SPRING 2014 RACSC Contact: Bob Rhinesmith RC 81 Rutgers Alumni Club of South Carolina A chartered organization of the Rutgers University Alumni Association A Message From the President 1 President 3350 Lauderdale Lane Sumter, SC 29154 845-527-5520 Email: bobrhines@aol.com Inside this issue: A Message from the President Dave Churchill Remembered Fall 2014 College Fairs The RACSC Adds New Ravin* Mem- Rutgers Students from SC Save the Date - Big Ten Fans Gathering 1 2 3 3 4 4 I am so sad to report that our esteemed past President, Dave Churchill, RC 1952, past away this past November. Dave had many accomplishments during his life. He published our first Club newsletter over 17 years ago when he took over the Presidency of our Club. Dave was passionate about Rutgers and in particular about our young people who applied to and attended Rutgers. He was always a hands-on, leader who was results driven. The first RACSC Newsletter was published 16 years ago, and two editions have been published each year since except for last year. In that first issue the lead item stated that over 700 Rutgers graduates were residents of the Palmetto State, a number which has grown to over 1,800. A list of the RACSC Executive Committee members included President, Dave Churchill, RC '52, Summerville; Vice-President, Karl Engelman, RC '55, Hilton Head; Secretary, Janice Karesh, DC '45, Charleston; Treasurer, Ray Frisch. ENG '45, Charleston; Bob Johnson, RC '41, Johns Island; Deane Oliver, RC '56, Johns Island; and Don White, RC '43, Johns Island. Sadly, Janice, Ray, Bob, Deane, and Don have all passed. These loyal alumni were the founding members of the Rutgers Alumni Club of SC (RACSC). Three of them were members of the greatest generation, serving in World War II; Bob and Ray as naval officers in the South Pacific and Don as a combat infantry officer in Europe. At Rutgers Don played varsity lacrosse, Bob was manager of the football team, and Deane wrestled. He retired many years later as the long-serving coach of the Rutgers wrestling team. Where We Live 5 Recent Alumni Gatherings Representing Rutgers at the Fall 2014 College Fairs 5 6 In that first issue, the RACSC recruiting effort was also featured - an active student recruitment program has been underway statewide under the leadership of Dave Churchill. A group of dedicated alumni volunteer recruiters has represented Rutgers at more than 40 selected public and private high school college fairs. A list of the recruiters included Bob Andrews, RC '56, Salem; and Rich Bigger, RC '69, Greenville. Remarkably, Bob and Rich are still active recruiters and this past fall continued to represent their alma mater. Dave was in replaced in 2012, by Isle of Palms resident Dan Kubek, ENG '68, as coordinator of the program. This edition of the newsletter includes the names of this year's alumni volunteer recruiters and the fall college fairs which they attended. The inaugural issue also listed the names of 17 SC undergraduates then enrolled at Rutgers, including two whose fathers were Rutgers graduates, and made the following statement about a student scholarship fund - Having been successful in recruiting outstanding students and student-athletes from this state, the club would now like to initiate a scholarship program to assist an outstanding Palmetto State student at Rutgers. One year later the first RACSC Scholarship (then worth $500) was awarded to Darlington resident Sterling Victoria Jones, a graduate of the Mayo Magnet High School. This award, now known as the Robert E. Johnson Scholarship and worth $1,000, has been granted every year since that first winner was announced in the fall of 1997.

RUTGERS ALUMNI CLUB OF SOUTH CAROLINA PAGE 3 3 FALL 2013 COLLEGE FAIRS I would like to congratulate the members of RAVIN, led by Dan Kubek, for their tireless efforts and commitment to the future of Rutgers students and Rutgers University on the whole. They could use your help. They attend dozens of fairs each year in the pursuit of attracting talented, capable SC high school students to our University. The good members of the South Carolina RAVIN (Rutgers Alumni Volunteer Information Network) turned out in force to represent Rutgers at high school college fairs in South Carolina. From early September thru early November, 33 college fairs were attended throughout the state in the areas of Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Hilton Head, Greenville, Rock Hill, Clemson, and Aiken. Literally many thousands of high school seniors and juniors attended these college fairs, being exposed to as many as 100 colleges in one place. By far, most of the colleges represented were from SC and the adjoining states, with only a few from the Northeast or Midwest. But Rutgers was one of them, and this could only be accomplished through the gracious and energetic volunteer efforts of our RAVIN Alumni, with stellar support from the Admission Office in New Brunswick. Both the faculty and guidance counselors at the schools were quite pleased that Rutgers was there, and the students were intrigued and interested that an academic & arts & sports powerhouse near NY City came all that distance to speak with them. This is aligned with the Admissions Office objectives of seeking geographical diversity in the student body at Rutgers. The college fairs attended and the RAVIN Representatives handling each event are provided in the table. So why do so many of our Alumni expend their time and effort to prepare for and then conduct a college fair? Well, a part of it is showing their Rutgers pride and camaraderie we had 8 new Alumni step forward this year when they heard this opportunity existed they wanted to be a part of it. THE RACSC ADDS NEW RAVIN* MEMBERS Recognizing a need for additional alumni volunteer recruiters to back up current members and provide assistance at large centralized college fairs, new RACSC Recruitment Coordinator, Isle of Palms resident Dan Kubek, ENG '68, asked Alumni Relations to publicize the RAVIN program to Rutgers graduates in selected areas of the Palmetto State via broadcast e-mails. This effort succeeded in adding the following alumni to the program: Ed Rigtrup, RC '72 Seabrook Island Alan Taber, RBS MBA '01 Coosaw Creek Deatra Gabriella, GSED '76 Pawleys Island Eric Hanson, RC '65 Summerville Don Tomasik, CC '67 Mt. Pleasant Carol Rutgers, DC '66 Bluffton Each of these new alumni volunteer recruiters represented their alma mater at one or more 2013 college fairs. This edition of the RACSC Newsletter lists all the fall college fairs at which Rutgers was represented and the alumni who attended them. *RAVIN Rutgers Alumni Volunteer Information Network
