Bringing together over 280 athletes from across the country, this rigorous 4-day tournament will serve to showcase Canada s top players, and will serve as the avenue for selecting players for Team Canada. Winnipeg is well known as a city brimming with community support. As we plan the largest and longest National Tournament yet organized, we strive to incorporate our unique Winnipeg personality into every aspect of the tournament. We are proud of our city and welcome the opportunity to showcase everything Winnipeg has to offer as a top-tier Canadian city. We hope to pay homage to our unique city and the communities that have served as the catalyst to our sport s unprecedented rapid expansion in Manitoba. DODGEBALL: THE SPORT Dodgeball has made the leap from the school gym to the world stage. We all know the basics of the game-- throw the ball to hit and eliminate the other team, catch the ball and the thrower is out. In the past several years that simple game has evolved into a world-class competitive sport with layers of strategy, dedicated athletes, and intense action. This level of dodgeball includes position players, offensive and defensive strategies, specialty throws such as a curve balls, sinkers, sliders, and incredibly nimble acrobatic dodges. The athletes on display at the National Championship are highly competitive, and with Canada s success at the World Championships they can also be safely described as the best dodgeball players in the world. APPROXIMATELY 1000 CURRENT WEEKLY DODGEBALL PLAYERS ON 158 TEAMS IN WINNIPEG DODGEBALL IS GROWING NATIONALLY AT A RATE OF 10% PER YEAR 101 LOCAL ATHLETES TRIED OUT FOR TEAM MANITOBA AT THE RIEL CUP DODGEBALL IS DIVERSE WITH PLAYERS FROM ALL CULTURAL AND ATHLETIC BACKGROUNDS 95% OF PEOPLE HAVE PLAYED DODGEBALL BEFORE RURAL AND CITY-BASED LEAGUES CATER TO YOUTH AND ADULTS ALIKE NATIONALS: THE MAIN EVENT The 2018 National Dodgeball Championship will take place at the Duckworth Centre at the University of Winnipeg from April 13-15. The event will attract 270+ of the country s leading dodgeball players on 20 men s teams and 14 women s teams including 3 men s and 2 women s teams from Manitoba. The event will start with two days of round robin play on five courts and will be followed by playoffs on Sunday on two Courts with spectator seating. Playoffs will include quarter finals to the gold medal game for both men s and women s teams. Games will be 40 minutes each and the playoffs portion will take the whole day (10:30 AM - 8:30 PM). Gold medal games will take place at approximately 7:00 pm. This is the third annual National Dodgeball Championship; previously hosted in Toronto (2016) and Halifax (2017). The event also doubles as a tryout for Team Canada at the World Championships.
LOCAL AND NATIONAL RECOGNITION Dodgeball Manitoba (DMB) is a registered Not-For-Profit organization recognized by Dodgeball Canada and the World Dodgeball Federation. Our elected executive board comprises of 8 volunteers who strive to consistently expand the reach, impact, and prestige of this sport both within Manitoba as well as nationally and internationally. Manitoba is the second largest dodgeball province in Canada and has by far the most regular dodgeball players per capita of any area in Canada. Dodgeball Canada is a federally-incorporated non-profit organization, whose goal is to actively grow dodgeball in Canada. They represent 19 member leagues and 10,000+ active players across Canada at all levels of competition. In addition to overseeing the National Program and supporting five-time world champion Team Canada at the highest levels of competitive play, Dodgeball Canada supports numerous community organizations, as well as promoting fair play and sportsmanship at the junior high and high school levels through their Dodge in Schools program. Dodgeball Canada also supports the sport s growth globally through their Executive Seat in the World Dodgeball Federation.
