Knight Life Grand Knight Brad Istas 972-618-2639 abcs.istas@verizon.net Chaplain Fr. Bruce Bradley 972-596-5505 BBradley@eseton.org Deputy Grand Knight Jim Goode 972-968-7515 Jim@TheGoodesHome.com Inside this issue: GK Report 1 General News 2-7 Schedule 8-10 Brothers, Grand Knight s Report Brad Istas I trust that you and your family had a Blessed Christmas and that you are experiencing the joy of Christ in your life. Every time I write my report it seems like I make some reference to how fast time is passing and this report is no exception. I can t believe all that has happened. Since my last report, Council #7850 has sold tamales, checked in parishioners for the photo directory, prepared breakfast for the children with Santa Claus, cooked hamburgers for the youth, held our annual tootsie roll drive, prepared and served breakfast for our parish, picked up trash, and served our parish by participating in the many ministries and organizations that serve the Catholic Community of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. I am honored to serve as the Grand Knight of a council that is as engaged in the community as Council #7850. A special thanks to all of the event chairmen who organize, lead and make all of these events successful. As always, I encourage all of you to be an active member of the council. Even if you can t work as a volunteer you can join in and provide moral support to the council. We are working very hard toward keeping the meetings interesting and moving along. Attending a meeting is a great way for you to meet and socialize with other Catholic men. Council meetings are usually on the second Monday of the month starting at 7:30pm. We meet to pray the rosary at 7:00pm just prior to the meeting in the FFC Chapel. Come and pray with us. Continued on page 2 Knight of the Month for December Chip Curtis Knight of the month for December 2015 Is Chip Curtis. Chip stepped up this year to play the role of Santa Claus at this year s Mothers and Others Breakfast With Santa. Chip did such a great job that I think he has locked up this position for years to come. Thru the years lots of guys have put on a Santa suit but very few have put on the Santa suit and become Santa to the young children. Chip also volunteers with the Knights breakfasts. Family of the Month for December Scott and Rosalie Mackinaw Family of the month for December 2015 Is Scott Mackinaw. Scott is the Council #7850 Youth Director. In December Scott, with the assistance of his daughter Angellina, served as chairman for the C.R.E.W. cookout. Scott and his family are active members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. You will often see Scott s younger daughter serving at Mass. Council 7850 www.kofc7850.org Page 1

Grand Knight s Report Cont. from page 1 I would like to challenge all of us to keep the Christmas Spirit alive. Let us be Christ to all of the people we meet. Let us look for Christ in other people. Let us strive to make a positive difference in the lives of all we come in contact with. Don t forget to visit our web site to see all of the activities our council is involved in. There is something there for everyone. www.kofc7850.org Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. Thanks for all you do in supporting our Catholic Faith and each other. God bless you and your families, Brad Istas, Grand Knight Council #7850 New council Members and advancement Please join us in congratulating Brian Shofran (L) who joined #7850 on Thursday night, December 3rd in an initiation at Our Lady of Angels Parish in a moving 1 st degree ceremony. Brian is eager to get involved in council activities and to begin working on his Shining Armor Award, so be sure to contact him about volunteering for programs and events. Also in attendance was Steve Gumm, who as his sponsor, is ready to lend his support and encouragement to Brian. So when you see him at meetings and activities, wish him well and offer your friendship and support. Also join us in congratulating two of our members who achieved full knighthood at a Major Degree on Sunday, December 6th. Neal Pappion and George Ezeugo (L-R) were in a group of 22 first degree candidates from around the area who became knights in the 3 rd degree during a moving ceremony at Council #799, in Dallas. The day started with mass at St. Patrick s parish on Ferndale, close to KofC hall. Included in the group were two priests who took their degree by observation. The group as a whole was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. As full knights, Neal and George learned more about the two principles of Unity and Fraternity while renewing their dedication to our faith, and strengthening their commitment to helping others through acts of charity and service. Attending the degree in support of these two brother knights was Dan Zechmeister. When you see our newest 3 rd degree knights at meetings and council activities, be sure to wish them well and give them a much deserved pat on the back. And during our business meeting, December 14th, Allen Arayakitipong (L) transferred to #7850. Allen moved here from Atchison, KS. He was sponsored by Brad Istas. Please make him feel welcome by inviting him to participate in our events and activities. Dan Zechmeister Council 7850 www.kofc7850.org Page 2

Breakfast with Santa This event, sponsored by Seton Mothers and Others, returned after being absent for the past couple of years. You could tell by the faces and actions of the younger others that they were glad it was back. Brother Chip Curtis had the special honor of playing Santa Claus this year. There were also games and music. John Carlson chaired the event and several brothers (Ron Harabis, Tom Juneau, Paul Krebs, Bob Kennedy, Jim Goode, Danny Nutt, and Justin Frerich and his wife Sarah), squires (Andrew Brisano, Jack Belyeu, Danny Ryan, and candidate Diego Guzman) and members of the Ladies Auxiliary (Connie Istas, Carol Goode, Lillian Stankunas, Cheri Nappo, Suzanne Victorine, Patty Carlson, Carmen Haas, and Marvel Washington) joined in to cook sausage and pancakes, prepare beverages and serve for the event. Squires Counselors Greg Ryan, Steve Champion were also there to assist (Paul Krebs and Bob Kennedy are counselors, too). Mothers and Others also provided fruit and cookies for the breakfast. According to John Carlson we served approximately 200 people. John appreciated the muscle getting stuff in and out of his truck and the willingness to work outside in the weather. He thanks Chip for being one of the best Santas he has seen. Chip worked both shifts non-stop and didn't even get anything to eat all morning. He knows there are lot of children and parents very happy because Chip decided to step up and play Santa. Well done all. John Carlson C.R.E.W. Dinner We were invited back again this year to cook for a C.R.E.W. Dinner. C.R.E.W. (Confirmed Radically Empowered Witnesses) is a valuable and important part of the Seton youth program and we have learned that our hot grilled hamburgers are considered a treat by these young adults (they typically have pizza which, we hear, gets old after awhile). Chaired by Scott Mackinaw our cooks, wrappers, and runners included brothers Brad Istas, Bob Brennan, Larry Ciske, Jim Goode, and Bob Kennedy. Angellina Mackinaw also assisted in the setup and serving. Several other brothers Council 7850 www.kofc7850.org Page 3

were there and are involved with CREW as adult advisors and include Joshua D PenhaD Souza, Ricardo McKay, Jamie Apt, and Fr. Russ Mower. Brisk Cool Weather with Sunshine Greets our December Plano Clean-Up Crew The Knights and Squires worked together on a clear brisk morning with sunshine for the bi-monthly Plano Cleanup held Saturday, December 19 th, 2015. 16 Knights plus Theodore s daughter, Melissa, split into two teams for the Plano Roadways with one team working Spring Creek Parkway from Independence to Custer Rd and another team working Custer Road from Parker Road to Spring Creek Parkway. 3 Squires and 4 adult leaders also cleaned up the Church grounds in preparation for the Sunday celebration the following day. The Knights of Columbus involvement in the Plano Cleanup is great exercise and an excellent reflection of our commitment to supporting the community. The Knights enthusiasm is a clear indication of Council #7850 support for our city s Live Green in Plano through the Adopt-A-Highway campaign. Brother Knights and family working the Roadways Saturday included: John Carlson Jim Goode Leo Murphy Steve Ousey Ron Harabis Dennis Healy Brad Istas Richard Mott Joe Petrie Larry Ciske Dave Kistner Derek Leonard Steve Gumm Dan Zechmeister Theodore Odoemene Melissa Odoemene Squires and Counselors working the Church Grounds included: Anthony Brisano Jason Champion Michael Champion Paul Krebs Greg Kennedy Steve Champion Greg Ryan (Counselors) Thanks to all these participants who helped lighten the workload. Hoping you and your families had a Merry Christmas and have a Blessed & Safe New Year. Dave Kistner Tootsie Roll Drive The Tootsie Roll drive this year took place on two Saturdays, 12/5 and 12/12, and included brothers collecting donations at 5 different McDonald s restaurants. We worked 2 time shifts at each location, and a total of 58 brothers and several grandchildren participated. We would be remiss if we did not thank Brother Chuck O Reilly, owner of these restaurants, and manager Marty Warburg, for allowing us the opportunity to stand there. Chairman Ed Stankunas informed us that we had another great year with donations and, as a result, will be able to help many charities with the collected funds. Potential charities could be the American Council 7850 www.kofc7850.org Page 4

Recent Tornado Disaster Recently, the neighboring cities of Garland and Rowlett were struck by tornadoes. A call for cleanup help came from the Council at St. Paul s Parish. The picture top left shows some of the destruction. Pictured top center is the Rusli family, and pictured top right is 3 generations of the Wilson family. These were some of the people responding to the call. Parish Directory In addition to helping with signups for the directory photos, the council also helped register people for their photo sittings. The council, along with all sizeable Seton ministries, helped with this task. We basically verified contact information for the directory prior to the photo session. Chairman Ed Wall wants to thank brothers Jimmy Dominguez, Ken Friday, Danny Nutt, Bob Brennan, Don Heft, George Ferito, Dan Zechmeister, Brad Istas, Bob Wilson, and Jim Goode for their help with either or both of these activities. Hopefully, everyone had a chance to have their family photo taken and are now looking forward to receiving the new directory. Annual Dues & Member ID Card Have you paid your annual membership dues? If so, and you ve already received your new card remember that the card is only valid after you have signed it! Signing it before you attend your next business meeting will speed up the entry process. Also, the Council has a laminating machine you can use at the meetings to protect your card. It you haven t paid your dues, yet, you can do so online (just click https://kofcknights.org/councilsite/councilnews.asp?cno=7850 and then click Buy Now in the pay dues section) or you can email Financial Secretary Art Victorine at ArtVictorine@gmail.com or call 972-491-0983. The blank report form was sent out with the annual dues request and is due back to Financial Secretary Art Victorine (ArtVictorine@gmail.com or call 972-491-0983) by mid-january (1/15/2016). This information is used by Supreme to produce the report of hours and dollars expended during the past calendar year. So, take a look at your volunteer support for the period 1/1/2015 12/31/2015, fill out the form on the following page, and return the information to Art Victorine ASAP! For you accountants out there, this information also helps justify K of C as a non-profit organization. It is important to all of us. Council 7850 www.kofc7850.org Page 6
