Wllams was at Columbus Feb. 0th lendng the meetng cf the presdents of Jhc state-supported colleges and unverstes. He also gave tme to checkng up on the budget wth the Budget Commssoner. The progress ths year n handlng the cute budget has been unusually slow and the Executve Budget has not been prnted as yet. Ths delay s largely due to the fact that t takes tme for the new offcals to get the work under way. College Faculty Women's Club Gve Recepton The studo n the Practcal Arts buldng made a lovely settng for the party Frday evenng gven by the College Faculty Women's Club for the faculty men and ther wves. In the soft glow of lght from floor lamps and red candles, the offcers greeted the guests. Later n the evenng, Mrs. Margot Sanger of Toledo appeared n her "Theatre of the Imagnaton". She cleverly presented a seres of orgnal and vared mpersonatons whch was very well receved. After the program, danty refreshments, suggestve of Valentne's Day were served. Offcers of the club are: Nna Beatte, presdent; Grace Durrn, vce presdent; Vvan Craun, secretary; Helen Henderson, treasurer. Prof. Schwarz Adresses Legon Prof. Schwarz spoke February twentysecond at the Amercan Legon Washngton's Brthday Banquet held n the Legon Hall. Hs topc was "The Humanty of Lncoln''. When an unknown compound was recently presented to them, they agreed to contrbute to a sum of money whch would reward the most accurate analyst. Two analyses can be submtted by each student. Wood County Basketball Tourney Held n Gymnasum The Wood county hgh school basketball tournament was held n the Men's gym Frday and Saturday. A part of the games were played last week end wth the fnal games scheduled for the evenng of March 1. B. G. HIGH SCHOOL TO PRESENT PLAYS The H-Echo staff of the Senor Hgh School wll present three one-act plays n the Hgh School Audtorum Tuesday, March 5. The program ncludes: "The Chna Pg," "The Convct", and "Savng Dad." The plays should be capably presented as the casts have worked dlgently for the past two weeks. Mr. F. G. Skbbe, drector of the plays, s an alumnus of the Bowlng Green State College. A pre-vew of the "Chna Pg" wll be presented Monday, Feb. 5, n the Hgh School Audtorum at 1:00 o'clock. Men's Glee Club To Gve Program The Men's Glee Club wll sng n Plan Church next Sunday, March 3. The evenng's concert features wll be a group of sacred songs, secular songs, negro sprtuals, marmbaphone numbers, and numbers by a trumpet tro. After the dscusson at Emerson last Wednerdr-y nght, the need cf a Student Councl on.hs campus s qute apparent. Former students of other schools told how the body functoned there, as follows: Juanta Baley, Bluffton; Eugene Beatty, Oberln; Margaret Cosson, Indana, and Dorothy Wolfe, Toledo U., who presded. It was brought out that a few ndvduals cannot possbly secure ths reform. Students wll have to show a whole-hearted nterest before ths plan of student government can be put nto effect. Commerce Corner The last regular meetng of Qull Type was called to order on Wednesday nght, Feb. 0, n room 08 of the Practcal Arts buldng. Mss Kelly of the Bowlng Green Credt Bureau gave an enlghtenng dscusson about her work, and Mr. Asmus read a paper on bankng. THE PRESENT CRISIS Two present-day controversal ssues our natonal atttude toward the world court, and the soco-economc problem of dstrbuton were dealt wth by the Rev. Dr. E. R. Stafford n hs address before chapel last Wednesday. In a steady, Vctoranly perfect eulogy, Dr. Stafford masterfully bult the background of poltcal events upon whch George Washngton and later Abraham Lncoln played ther roles, as was seasonaly approprate. Rngng the phlosophes and capabltes of these men nto the vastly dfferent context of modern cvlzaton, Dr. Stafford defntely stated that "the very reason why Washngton so admnstered hs doctrne (that the naton should avod entanglng allances wth European Natons) now justfes our entrance nto affars of manknd." Ths reason, he stated, was selfpreservaton. Agan, n commentng upon the noble strfe for the hgher rghts of humanty, the war between the states, Dr. Stafford nterpreted Lncoln's famous, "Ths naton cannot lve half slave and half free," nto terms of men and machnery. Pursuant wth the socal dealsm of Lncoln, there s a present demand for the more effectve and socalzed dstrbuton of wealth. In commentng upon ths address, t may well be suggested that the poltcal exgences of nternatonal relatons be consdered along wth the pure economcs whch Dr. Stafford used n makng hs generalzaton about nternatonal afflaton, and wth regard to Lnclon's socal phlosophy, that we take care to consder that though Lnclon fought to preserve natonal unty, hs subsequent freedom of slaves dd not greatly affect ther socal status for the better, f at all. Rdge Street News The second grade entertaned the frst grade for a whle on Feb. 1. They made paper hats whch the frst grade decorated They read stores and gave poems about Washngton. They gave the flag salute. The frst grade told stores that they had learned about Washngton. Both grades marched through the halls, nto the thrd rnd fourth grades, wearng ther hats and carryng flags. The fourth grade s makng a study of the hstory of Oho. Stores of the Ice Age, the Ages of the Mound Bulders and Red Men are topcs whch are nterestng the pupls n wde readng. Books about Indan legends, and the lfe of prmtve people are beng selected at the lbrary and brought to school. The pupls of the sxth grade are collectng news and materal for another ssue of the Rdge Street Messenger edted by ths grade. The annual art exhbt was held at the Senor Hgh School. There were contrbutons from nearly every pupl. A sxth grade boy wrote the followng artcle concernng t: "The whole school has been puttng the fnshng touches on ts art for the Art Exhbt. The varous rooms at the Senor Hgh School were flled wth the work of the dfferent schools. Fruts, flowers, portrats, Madonnas, landscapes, all over desgns, and even pctures of the school rooms could be seen on the walls. The school art exhbt was only a small part of the general exhbts. The dfferent classes of the Senor Hgh had exhbts showng the nature of ther general work. The gymnasum was flled wth exhbts from the stores and manufacturers of Bowlng Green." And so Jm Wlson, last Wednesday nght n a lecture to an nterested group cf college students and faculty members, proceeded to shatter the popular noton about Afrca beng a jungle full of ferce anmals and savage men. By means of sldes, flms, exhbts, and a cheer-up personalty Jm Wlson presented a clear concepton of Afrcans as people. "No rac?, color, or creed has a monopoly en love, happness, and lfe." Through ntmate contact wth varous trbes by dependng upon the natves for food and help along the whole of hs cross-afrcan journey on "motor bke" he was able to observe the Afrcans as they lved. He reported that Afrcans are not shftless, but spend ther tme to some advantage n weavng clcth, workng metal ware, farmng the sol, and toolng leather. Ths was verfed by showng seme nterestng peces of handwork done by natve Afrcans. Jm Wlson ponted out much that should be learned from Afrcans by the so-called more cvlzed natons and people. He sad that contacts among the natves are on a hgher and safer level than n some natons of whte people. There s more respect among the natves than there s n ou" cwn hgh-speed, thoughtless cvlzaton. There s the language of good wll whch all natons should learn and practce nstead of dstrustng each other, havng armament races, and kllng many nnocent people n battles. The Afrcans should send mssonares to the natons of the whte race where good wll s more needed nstead of mssonares gong to Afrca. Jm Wlson observed the Afrcans to be very peaceful among themselves and also to foregners who try to be peaceful to them. Jm Wlccn, a young Indana collegan, was the frst whte man to cross Afrca on a motor-cycle. He made the tr] from Lagos, Ngera to Znder, French N; er of about 3,800 mles, averagng 8 mles a day. Shatzel Hall Notes All the grls took bag and baggage and left Shatzel Thursday afternoon for home. I sad "all the grls", but I meant all ex- cept 16 grls- Dd these 16 g r s get homesck? I should say not. These grls were uereaaded by three boys wth excellent voces. Ghost stores were told n a dark rccm and were related so well that some grls even thought ghosts had entered Shatzel. Then there were partes wth hamburgers, pop corn, etc. But best of all was the trp down town that the grls took wth the buggy returnng n pomp and glory wth Mss Mary Cole and Mss Elowyse Kay as the occupants and the other grls actng as the horses by pullng the buggy. Don't you wsh you could have teen t? I am sure the grls of Shatzel now wsh they would have stayed. The grls of Shatzel Hall were sorry to have Mss Martha Decker leave at the end of the frst semester. Everyone wshes her much success n nursng at the St. Vncent hosptal, Toledo. The program conssted of stores, songs, poems, and a dramatzaton whch grew out of the regular class room work. At the close of the program steroscopc vews of Washngton were shown by one of the teachers. A change of musc nstructors for the Tranng School was made at the begnnng of ths semester. PAGE 4 FALCONSDROP ONE Lose Heavy Scorng Game to Bears The Falcons suffered ther seventh conference loss by droppng a wld game to the Polar Bears of Oho Northern last Tuesday evenng. In the game whch found 105 ponts beng scored, the Bears collected 56 whle the Falcons garnered 49. The Bears wth the excepton of once, held the lead throughout the game. The Bears on the very frst play swept down the floor for a feld goal and followed up a short tme later wth another feld goal. Weber broke the ce for the locals by chalkng up a foul shot. The frst half found the game beng played on even terms. The lead of the Bears was never more than four ponts. As the teams left the floor at the half, Northern held a slm 3 to 0 lead, through the able playng of Faber, the pvot man, who rang up ten ponts, and Blose, who scored seven. Weber and Wallace lead the locals n scorng n the frst half, scorng 7 and 6 pont3 respectvely. The Polar Bears used a fast breakng offense whch caught the Falcons flatfooted several tmes. Shafer, Hartman, Weber, Albon and Wallace started the game for the Falcons wth Wlson, Inman and Stevenson beng substtuted. The second half found the Falcons lneup changed slghtly. Lews who has been out wth a bad ankle teamed up wth Shafer at the forward posts and ther work together was the best of any combnaton that has played forward yet. Weber was back at hs pvot post and Inman and Wallace were at the guard posts. Ths combnaton started out lke a whrlwnd and soon held a 7 to 6 lead but the Bears ralled, and at the end of the frst fve mnutes of the second half had a 3 to 9 lead. In the next fve mnutes Northern added 14 ponts to the Falcons sx to hold a 46 to 35 lead, wth 10 mnutes remanng n the game. In the next fve mnutes the Falcons outscored the Bears four to two and traled now 48 to 39. The last fve mnutes found the Falcons rallyng gamely but could not overcome the Bear lead and wth Shafer scorng a felder as the gun ended the game they went down nto defeat 56 to 49. Faber, whose fne work at the pvot poston helped Northern, and Blose the Tarzan of the team were outstandng. For Bee Gee, Shafer wth 17 ponts, and Weber wth 16 ponts paced the Falcon attack. Beth the Bears and Falcons scored feld goals but the Bears took advantage of the Falcons on foul, collectng 1 ponts at the foul lne whle the Falcons could connect for only fve. The Falcons have one more chance to break nto the wn column and that s tc nght. The Toledo U Rockets wth 11 vctores n 13 starts, nvade the Falcon nest for an Oho conference tussle tonght. The Rockets defeated Bee Gee n Toledo a whle back, 3 to 1 and ths wll be the Falcons opportunty to avenge the defeat. The Delh-Traveler game for the champonshp wll be played as a prelmnary game to the Falcon-Toledo U game. These two teams are ted for frst placa wth 1 vctores and one defeat. The Delh lost to the Travelers and the Travelers lost to the House of Watty. The Travelers defeated the Delh quntet by a narrow margn of 8 to 5 n ther prevous encounter. Ths game wll be worth seeng. The lneup for the teams wll probably be the same as they were durng the race. For the Travelers, Whtacre wll be at enter wth Wght and W. Roper at the forward posts and Kuhlman and T.
