OHIO HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION MINUTES of FALL MEETING OCTOBER 19, 2009 OHSAA ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION BOARD ROOM 1. Welcome - President Wally Vickers welcomed everyone. 2. Opening Prayer Bob Von Kaenel led us in prayer. 3. Roll Call - Bob Von Kaenel read roll call. Those absent were as follows: Dean Clark, Dave Schlabach, Dave Butcher, Dave Krauss, Rich Venuto 4. Minutes - Bob Von Kaenel Minutes for Sept. 27, 2009 were accepted. 1 st Walsh 2 nd Shoemaker. 5. Treasurer s Report - Wayne Wiseman was accepted. 1 st Murphy 2 nd Stiverson. 6. Wayne Wiseman gave Election Results. Secretary Bob Von Kaenel was elected 1 st - Dunlevy 2 nd Schwieterman to accept election results 7. Membership Report Wayne Wiseman. As of 10/12/08 we have 2,018 members for 2010. Deadline to be a member is 12/31/09. Our goal is to have 4,200 members in 2009. 8. Executive Board Meeting with Dr. Dan Ross and Jerry Snodgrass - President Wally Vickers : A) OHSBCA Awards Presentations Discussion was held about presenting Century Awards, Arnzen Awards, and the Paul Walker Award at the State Tournaments B) State Tournament Room Discussion was held about getting a room at the Schottenstein for the OHSBCA, and for parking issues for the OHSBCA. C) Games Sanctioned Jerry Snodgrass said the OHSAA will sanction our events again this year. They will include all events we endorse. D) Coaching Class We discussed the deadline. It was established as Jan. 1, 2010. E) Rawlings Contract We noted that we are in the final year of this contract, and wanted to begin plans to meet with Rawlings, and to let the OHSAA know we are very happy with Rawlings. F) Proposals We discussed the 22-game proposal and the individual workout proposal in-depth and were told nothing was finalized Jerry Snodgrass, OHSAA Asst. Commissioner spoke with the group, and gave us information about several of these issues we discussed. He also talked about a Girls State Tournament Seating Plan, and apologized for the late notice in canceling the Rules Meetings for Basketball

9. District Director Reports It should be noted that ALL Districts and the Girls Advisory Committee are IN FAVOR of our on-going proposals. 10. District 1 Dan Gorski (Boardman) Should have website up in the near future. District 2 Sean O Toole (St. Ignatius) Had some ball complaints about the Rawlings Ball. Questions about Tournament Seeding Procedures District 3 Bob Walsh (Elyria) Problems with the Rawlings Ball, and stated their website should be completed by December 1st District 4 Tom McBride (Lake) Tournament Seeding concerns District 5 Joe Dunlevy (Indian Creek) Currently working on getting the website started. District 6 Tim Birie (Galion) Questions about the Coaching Fundamentals Classes District 7 Denny Shoemaker (Northview) Still concerned about the summer dead period; in favor of individual workout proposals, would like to see 100% of coaches seating in the lower levels for the state tournaments District 8 Mike Kanney (Celina) Had questions about the deadlines for the coaching fundamentals classes Would like to having the seeding process uniform and have Super Sectionals throughout the state District 9 Kris Spriggs (Kenton Ridge) Their website is completed. District 10 Tony Bisutti (Dublin Scioto) Their website has been updated District 11 Pete Liptrap (Pickerington North) Their website should be ready November first, and they wanted clarification about the coaching class deadline District 12 Dan Schwieterman (Shenandoah) Had some concerns about the Rawlings Ball, some coaches in favor of lengthening the halftime to 12-15 minutes. Their website should be ready Dec. 1 District 13 Norm Persin (Oak Hill) Their website is completed and should be linked to the OHSBCA in the near future District 14 Doug Stiverson (Logan Elm) None District 15 Pat Murphy (Lebanon) In favor of Super Sectionals statewide, and would like to have an officials directory for coaches.

District 16 Joe Cambron (Milford) They would like a DVD/Film Exchange at the Regional Tournament level. They believe you should exchange your last 4 games. Their website is in the beginning stages. Girls Advisory Report G.A.C. Board Would like to have each district appoint an alternate director who would be a girls coach if represented by a boys coach, and vice versa if they are represented by a girls coach. They are in favor of the on-going proposals. They are still in favor of each district having a Boys Director and a Girls Director. 10. REVIEW OF ITEMS and UPDATES Wally Vickers A. Future Dates of Clinic, Top 100, HOF Banquet A list of dates were presented for 2010-2015 for each year for these events. Dates were read and approved for the future. B. Foundation Game The deadline has been extended to Oct. 31 st. Pat Murphy explained that he had a template we could get online from him. C. Clinic It was announced that the clinic would be in the corresponding weekend, and head quarters will be at the Crowne Plaza Hotel near the Convention Center. D. Asst. COY Clarification Each district should be nominating (1) Boys Asst. Coach and (1) Girls Asst. Coach from their respective districts. Boy s nominees should be sent to Bob Von Kaenel, and Girls nominees to Mary Jo Huismann. E. State Tournament Rooms The deadline to order rooms will be Nov. 13, 2009. Larry Wilson stated that you could have a 3-night or 4-night option on the rooms. Cost would be $129.00 per night at Holiday Inn Express. F. 600, 700, and 800 Century Awards It was decided that a 600 game winner would receive state tournament tickets for 3 years, and an award would be presented at the State Tournament. Winners in the 700 and 800 category would be presented an award at the State Tournament when each milestone is achieved. Tickets for eligible winners will be seated in a special section. There will be a list developed for which state tournament (Boys/Girls) winners would be presented, and seats would be awarded. 11. North-South Game Report Wally Vickers, Tom Rettig a. Date April 18, 2010 b. Site Capital University c. Times Div. III/IV Girls 12:00 Div. I/II Girls 1:30 Div. III/IV Boys 3:30 Div. I/II Boys 5:00 d. Concerns Get information ASAP to game directors. If a coach from your district cannot accept this honor, please let directors know ASAP. 12. PROPOSALS for OHSAA In Favor of continuing to pursue 22 games and Individual Workouts. President Vickers also encouraged coaches to support the Foundation Game. 13. Ohio-Kentucky Game Report Norm Persin A. Date April 10, 2010 Girls Game 5:00pm Boys Game 7:00pm B. Site Thomas More College C. Player nominees to Norm Persin by January 1, 2010.

14. State Board Meeting Assignments President Vickers He handed out committee assignments and board of control assignments. 15. Hall Of Fame Report Don Henderson, Paul Wayne a. Class of 2010 Jim Lower (Northwest), Tom Eibel (Wellington), Jack Greathouse (Lancaster) Honorary Bob Hart (Columbus East) 1 st Birie 2 nd Walsh to accept the nominees. Passed 16-0. 16. Hall Of Fame Banquet Report Don Henderson a. Date April 18,2009 b. Site Airport Marriott c. Time 5:30 Social Hour 6:30 Dinner d. Cost - $30.00 per ticket Past inductees will get one complimentary ticket. The presenter for each inductee will be the OHSBCA President. 17. Paul Walker Award Bob Von Kaenel - The 2010 winner is Paul Wayne (Holgate) 1 st - Gorski 2 nd Shoemaker. Passed 16-0. 18. OHSBCA Clinic Review Dave Froelich It was reported that the clinic was a huge success with our attendance being its largest ever. Complaints were heard about the sound system, and other improvements were offered. It was suggested that Tom Souder be appointed as an assistant to Dave Krauss. 19. Hall of Fame Museum Update Don Henderson/Doc Daugherty- They reported that things are progressing, and they encouraged everyone to continue to push for more people to join as members. They said their banquet will be May 22, 2010 at the Columbus Convention Center. There is a possibility of the Quicken Loans Arena giving them a display area in their building. 20. Hooplines & Website Report LarryWilson/ Pat Carroll 1) Pat Carroll reported on the success of Fast Draw 2) Larry gave a report about where membership comes from in the OHSBCA 3) Larry continued to ask directors to have information sent to him for Hoooplines in regards to awards and accomplishments 4) Larry presented an updated OHSBCA Directory to everyone 5) Stationary needs must be submitted to Larry prior to Nov. 1, 2009. 6) Discussion was held about the Distinguished Service Award How many districts are doing this? Should we change to a Distinguished Hall Honor? 7) Discussion was held on whether to continue to send Hooplines editions to the OHSAA Offices, Board of Control, and all District Board Members. It was agreed to continue sending them. 8) The Ohio Army National Guard would like to present awards for Individual All-Ohio Teams, along with other awards they are already giving. 9) Larry has meeting scheduled with Gatorade, American Dairy Association, State Farm Insurance, and Holiday Inn Express. He will report on these meetings at the Winter Meetings. 10) Larry also met with new Directors and GAC Members to explain responsibilities and deadlines. 22. TOP 100 Showcase Pat Carroll Pat reported that the structure and process will remain the same. Each district should select 6 players for the Showcase. a. Date April 17, 2010.

Joe will contact winners and the game announcer to get communication for the presentation. Girls coaching winners will be presented at the Girls State Tournament. 27. Business Items Wally Vickers A. OHSBCA membership deadline December 31, 2009. Wayne Wiseman will send directors an updated list prior to the deadline. Directors will send reminders to member schools. B. Board of Control Meetings Please be sure to attend when you are scheduled. We need representation at every meeting. C. Hooplines Deadlines Deadline is March 1, 2010 all awards as listed in Hooplines D - Transfer Requests - Minerva HS requested to be moved from D-4 to D-5, and Riverdale HS requested to be moved from D-8 to D-6. 1 st - Kenney, 2 nd Dun levy to approve these transfers. Motion passed 16-0. 21. Important Future Dates a. OHSBCA Membership Deadline December 31, 2009 b. OHSBCA Scholarship due to Joe Balogh by March 1, 2010. c.
