Research@UConn The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) is responsible for overseeing the $260 million annual research enterprise across all UConn campuses including UConn Health and manages all aspects of research activities for UConn s world-class faculty. The OVPR supports both short- and long-term initiatives to grow UConn s research enterprise and robust innovation pipeline. Through a dynamic, multifaceted approach, the OVPR promotes single faculty investigator projects, large-scale interdisciplinary collaborations, partnerships with industry leaders, and high-potential, university-driven startups. Get Funded The OVPR is committed to supporting UConn faculty in their efforts to get funded. The OVPR provides financial and operational support for several internal funding opportunities, such as: Research Excellence Program (Storrs/UConn Health) Scholarship Facilitation Fund (Storrs) Faculty Travel Fund (Storrs) SPARK Technology Commercialization Fund (Storrs/UConn Health) The OVPR also provides faculty with training opportunities to increase their chances of winning external funding. Training offerings include, but are not limited to, faculty workshops, grant writing seminars focused on winning early career awards from the NSF and NIH, and subsequent seminars for new and established faculty with a focus on NSF, NIH, and USDA grant writing. The OVPR also keeps faculty connected to emerging internal and external funding opportunities. Submit Proposals & Manage Awards Sponsored Program Services (SPS) assists faculty with the administration of sponsored program activities at the University of Connecticut to reduce administrative burdens on researchers and department staff. Our goal is to help faculty win more grants and provide comprehensive pre- and post-award services, including: Budget development assistance and review Proposal review and submission Industry contract review and negotiation Guidance and consultation on grant-related questions Assistance with intercampus award applications Set up of new grant and contract awards and related budgets in UConn s accounting system Assistance with and processing of budget adjustments Final financial report preparation Proposal preparation and award management support through a shared service program (Faculty Services) to participating Schools and Colleges SPS is your central point of contact for all grant, contract, and other sponsored project agreement needs. Stay Compliant Compliance Support: Wesley Byerly, AVPR (860) 679-2230 byerly@uchc.edu Research Compliance Services (RCS) provides training and support to ensure that faculty, students, and staff remain in compliance while conducting the innovative research that makes UConn a world-class research institution. RCS works with faculty oversight committees to ensure compliance with regulations relating to research involving: Human subjects (IRB) Vertebrate animal subjects (IACUC) Recombinant DNA (IBC) Stem cells (SCRO) Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOIRC) RCS can also help faculty stay compliant with export control regulations and policies. RCS staff are always available to answer your compliance questions. In order to maintain close contact and open lines of communication with faculty, the OVPR has established several advisory councils. Working with Animals Animal Care Services is available to assist faculty at UConn and UConn Health with animal-related research questions and services, such as animal husbandry and veterinary care for research vertebrate animals. Among its primary goals, TCS aims to grow research and development activities at all UConn campuses by supporting collaborations, translational research, and entrepreneurial activities that bring economic benefit to our state and nation. TCS provides several services to help faculty at each step in the commercialization process: Secure patent protection for new technologies Help to move UConn discoveries towards the market through licensing or new company formation Facilitate partnerships with industry Help form cross-disciplinary collaborations Drive entrepreneurial activities and education at UConn Provide incubation space and mentoring services in Farmington, Storrs, and Avery Point (Farmington incubator pictured below). research.uconn.edu 9
