CELEBRATING ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE The Awards for Engineering Excellence program recognizes and celebrates members outstanding accomplishments, as it has for the past 28 years. The competition culminates in the annual Awards Gala attended by politicians, senior government officials, client groups, leaders in industry in all, more than 500 guests. Participants in the program receive valuable recogniton at the premier industry and networking event for British Columbia s consulting engineering companies. All member companies entered in the competition benefit from extensive exposure, including the Awards Road Show. This travelling exhibit highlights the engineering story of members projects at more than 15 venues throughout the province. Award winners and sponsors also benefit from an extensive media campaign that includes full colour advertisements in the Business in Vancouver, Construction Business magazine and other publications, and through the ACEC-BC website and social media campaigns. THE AWARDS LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR S AWARD FOR ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE ONE Award will be given to the submission that excels in all areas of the rated criteria, and will be chosen from amongst the six recipients of the Awards of Excellence. AWARD OF EXCELLENCE ONE Award in each category of entry. At the discretion of the panel of judges, more than one may be awarded if the number of entries in a category is more than five (5). AWARD OF MERIT At least ONE Award in each category, or up to three discretionary Awards of Merit may be made in any category. MERITORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD ONE Award will be presented annually, recognizing an individual consulting engineer for contributions to engineering, the development of the industry, and the community. Additional information about this award will be provided in a Call for Nominations distributed to ACEC-BC members. YOUNG PROFESSIONAL AWARD ONE Award will be presented annually, recognizing an individual young consulting engineer who has demonstrated excellence in consulting engineering practices, outstanding achievements in their applicable fields, and leadership in the community. Additional information about this award will be provided in a Call for Nominations distributed to ACEC-BC members. CLIENT OF THE YEAR AWARD ONE Award will be presented annually, recognizing an outstanding Client of ACEC-BC members, and promoting and encouraging best practices by Clients. Additional information about this award will be provided in a Call for Nominations distributed to ACEC-BC members. KEY DATES IN THE 2018 COMPETITION NOVEMBER 24, 2017 Deadline for Intents to Submit from ACEC-BC Members. FEBRUARY 2, 2018 11:00 am Deadline for Final Submissions, with Entry Fee of $900 + GST (Total = $945) per submission. Note: $550 of each Entry Fee is applied to the ACEC-BC Awards Road Show all entries are displayed through the year at public venues across the province. CATEGORIES OF ENTRY 1 BUILDINGS... includes all engineering related to buildings such as electrical, mechanical, structural, foundations and related systems engineering including systems to control heating, lighting, and energy management. 2 MUNICIPAL & CIVIL INFRASTRUCTURE... includes all engineering related to water supply, wastewater, drainage, solid waste, municipal and systems engineering related to municipal infrastructure, but excludes transportation related projects. 3 TRANSPORTATION & BRIDGES... includes all engineering related to transportation projects including roads, rail, bridges, tunnels, airports, transit systems, ports and marine engineering. 4 ENERGY & INDUSTRY... includes all engineering related to mining, metallurgy, petrochemical, geology, geophysics, forestry, agriculture, fisheries, power and transmission, industrial and related systems engineering. 5 NATURAL RESOURCE & HABITAT... includes all engineering related to the protection or enhancement of natural resources and habitat. 6 SOFT ENGINEERING... includes all engineering for non-construction projects such as training projects, computer software, research and development, geomatics, pilot projects, development of instrumentation, and studies and reports. NEW for 2018 7 PROJECTS UNDER $2.5 MILLION... includes any built project with a total construction cost of $2.5 million or less. At the entrant s discretion, a project under $2.5 million may be entered in this category, OR in one of the categories 1 through 5. If there are any doubts or uncertainties as to which category a project should be entered in, please consult with the ACEC-BC Secretariat prior to submission. At their discretion, the judging panel may move a project to a category other than the category in which it was initially entered. 3

RULES OF ENTRY 1 Only members in good standing of ACEC-BC are eligible for entry into the Awards Competition. Joint submissions involving non-acec-bc members are acceptable ONLY if an ACEC-BC member performed more than 50% of the engineering work (for the submitted component) and if the project is submitted in their name. 2 ACEC-BC Members may submit a maximum of four entries, including joint submissions and no more than two shall be in any one category. 3 Participants shall credit other consultants and contractors in their submissions and on their Exhibit Panel. 4 The Design and Construction element of the project submitted (or, the assignment for which the applicant is seeking an award) shall have been largely completed during the 15-month period PRIOR to the date of submission (February 2, 2018). Client confirmation of this and approval to submit shall accompany the submission. 5 The projects submitted for the competition shall have been managed and largely engineered in a BC office of the member. 6 Each entry shall be in one of the categories defined in the Categories of Entry. ACEC-BC reserves the final right to determine the category of entry for each project. 7 Entries shall conform to the Awards Competition Submissions - The Specifications in this Guide. 8 No additions or modifications to the entry are allowed after delivery to ACEC-BC. 9 Projects submitted in Category 7 shall provide verification in the Owner s Letter that the total project construction costs are, or are expected to be $2.5 million or less. OTHER NOTES 1 All judging results and their publicity shall be held in strict secrecy until the Awards Gala. 2 Participants are strongly encouraged to also submit their entries to the national Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards. Please note that the criteria and and submission requirements for the Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards competitition will differ from those outlined in this Guide. 3 ACEC-BC will retain and display submissions for a period of ONE YEAR as part of the ACEC-BC Awards Road Show, and possibly for other public relations purposes. 4

AWARDS COMPETITION SUBMISSIONS THE SPECIFICATIONS Each submission shall consist of TWO SEPARATE items: an Exhibition Panel and a Project Binder. It is important that you adhere to the specifications as indicated below. EXHIBITION PANEL The engineering component of the project submitted must be clearly identified on the panel. Someone unfamiliar with the project should be able to understand the essential nature of the project through text, graphics, and photographic information. The title of the project should be understandable by non-engineers. The panel must include protective trim around the edges. This will minimize damage during transport for the ACEC-BC Awards Gala and for the Awards Road Show. PANEL DIMENSIONS 100 cm (width) x 75 cm (height), or 39.4 x 29.5, in horizontal (landscape) format. Single thickness of 5mm (3/16 ) foam core. Raised text, graphic or photo blocks should be NO MORE than two 5mm foam core thicknesses (for a total of 10mm) from the main panel surface. Print size of text and labels areas to be no less than 5mm vertically (or approx. 24 point size) The ACEC-BC Logo must appear on the panel, with dimensions 3.6 cm high by 13.1 cm wide. To obtain a copy of the logo, please contact Brian McAskill at the ACEC-BC offices, brian@acec-bc.ca, tel: (604) 687-2811. The name of the Members submitting should be at least 3 cm vertically. If the logo is placed in a white box against a dark background, the minimum size of of the box is 14.1 cm wide by 4.6 cm high. This provides a minimum of 5 mm clearance around the logo. The name of the CLIENT, other members and non-members involved in the entered project/ design process, should be at least 5 mm vertically. If you are submitting a project for which you were not the Prime Consultant, the Prime Consultant should be identified on the panel. 5

BINDER SPECIFICATIONS Each submission shall include a project binder organized as follows: The binder shall be no more than one inch thick, loose leaf, 8.5 x 11 in size, with the submitter s name and project clearly identified on the outside cover and spine. The binder shall contain no more than 12 single sided pages (or 13 single sided pages when a Prime/Main Consultant s Letter is required), of 8.5 x 11 size as follows: a) TITLE PAGE Based on the sample Project Title / Data Page (see page 9). The information indicated in the sample page should appear here, though the formatting may be changed to remain consistent with the rest of the binder contents. b) TAB I i) Owner s Letter A one page letter from the owner of the project giving permission to enter the project into the competition and certifying that the design and construction (or the assignment) was largely completed within the 15 month period prior to the date of submission of your entry (February 2, 2018). For projects entered in Category 7 Projects Under $2.5 Million, the Owner s Letter will also verify that the total cost of construction is less than, or is expected to be less than $2.5 million. ii) Prime/Main Consultant s Letter A one page letter from the prime or main consultant on the project, giving permission to enter the project into the competition and verifying the role played by the submitting firm (not required if either the owner or the submitting firm is the prime/main consultant). iii) Executive Summary One page providing a snapshot of the project in no more than 250 words clearly specifying the role of the submitter(s) in the overall project, what was expected, and what was achieved, written in clear language. (Note: the CD/DVD submitted in Tab III must include a 65 word short summary, for the video voice-over.) A copy of the summary on diskette or CD shall be provided with the submission. c) TAB II Shall consist of a maximum of four (4) pages (8 x11 inch), 12 pt font, covering: i) Project objectives, solutions and achievements. ii) Technical excellence and innovation. iii) Environmental, economic, and social sustainability and aesthetic aspects. Please note that the writing in this section should be clear, concise and clearly indicate the role of the submitter in the overall project. d) TAB III i) One page of sketches/drawings which may be presented in a 11 x 17 folded size. ii) A maximum of four pages of no more than eight (8) 4 x 6 photos showing key aspects of the submission, one photo of which may be used for publicity purposes. iii) One pouch containing a CD/DVD/USB drive (or other electronic media) with copies of: 1) Executive Summary (MS Word preferred, 250 words or less); 2) a 65 word summary for the gala video voice-over; 3) all images (1800 x 1200 pixels minimum); 4) contents of Tab II (.pdf preferred); and 5) a good quality image (at least 1800 pixels wide) of the Exhibition Panel. 6

JUDGING CRITERIA This section is a guide to the kinds of things that the judges will be looking for, but is not a definitive list. There are four components to the judging process, as follows: 1 CONFORMANCE TO RULES AND PRESENTATION Attention will be given to adherence to the panel and binder specifications. 2 PROJECT OBJECTIVES, SOLUTIONS AND ACHIEVEMENTS What were the client s objectives for the project? What solutions were applied to meeting the objectives? How does the project relate to the community? Did the consultant meet the approved budget and schedule? What were the outstanding engineering achievements? What is the relative level of complexity of the project? Were there site problems, scheduling difficulties, or other elements to be overcome? What role did project management play in successfully completing the project? 3 TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION Does the design represent a new or advanced approach? Was there a unique combination of materials and/or equipment? How well did the company use its internal resources, experience and expertise? 4 ENVIRONMENTAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY, AND AESTHETICS Did the project have any beneficial effects? Does it promote sustainability? Does it illustrate the engineer s expanding role in society? 7
