Gymdogs Post Best Score of Season With four Gymdogs out due to injury or illness, including a late scratch to all-arounder Sydney Snead, Georgia stepped up in a big way last Friday in taking down No. 11 Mizzou, 197.075-196.075. Freshman Rachel Dickson led the way, winning three event titles and the allaround title, debuting on floor and setting five career highs as she finished with an all-around score of 39.525 in the meet. Senior Morgan Reynolds also showcased her versatility in her first all-around showing, finishing with a 39.4 and setting a new career high with a 9.85 on bars. She got to show beam for the first time this season, and she received a warm reception from the home crowd as she showcased her moonwalk, continuing a proud Gymdog tradition. Junior Hayley Sanders and senior Beth Roberts also posted career-best scores in the meet, with Sanders leading the Gymdogs with a 9.875 on beam and Roberts adding a solid 9.85 on floor. Gigi Marino tied her best-ever score on floor with a 9.95 in the final routine of the night, pushing Georgia past the 197-point plateau. UGA vs. Kentucky Series History The Gymdogs have never lost to Kentucky in 81 all-time meetings, holding an advantage of 80-0-1. Under head coach Danna Durante, Georgia is 7-0-1 and has won seven-consecutive meets against the Wildcats. The meet is the final of a four-meet homestand for Georgia prior to hitting the road for three-straight weeks. Redout for a Reason The Gymdogs are encouraging all fans to wear red to Stegeman Coliseum on Friday as part of National Wear Red Day to raise awareness for women s heart health. Heart disease and stroke cause one in three deaths for women in the United States, and they are responsible for approximately one death every 80 seconds for women in the US. Dickson Does It All Rachel Dickson became the first freshman Gymdog to compete all-around since current undergraduate coach Brittany Rogers showcased her skills in 2013. It was a historic night for the Canton, Michigan native, as she set new career highs in all four events and in the all-around while winning three event titles and the all-around title. Dickson had been showing great consistency leading up to the meet, hitting her career high on vault and bars of 9.85 three times in four routines over the previous two meets. Against Missouri, Dickson brought her game to another level by posting a 9.9 on vault, 9.925 on bars, 9.75 on beam, and 9.95 on floor for an all-around score of 39.525, the best such score for Georgia this season. Gymdog Depth Is Evident Head coach Danna Durante has glowed about the team s depth from 1 to 6 in the lineup. The numbers so far this season back that up. The Gymdogs have earned 13 of 16 possible event titles (with one shared title) and all four all-around crowns over the team s four-meet win streak. Georgia won all but floor at Auburn prior to sweeping NC State for the best score in each event. The team then followed by winning titles on all but beam against Arkansas and Missouri. Over the last three meets, event titles have been won by Rachel Dickson (5), Lauren Johnson (1), Gigi Marino (2), Rachel Schick (3), Sydney Snead (7) and Sabrina Vega (1). A year ago, seven Gymdogs won event titles throughout the entire season. Super Syd It didn t take long for Sydney Snead to make an impact in collegiate gymnastics, as she won an event title on bars in her first-ever meet as a Gymdog (at Michigan, Jan. 9, 2016). The sophomore leads this year s team with seven event titles in the early running. She has three on vault, one on bars and three for the all-around. The Raleigh, N.C. native also claims the team s highest score this season on vault (9.95) and third-highest on bars (9.9) and floor (9.9). She missed Georgia s meet against Missouri as a precaution for a pre-existing back condition. Gigi On That Beat Junior Gigi Marino quietly produced great numbers on floor in 2016, posting the 10thbest season all-time at UGA in the event. Marino s total of 157.975 points was second-best on the team, trailing only All-American Mary Beth Box and her 158.2125. Marino s career numbers are equally impressive, if not more. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native has done her part to make history so far this season, averaging a 9.87 per routine on floor, including a season-high 9.95 in the Gymdogs last meet against Missouri. Sanders Gets Her Shot on Beam Junior Hayley Sanders has wanted to compete on beam since arriving on campus, and she finally got her shot last Monday against NC State. The McKinney, Texas native took a confident beam turn, performing to Lip Gloss by Lil Mama and scored a 9.775. She followed that performance with a 9.825 on beam on Friday, the second-best score for the Gymdogs in the Arkansas meet, and then led all Gymdogs with a 9.875 against Missouri. Head coach Danna Durante spoke after the NC State meet about the long journey Sanders took to crack the beam lineup, progressing during practice and remaining patient while perfecting her routine, logging long hours and countless reps in the process before having her hard work pay off. Gold Habits Spark Change After the disappointing start to 2017, senior Morgan Reynolds spoke up about the need for the team to trust itself and all of its preparation that led into the season. The Athens, Ga. native had addressed the team in the fall and spoke about the need to develop good habits of strong performance, or gold habits, as she called them. The team wore grey t-shirts with the phrase Gold Habits adorned on the front prior to their big road win at Auburn. Reynolds borrowed a quote from billionaire businessman Warren Buffet to drive her point across: Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken. Gymdogs Remain a Draw Georgia had its seventh-highest attendance for a season a year ago, averag-

ing 9,212 fans per home meet. Over the regular season, the Gymdogs brought in an average of 10,055 fans per meet, the highest number in program history. In three meets this season, Georgia has totaled 27,653 fans for an average of 9,218 per meet, good for better than 90-percent capacity of Stegeman Coliseum and fourth-best attendance mark in the nation. G.R.O.W. Returns After Off Week The Gymdogs will be holding their third edition of G.R.O.W. (Gymdogs Reshaping Our World) after the Kentucky meet. Speakers this week will include Jordyn Pedersen, Sabrina Vega, Caroline Bradford and Hayley Sanders. They will all speak on confidence and the role confidence plays in their lives. Previous G.R.O.W. events covered trust and appreciation. The post-meet programming takes place in the Suzanna Yoculan Gymnastics Center roughly 15 minutes after team scores are announced. To RSVP for the event, fans can email GROW@Sports.UGA.Edu with the child s name and grade. All who RSVP will receive a wristband upon entering Stegeman Coliseum. Freshmen Contributing Freshmen Rachel Dickson and Sabrina Vega have both found themselves consistently in the competition lineups for the Gymdogs this year. The duo has been praised by head coach Danna Durante for their focused approach to practice and for pushing everyone else on the team to step up We Meet Again and make themselves better as well. Dickson is coming off a career-best performance in which she set career highs in all four events and in the all-around in her first all-around performance as a Gymdog. She won event titles on vault (9.9), bars (9.925) and floor (9.95) in addition to the all-around title (39.525) in the win against Mizzou. Vega, who missed the Missouri meet due to illness, steps in on beam and floor, is a natural performer who has already become a fan favorite at Stegeman Coliseum. She is solid as a rock on beam, hitting all four routines so far this year and posting three consecutive scores of 9.8 or higher in the event. On floor, she claims a career-best score of 9.925, posted against NC State, which won her an event title. Jordyn Pedersen, who has yet to crack the competition lineup, has been knocking on the door of being inserted into the lineup and is perfecting her routines in practice. Cherrey Out For Season Sophomore Gymdog Gracie Cherrey will miss the 2017 season due to an ankle injury suffered in December. The Minnesota native competed on bars 13 times in 2016, including at the NC Semifinals and Super Six, posting a sason-best 9.85 as a freshman. Mo Takes the Moonwalk Senior and Athens native Morgan Reynolds assumed the responsibility of taking over the moonwalk tradition at Georgia. She is the fifth Gymdog to perform the moonwalk on the balance beam, following Nikki Childs, Cassidy McComb, Georgia went 2-0 against Kentucky in 2016, including two wins away from Stegeman Coliseum. The Gymdogs took a 196.275-195.025 decision in Lexington then again bested the Wildcats at the SEC Championships, 196.8580-196.250. Georgia vs Kentucky The Durante File Georgia head coach Danna Durante is entering her fifth year as the head coach at the University of Georgia. The Gymdogs reached the Super Six in three of her first four years, and two seniors in 2016 - Brandie Jay (vault) and Brittany Rogers (bars) - became the first national champions under Durante s direction. Over her first four years at UGA, the Gymdogs have amassed 68 wins (17 per year), five SEC Individual Titles, 20 All-SEC honors and 46 All-America Honors by 10 gymnasts. Prior to her stint at UGA, Durante was the head coach at Cal (2012), an assistant coach at Nebraska (2003-2011) and an assistant at Washington (1999-2002). She was an All-Pac 12 gymnast at Arizona State and served as a USAG Elite Level judge from 1996 to 2000. Durante s Record Year (School) Record Conf. Rain Drop, Drop Chalk Junior Vivi Babalis shows her flair for showmanship during her floor routine, opening with a Lebron James-esque chalk drop to her performance. The Montreal, Quebec native uses that to start what is undoubtedly one of the stronger routines on the team. Bulldog fans are familiar with tailback Sony Michel s touchdown celebration of jazz hands. Babalis, a friend of Michel, decided to give a nod to the football standout and incorporated the jazz hands into her floor routine. Lo Taking Flight Senior Lauren Johnson is entering this year with the possibility of it being her final year of competition for the red and black. She missed her sophomore year due to an ACL tear, so the possibility of applying for a redshirt is real. However, she has already made her plans for what she wants to do after leaving UGA. Johnson announced at the team s Pumpkin Peek in October that once she hangs up the grips she ll be joining the U.S. Air Force as a medical officer. Johnson comes from a military family, although the rest of her relatives were in the Army. Johnson says her choice came down to Air Force or Navy, with the wings taking the edge because of the opportunity to work with the medical staff. She and fellow Gymdog Hayley Sanders, whose father is a Marine Corps veteran, appeared on the SEC Network as part of the channel s Veterans Day coverage and were interviewed by Dari Nowkhah about the significance of the holiday in their lives. 2017 Schedule Tabbed Toughest The websites NC Gym News and RoadToNationals, the official website for women s collegiate gymnastics, declared that the Gymdogs have the toughest schedule of any team in the country for 2017. Using a mathematical formula based around the final 2016 standings, NC Gym News determined that Georgia s 2017 opponents had the highest average final rank of any team in the country, just shy of No. 11. The top four teams in the poll all hail from the SEC, including Georgia, Alabama, Auburn and LSU. This season, the Gymdogs open with back-to-back road meets at No. 2 LSU and No. 8 Auburn, before hosting four consecutive home meets against N.C. State, Arkansas, Missouri and Kentucky. Another tough string of meets away from Stegeman then follow, with contests at Florida, in St. Charles, Mo. against LSU, Oklahoma and Missouri, and then at defending national champion Oklahoma on Feb. 24. Georgia closes out its regular season with home meets against storied programs Alabama and Utah. Gymdogs on TV The 2016 slate of SEC Network televised gymnastics meets, including the weekly Friday Night Heights promotion, was successful enough that the network decided to further increase its coverage in 2017. The Gymdogs will be the network s main event, the Friday night, 7 p.m. broadcast, in each of the first two weeks of the season for their highly-anticipated showdowns with LSU and Auburn, two teams that the Gymdogs saw plenty in 2016. The team will be live on the SEC Network five total times in the regular season, highlighted by a rare Sunday meet against Alabama in one of collegiate gymnastics fiercest rivalries. Coaching Staff Grows The Gymdogs kept national champions Brandie Jay and Brittany Rogers close by after the end of their eligibility, serving as graduate coach and undergraduate coach, respectively. The duo were the first individual champions under head coach Danna Durante, and they were Georgia s 19th and 20th individual NC champions. They are joined as additions to the gymnastics staff by former All-American Mary Beth Box, who also was a 2016 graduate, who is serving as the team s graduate assistant.
