C P R O J E C T N N E C T I O N To better prepare our 4-H members for fair, a new project will be published monthly. Watch future newsletters for ideas and guidelines to get your exhibits ready for the county fair! Agronomy and Field Crops (Department G, Division 750) See page 51 of the 2016 Fairbook for full details. With harvest just around the corner, collect stalks of grain to exhibit at the 2017 fair! Corn (includes yellow, white, pop, waxy, or any other type) Ten ears or three stalks cut at ground level without roots or soil; bound together Soybeans Six stalks cut at ground level without roots or soil; bound together Oats or Wheat Sheaf of heads two inches in diameter at top; tie with stems 24 long Any other crop (alfalfa, millets, barley, rye, amaranth, dry beans, sugar beet, mung bean, canola, sorghum, safflower) Sheaf three inches in diameter at top tied with stems cut at ground level Think of the machines, techniques, and new technology utilized to produce crops; create an original display about any of the following: Production Crop scouting, alternative crops, etc. Technology Genetic engineering, crop breeding, GPS, yield maps, computers, etc. End Use Food, feed, fuel, or other products Water or Soil How soils are used for crop production, range, conservation, wildlife, wetland use; ways to protect or conserve water and soil resources Career Interview Investigate a career in agronomy Celebrate National 4-H Week at Raising Nebraska in Grand Island! Attend Science Saturday on October 8. The morning will be filled with Drone Discovery, the National 4-H Science Experiment, from 10:00 to noon. This program is free and open to the public and families. The Nebraska Mystery Foods Event will begin with an orientation at 12:30 p.m. for pre-registered teams. Youth in teams of two or four may compete, making a main dish on location. Contact the Extension Office at 402-370-4040 for more information about the Mystery Foods Event. 2016 4-H Special Edition The 4-H Special Edition is slated to be published in the Norfolk Daily News on Monday, October 3 in conjunction with National 4-H Week. Many 4-H members from local counties were involved in the writing of the articles, submitting of photographs, and selling of ads. Don t miss this issue! 2016 Make It With Wool Contest It is not too late to enter the Make It With Wool Contest! Entry forms are due on October 15. Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Horse Show September 17-18 at the Chance Ridge in Elkhorn Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Stock Show September 22-25 at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha Fall Trail Challenge Clinic Saturday, October 8, 9:00 a.m. at Maskenthine Recreation Area in Stanton County Geared toward the recreational rider and formulated for ALL equine breeds, the trail challenge is devoted to building and improving equine/rider partnerships. The ability to work as a team and navigate obstacles, which a rider may encounter on the trail, will enhance the trust horse and rider have. Developing this partnership through an educational experience will help make riding safe, fun, and more pleasurable. Obstacles are elective and assistance will be provided by AQHA Recreational Advisor, Larry O. Voecks, in a clinic format where you can participate or just observe. Registration fee of $5.00 is payable in advance or on site to Sarah. Participants are encouraged to make advance reservations as space is limited. Call Sarah by October 3 at 402-370-4040. Tractor Supply Co. and 4-H A Great Community Service Project! Paper Clover Campaign The Fall 2016 Paper Clover Fundraiser is coming October 5-16, 2016! As a Fall Community Service Project, we are asking each club to participate at our local Norfolk Tractor Supply Co. Store during the event to help increase fundraising dollars. During the semi-annual event, invite friends and family to support 4-H by donating $1 at the checkout in stores that contribute to our local 4-H Program. The sign-up times are on the weekends of October 8-9 and October 15-16. Times to fill are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for only one to two hour shifts. The store is pet friendly, so please feel free to bring your dog, cat, rabbit, etc. Contact the Extension office at 402-370-4040 to sign up. Again, we would like each club to participate! Thank you! Special Awards Requiring Nominations 4-H Clubs, Members, Leaders, and Volunteers can nominate anyone. Forms and nominations should be returned to the Extension Office by Monday, October 3. County Awards: All 4-H members 8 years or older who submit a Career Portfolio may apply for the county awards. Youth must be enrolled in the project area that year to compete. County awards are designed to allow everyone to compete; once you win a medal in one area, please apply for other project areas. Designate the project areas on the 2016 Madison County 4-H Award Form. Outstanding Junior Career Portfolio: This award is designed for youth 8 or 9 years old who are completing his / her first 4-H Career Portfolio in any project area. Selected by committee from submitted books. Intermediate Record Career Portfolio: This award is designed for youth 10 and 11 who have completed his / her Career Portfolio with at least two years in one project area. Selected by committee from submitted books. Glanzer Family Leadership Award: Clubs can nominate one youth per club. Write a brief description for the nomination. I Dare You Award: This award is granted to an outstanding 4-H member who is a sophomore, junior, or senior in high school. The committee selects the recipient from the books submitted. Orville Carlisle Rocketry Award: The recipient received the highest points on a rocket at State Fair from Madison County aerospace entries. Oswald Family Spirit of 4-H Award: Nominate an individual by writing a brief description of a current 4-H member who has the Spirit of 4-H, or one who portrays the real meaning of 4-H. Outstanding 4-H Alumni: Any former 4-H member who has shown outstanding accomplishments is eligible. Outstanding 4-H Leader: Describe what makes this person an outstanding 4-H leader. Outstanding 4-H Member: Nominate an individual by writing a brief description of a current 4-H member who has been outstanding in his / her 4-H accomplishments. Patty Nelson Making the Best Better Memorial Award: This award is to be given to a 4-H member who goes out of his / her way to Make the Best Better. He or she may have made a difference within the club or community as a role model to another 4-Her, or stepped up during the fair or year or within his / her own 4-H involvement. The Heart of 4-H: Recognizing a person s exceptional support of 4-H, this award also honors one s efforts to promote 4-H in Madison County. No Nomination Needed: Silver Bucket Award: Implemented to promote pride in the 4-H animal barns during the county fair, this award will be given for the club who has the highest herdsmanship score.
