Against the backdrop of an expansive and beautiful campus approximately an hour from Paris, and built on the foundations of an unrivalled heritage, École des Roches is now entering a period of ambitious growth and development not only in terms of its curricular and pastoral provision but also in terms of its physical facilities for teaching and learning and for boarding with a multi-million euros investment programme. Underpinning everything that we do is the aim that each pupil not only gets fulfilment and enjoyment from their school years but leaves the school with an understanding and value of self and with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed at university and in the wider world. That success depends not only on high academic and extra-curricular achievement but also on having acquired the necessary human skills and values that will enable them to operate in a global society. The responsibility for nurturing the development and wellbeing of each individual pupil in this way extends beyond the classroom and our shared ambitions for the education of your child can only be fully realised through working effectively in a spirit of partnership between home and school. As such we welcome and encourage regular contact with you as parents. I invite you to visit École des Roches, to meet its staff and pupils, and to learn more of what this unique school has to offer and its ambitious plans for the future. David Dowdles Director General 3

Since the establishment of the School by Edmond Demolins in 1899, Ecole des Roches has had as one of its key principles the wish to develop and recognize the full range of its pupils diverse talents. It is in this spirit that the School has created a system of merit-based scholarships designed to recognize the particular talents of young candidates, whether these talents be reflected in the classroom, on the sports field, in a concert hall or on the stage, and without reference to their family s financial means. Applicants are assessed in particular on their potential to contribute to the School s academic, sporting and artistic life and, more broadly, to its national and international reputation. A series of tests, interviews and written assessments will take place at the school in Verneuil, except in exceptional circumstances and by agreement with the School. Beyond the wider selection criteria that each scholarship candidate will be required to fulfil, it is expected that every scholarship holder will embody the values of the School in all aspects of his/her life. In general, scholarships are awarded on a merit basis to candidates displaying the best balance between academic excellence and sporting or artistic talent. This scholarship programme is open predominantly, but not exclusively, to French-speaking Middle School and Sixth-Form pupils wishing to join the School from the start of the next academic year. Multiple scholarship awards cannot be made at the same time to individual candidates. An award implies a percentage reduction in fees (both for tuition and boarding) variable according to both the type of scholarship and the level of excellence exhibited by the candidate and ranging from 10 to 75% of fees (or more in exceptional cases). A personal letter of engagement will be signed by each recipient of an award. All scholarships are reviewed annually and should continue from year to year on the basis that the recipient satisfies all necessary requirements including demonstrating continued commitment and progress in all areas of activity. In tandem with scholarships awarded to Middle School and Sixth-Form pupils the School also offers a range of awards at primary level. For further information on these awards please contact the Admissions Department. Candidates currently studying at the School and whose families may be facing financial difficulties are entitled to apply for a bursary. Academic Scholarships Academic Scholarships are intended for those pupils demonstrating outstanding academic credentials and potential across the range of academic disciplines. Candidates must submit a letter of application along with their last two years report cards. They will be required to take a series of evaluations comprising a panel interview and written exam papers. The list of subjects to be assessed and the length of each assessment will be communicated to candidates in accordance with their intended year of entry. For pupils applying for scholarships in languages an additional oral assessment will be required. 6

International Baccalaureate Scholarships Ecole des Roche is amongst those international schools offering students in their final two academic years the option of studying the IB Diploma. In order to further promote the programme, the School is offering a number of scholarships to pupils interested in following the Diploma and whose academic profile is in harmony with the autonomy and maturity demanded of those following this rigorous course of study. Those wishing to put themselves forward for an IB Scholarship should send a letter of application, including their last two years school reports and an essay of c.2000 words outlining their understanding of the Diploma Programme and detailing their reasons for selecting the programme. They should also highlight those personal strengths which will contribute to their success in the IB Diploma Programme and their intended future course of study at university. Eligible applicants will be interviewed by a panel comprising teachers and other staff involved in the delivery of the IB. Candidates will also be required to take written examinations, details of which will be given at a later date. Candidates are strongly encouraged to furnish examples of personal work which might afford the interview panel a better idea of their suitability to follow the IB Diploma Programme. 7

Sports Scholarships The playing of regular sport has been one of the key characteristics of Ecole des Roches since its establishment. Former pupil Jean de Beaumont (Les Pins, Les Sablons, 1916 to 1922) was a high-level sportsman in a number of different disciplines. Three times French Champion and joint World Champion in Shooting, he participated in the Olympic Games in Summer 1924. He was also a University League football player, won the Criterium de Paris 110-meters Hurdles and shone in this discipline by participating in the World Student Championships in 1923. He went on to devote many years to working with olympic sportsmen and women in his capacity as President of the French Olympic Committee from 1967 to 1971 and Vice-President of the International Olympic Committee from 1970 to 1974. Amongst other things, Jean de Beaumont financed the construction of the Ecole des Roches swimming pool. To honour his memory, the School has decided to establish a system of scholarships for student who excel in one or number of different sports and who exemplify the olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect. Candidates for a Sports Scholarship must submit a full application including school reports for the last two years and a letter of application outlining their sporting ability and achievements, including at competition level. Each eligible candidate will be assessed by the Director of Sports and required to undertake a practical evaluation at the School. 8

Music Scholarships For some years now in the month of August Ecole des Roches has welcomed between 150 and 300 young people between the ages of 7 and 17 who, under the artistic direction of Petites Mains Symphoniques, meet to rehearse before putting on a series of concerts in the towns, villages and historical sites around Verneuil-d Avre-et-d Iton. Based on this experience, Ecole des Roches is now offering gifted young musicians the opportunity to apply for a Les Roches Symphoniques Scholarship. The aim of this programme, beyond the recognition of individual instrumental or vocal skills, is to emphasize the value of collective music playing as part of an orchestra or choir made up of equally talented musicians. Candidates for a «Les Roches Symphoniques» Scholarship will be selected according to their musical ability as well as their academic ability. Candidates should enclose with their application a video recording of up to 5 minutes in length of a piece of music of their choosing (instrumental or choral), their school reports for the last two years and a letter outlining their reasons for applying. Auditions will be organized either in Paris or at the School between January and April 2018. At these auditions, eligible candidates will be required to perform a 5-minute piece of music different in style to the recording already submitted. Auditions will be held in front of a panel comprising music staff from the School alongside other professional musicians from outside. 9

Visual and Creative Arts Scholarships «L art est le plus court chemin de l homme à l homme.» Art is the shortest route from man to man André Malraux. This humanist perspective occupies a key place at the heart of teaching at Ecole des Roches. With the aim of rewarding students whose imagination, creative and artistic talents shine, Ecole des Roches is offering a range of scholarship to students exhibiting particular skill in the areas of drawing, painting, sculpture, video and photography, applied arts, technology or drama. Candidates should forward to the School their reports for the last two academic years along with a portfolio of their work or a video recording of a performance and an essay of c.2000 words outlining their work as a young artist. Eligible candidates will, where appropriate, be auditioned by a panel comprising art teachers and other staff at the School. In addition, candidates will be required to undertake an assessment in an artistic discipline of their choice. 10
