ANNUAL REPORT UFMG SEG STUDENT CHAPTER BRAZIL Members 2016/2017: Ariela Diniz Bruno Cavalcanti Cristiana Leite Flávia Lima Gabriella Piffer Maria Isabel Pereira Maria Vitória Matta Raísa Vilela Rhaiana Brandão Rodrigo Diniz Sylvio Dutra Vanessa Andrade Victor Leal Vinícius Duarte SEPTEMBER OF 2017

This report has a short description of the activities that UFMG SEG Student Chapter accomplished from October 2016 to September 2017. In August of 2016, our chapter arranged a field trip in the Mineral Province Quadrilátero Ferrífero (I Expedition to Quadrilátero Ferrífero), which took two days and was opened to students non-members of SEG. The main purpose of this expedition was to expand the interest of the students in Economic Geology and to captivate new Geo-students from the University to join our chapter. Fortunately, it worked pretty well and we had an accession of twelve students, three times more than the normal adhesions we have had during last years. Thereupon, our last year was special with many activities and events inside our chapter and in partnership with others brazilians chapters. First of all, we have changed our logo. From now on, UFMG SEG Student Chapter will carry this arm stamped right above this report. The last logo had the red triangle, which means the symbol of our State in Brasil (Minas Gerais). On the new one, we replaced the triangle with the brand of the contour of The Mineral Province Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF), one of our most important calling card, where our University is located. In November of 2016, our chapter received UNESP SEG Student Chapter. They had planned a field trip to QF and made contact with us for some suggestions and help with logistics. Kindly, the UNESP s invited us to join their technical visits through some actives of Mining Companies (Anglogold Ashanti, Magnesita, Vallourec, Vale and CSN). Moreover, they invited us to participate in a lecture and in a field trip in QF given by Maximiliano Martins, Professor at Federal University of Ouro Preto. As contribution, the UFMG s made with than a one-day field trip through some key points of the QF Mineral Province (II Expedition to Quadrilatero Ferrifero) and organized three lectures given by UFMG s teachers (Lydia Lobato, Rosaline Figueiredo and C. A. Rosiere). Picture 1. Technical visits with UNESP SEG Student Chapter. In A, Magnesita stbterrains mine and in B, Vallourec iron mine.

Field trip in Quadrilátero Ferrífero organized by UFMG SEG Student Chapter to receive UNESP SEG Student Chapter. In December of 2017, our chapter had the honor of having an excellent short course given by Professor Thiago Madeira from Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP). Thiago has a huge experience in geophysical modelling, working to Anglogold Ashanti Company, publishing lots of papers and academic reviews about Geophysics Applied to Mineral Prospection. Thiago Madeira gave us a sixteen-hour course called Reading and Interpreting Geophysical and SRTM Data to Mineral Prospecting and Mineral Research. Thiago made an interesting summary of the 6-months course that he is used to provide in UFOP and took it in a weekend vacation course. Geosoft Inc. kindly gave in licenses of Oasis Montaj Software to our Chapter during this course.

Our first activity of 2017, was another field trip on Quadrilátero Ferrífero given by Maximiliano Martins, Professor at Federal University of Ouro Preto. On this time, he field trip happened jointly with UNICAMP SEG Student Chapter. Profesor Martins brought interesting techniques of geological mapping with focus on Economic Geology. As a curiosity, Martins taught the students how to dig for gold nuts in a fertile stream. Picture 5. In March of 2017, we had a special international guest on our University. Our sponsors, Profesor Lydia Lobato and Professor Eduardo Ladeira, invited the emeritus geologist of USGS, Prof. Chuck Thorman, who provided an singular lecture called Metamorphic Mineral assemblage P-T Conditions Vs. Mapping P-T Conditions: A field/lab problem to be resolve or The Alfred Hitchcock Case of Missing Rocks. It was a unique lecture that Profesor Chuck pleasantly came to our University to meet his old friends - Prof. Lydia Lobato and Eduardo Ladeira - and us. Picture 6. A: Chuck Thorman lectures' folder. B: Lydia Lobato, Chuck Thorman, Eduardo Ladeira and members of UFMG SEG Student Chapter. In June of 2017, UFMG SEG Student Chapter put out of the paper a big project, which we had planned since the last year. The I Workshop of Economic Geology was our biggest event of the year, which received around two hundreds guests from academy and industry. Students from many Universities (UniBH, UFOP, UNESP, UNICAMP, Faculdades Kennedy...) and Industries Geologists from Anglogold Ashanti, Vale, Votorantim Metais, Jaguar Minnig and others came to our Geoscience Institute to a meeting that had as main subject the Quadrilátero Ferrífero Mineral Province. Picture 7. I Workshop of Economic Geology s folder. The I Workshop of Economic Geology had as its schedule nine lectures provided by teachers and industries professionals, who shared with us its experiences about mineral researches in QF Mineral Provinces. We have divided the lectures into thematic days (QF Iron Mineralization, QF Gold Mineralization and General Geology of QF). Besides the lectures we had two short courses: i) Geophysical Interpretation applied to Mineral Prospections, given by Thiago Madeira, Profesor from UFOP; and ii) Geostatistics applied to Mineral Modelling, given

by Diniz Tamantini, employee from Vale S/A. The Workshop also covered two field trips: i) Au-U Mineralizations of QF, guided by Maximiliano Martins, Profesor from UFOP and ii) Geological Section through Pitangui Sinclinal Fold Au, given by Marcelo de Souza Marinho, geologist from CPRM). July of 2017, Brazilian chapters, including UFMG SEG Student Chapter, were contemplated by ADIMB (Brazilian Mining Agency) with vacancies to a Field Trip to Carajás Mineral Province. The Field Trip last for seven days and was based in visiting through Vale s Iron, Gold and Copper Deposits. Three of our members joined this trip, which was an amazing opportunity to make contact with the industry, learn about the geology of Carajás and to know more about mineral exploration, ore exploiting and ore processing. Moreover, it was an amazing opportunity to meet people from other chapters besides the geological classes. Picture 11. Members of UFMG SEG Student Chapter together with Brazilin Chapters's members, Vale's employees and organizers of the field trip in Carajás. The picture was taken at S11D mine, the biggest iron mine of the world. Picture 12. Members of UFMG SEG Student Chapter at Salobo mine, the biggest Brazilian cooper mine.

As a consequence of the I Workshop of Economic Geology, Datamine, one of the companies that supported UFMG SEG Student Chapter at the event, offered to ten members of UFMG SEG Student Chapter an forty hours course of Studio RM, one of its geological modelling software s. Datamine is a world-leading provider of mining software technology and services that are required to plan, manage and optimize mining operations. Picture 13. Datamine Studio RM course. On April, 2017, UFMG SEG Student Chapter applied for fund to Stewart R. Wallace Fund with the purpose of doing the I Workshop of Economic Geology. Fortunatelly, our request was accepted and we received an amount of US$500. All this fund came after all our mobilization/organization to build the event and, in fact, we got supports from Industries Companies after We ve done a hard work to search for people/companies interested to help our event. Fortunatelly, Anglogold Ashanti kindly support us. Actually, we had used the Stewart R. Wallace Fund to make feasible the III Expedition to Quadrilátero Ferrífero (Figure 14), which happened in 9 th and 10 th of September, dedicated to introduce the Society of Economic Geologists to new geology students and to captivate new members for our chapters. Fortunatelly, we had captivate big part of expedition s participants, some of them became part of our new committee.
