N. C. Central Howard Bowie State Saint Augustine s North Carolina A&T Grambling State North Carolina Central scored 13 unanswered fourth-quarter points to come back and knock off South Carolina State, 33-28, in the MEAC opener for both teams Thursday night in Durham, N.C. The back-and-forth battle of league contenders saw SCSU (1-2, 0-1 MEAC) lead 21-14 at the half and score on a 9-yard run by QB Dewann Ford (17-25-0, 233 yards 2 TDs) with just :05 seconds left in the third quarter to lead 28-20. Ford ran for a 7-yard second quarter score and threw two first-half TD passes. The Eagles began the final quarter by driving 70 yards in 14 plays and scoring on third-string quarterback Na il Ramadan s 20-yard hook-up with Jacen Murphy. The score pulled the Eagles (2-1, 1-0) within 28-26 after a failed 2-point conversion. NCCU stopped the Bulldogs on a 3-and-out and on the second play after a punt, second-string QB Chauncey Caldwell (3-10-0, 74 yards, 2 TDs, 20 carries, 91 yards), who had replaced starter Michah Zanders early in the game, hit Josh McCoy wide open down the middle for the game-winning 38-yard score with 5:24 left. SCSU got the ball two more times but did not advance out of its own territory. Howard continued its stunning turnaround under first-year head coach Mike London Saturday scoring on a 5-yard run from QB Caylin Newton with 39 seconds left to knock off Bethune- Cookman 26-24 in a key MEAC game Saturday in Washington, D. C. On the winning drive, the Bison (2-2, 1-0 MEAC) got the ball with 3:14 left after stopping B-CU (1-3, 0-1) on a questionable 4th-and-1 at the Wildcats 45-yard line. B-CU, up 24-20, could have punted after Howard had used all its timeouts. Instead, Newton (12-25-1, 157 yards) and the Bison drove for the winning score. In the drive, Newton (12-25-1, 157 yards, 1 TD), who ran for 140 yards on 22 carries, ran for six yards on 4th-and-6 from the B-CU 41 and completed a 25-yard pass to Jacquez Ezzard before running in from the 5. NC Central QB Chauncey Caldwell Howard QB Caylin Newton Bowie State (4-0) and quarterback Amir Hall continuted their offensive explosion in a 76-7 won over Shaw. Hall was 22 of 32 for 420 yards and six TD passes, his second straight 400-yard, six-td passing day. Saint Augustine s won its first game of the season in an 81-9 thrashing of Lincoln (Pa.). Falcons QB Darryl Johnson (14-22-1-0) threw six TD passes and for 292 yards in the win. Bowie State QB Amir Hall BCSP No. 1 North Carolina A&T scored on a 72-yard run by RB Marquell Cartwright on the second play from scrimmate and did not look back in downing Morgan State, 49-17 in Baltimore. WR Elijah Bell hauled in two (15, 31) of QB Lamar Raynard s three TD passes and DB Franklin McCain III returned two picks (100 & 78 yards) for scores in the rout. McCain, a redshirt freshman, had returned an interception 74 yards for the game-clinching score a week ago vs. Charlotte. Saint Augustine s QB Darryl Johnson

BCSP No. 3 Grambling State (2-1, 1-0 SWAC) played without starting QB Devante Kincade but had little trouble with Mississippi Valley State in a 38-6 win. Grambling got its first touchdown on a 30-yard interception return for a score from DB De Aumante Johnson, got 36- and 34-yard field goals from Marc Orosco and closed out the first-half scorng with a touchdown pass from Geremy Hickbottom to Quintin Guice for a 22-0 lead at the break. SQUEAKIN BY!! Arkansas-Pine Bluff Fort Valley State Virginia State Virginia Union Arkansas Pine Bluff (2-2, 1-0 SWAC W) tied its game at 27 with Jackson State on a 33-yard Jamie Gillan field goal with :15 seconds left and won it 34-27 in overtime on QB LeBar Patterson s 1-yard run. UAPB trailed 27-16 entering the fourth quarter but Patterson s 2-yard run early in the period pulled them withn 27-24. GIllan s tying field goal came at the end of a 56-yard, 11-play drive. JSU RB Jordan Johnson s 60-yard scoring run had given the Tigers (0-4, 0-1) a 17-16 halftime lead. They scored 10 unanswered third-quarter points to take the 27-16 lead. Johnson ran for 130 yards on 19 carries and QB Brent Lyles (18-29-0, 127 yards) had a 17-yard first-quarter TD run. Fort Valley State (1-2, 1-0 SIAC) got a 33-yard Juan Serna field goal in its second possession of overtime to come away with a 31-28 win over Benedict (2-2, 0-1). Both teams scored TDs and extra points in their first possessions of the extra session. Benedict trailed 21-0 at the half but answered with 21 second-half points capped by QB Dominique Harris s 4-yard run with 5:17 left to tie the game at 21. Harris scored on a 15-yard run in OT before FVSU QB Slade Jarman (22-34-1, 358 yards, 4 TDs) hit Loren Smothers on a 9-yard score to tie the game at 28. After Serna s field goal, Harris fumbled on the Tigers second play to end the game. Fort Valley State QB Slade Jarman Virginia State (3-0), tied the game at 27 on Trenton Cannon s 3-yard run with :40 seconds left and got a 17-yard scoring run from back-up QB Thomas Koufie in overtime to defeat Winston- Salem State, 33-27. The Rams (2-2) fumbled on its first play of overtime after Koufie s score. Cannon ran for 144 yards (21 carries) and also scored on an 11-yard run in the second quarter. Virginia Union QB Darius Taylor completed 24 of 45 passes for 383 yards and five TDs including a 16-yarder to Chazio McKenzie with :34 seconds left to allow the Panthers (2-2) to escape with a 47-40 win over Fayetteville State (1-3). Two VUU receivers, McKenzie (8 rec., 129 yards) and Gustavious Dames (7 rec., 157 yards) both had two scoring catches. Dames, whose TD receptions covered 57 and 44 yards, also returned a punt 62 yards to paydirt. FSU s Curtis Burston had just two receptions, 58- and 76-yard scoring receptions. OFF THE SCHNEID! Juwan Pootie Carter (28-46-0, 292 yards) threw two TD passes as Norfolk State (1-3, 1-0 MEAC) won its first game and kept Delaware State (0-4, 0-2) winless in a 17-7 Spartans win. Alabama A&M ran out to a 30-0 lead behind two TD runs from RB Jordan Bentley and two scoring passes from QB Aqeel Glass (22 of 37, 337 yards) in a 30-13 defeat of Texas Southern (0-3, 0-1).
