projects. Mark your calendar September 28, 2011 1 st AACE Dinner meeting. AACE International has launched its Mentoring Program at its Annual Meeting in June 2011, in Anaheim CA. If you are interested in being a potential mentor or mentee, please review the online orientation at http://www.aacei.org/career/mentor/mentoring_presentation/player.html. This presentation explains the roles of the mentor/mentee, and outlines the expectations of both parties outset by AACE. This new program will give you step by step instructions on how to structure a successful mentoring relationship with manuals & online support. We need all interested and qualified members to become actively involved to achieve this program s full potential. We have tried to provide most information relating to these events in the newsletter and we will be working to ensure that our website is up to date with current information. We have tried to make the registration for workshops, and seminars easy with one point of contact. All registration will be coordinated through Bindu Amin, who is our Director of Certification and can be contacted via email at: certification@aaceicalgary.org. (Registration forms are attached below for sign up) Thank you all for your continuous support and I look forward to seeing you at the dinner meetings and workshops. The Owner's role is to verify that the project status reflects actual project conditions. This presentation will focus on the Owner s function in the Project Controls process, with emphasis on: Relationship between Owner s PC function and Contractor activities Owner s role in overall PC process Importance of Project Control Plan (PCP) as function of overall Project Execution Plan (PEP) Necessity of communicating Contractor PC requirements in RFP and final contract The presentation will also address the Owner's Project Control resource needs for multiple small plant project environments and also PC team needs for large to mega-scale projects. Examples of effective project reports will be shared and discussed. Speaker Profile: Paul Williams has more than 30 years of Project Management and Project Engineering experience working for Owner and Contractor organizations in the Petroleum, Chemical Process, Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Microelectronics, and Food & Beverage industries.
