AHEPA Mount-Royal Chapter CJ7 Newsletter January 24, 2018 Visit our website for the calendar of meetings and events: www.ahepamontreal.org Next Chapter Meeting Wedensday, January 24, 2018 Message from the Chapter President Dear brothers, I hope this bulletin finds you all well. I would like to wish you a Happy New Year. I would like to invite you to the cutting of the Vasilopita and for our first joint meeting with the Daughters of Penelope, Maids of Athena and Sons of Pericles which will be held at the Saint Michael Greek Orthodox basement located at 11801 av Elie-Blanchard on Wednesday January 24, 2018 at 6:30 pm. During the past months brother James Hutchison and Sister Maria Pilarinos and the rest of the committee have been hard at work planning the 19 th Annual Valentine s Ball which will be held on Friday February 9, 2018. The event is coming up very quickly and there are exactly three weeks left to purchase your tickets. Please show your support to Brother James and the organizing committee by attending the Ball. During the last chapter meeting held on December 18, 2017 we balloted and also initiated 5 new brothers, Peter Papamichalopoulos, John Paradias, Peter Papadogiannis, Dennis Vossos and James Kocoris. We held a traditional initiation ceremony and we had the honor of having the District Governor, Bro. Emmanuel Constas and District VP Hellism, Bro. Byron Yankou as our guests. I would like to thank Bro Emmanuel and Bro. Byron for facing the snow storm (with his rather large Monster Truck) and driving from Toronto to be with us. I would also like to thank Brother George Vassilas, District 24 Governor for also attending. I would also like to thank Bro. James Hutchison for planning and organizing the initiations ceremony, your contributions to this chapter are invaluable. On January 14, 2018, sister Georgia Tridimas, the DOP President and I were honored to attend the cutting of the Vasilopita of the Hellenic Scouts of Canada organized by Mr. Menelaos Pavlides. 6:30 p.m. Saint Michael Greek Orthodox church 11801 av Elie- Blanchard Montréal, QC H4J 1R7 AGENDA 6:30 p.m. Call to Order Correspondence Committee Reports: Valentines Ball DOP events AHEPA Events Public relations Upcoming events New Business Current Business For the Good of the Order 7:30 p.m. Adjournment of Meeting and cutting of Vasilopita On January 15, 2018, Brother James Hutchison was interviewed on Breakfast Television by Elias Makos to promote the valentines Ball. AHEPA FAMILY 19TH ANNUAL VALENTINE S BALL As you are aware this year the AHEPA Valentine s Ball is supporting the Summit School in order to assist them in the building of their Sports Complex. We believe that supporting the Summit School aligns well with the AHEPA family values as well as the scope of the Valentines Ball to help childrens causes. I would like to highlight that from the 570 active students, approximately 170 children and 40 out of the 120 teachers are of Hellenic origin. Elias Makos, Host of Breakfast Television, will be returning as our Master of Ceremony once again. I am very pleased to announce that the Supreme President Carl Hollister has confirmed his attendance as well as the DOP Grand President Sister Eva-Jean Formalont. In addition, the AHEPA Canada President, Brother Chris Argyriou will also be in attendance as well as our District 23 governor Brother Emmanuel Constas. We have reached out through social media, newspapers and TV and radio to promote our event. On January 15, 2018, I had the honor of being interviewed on Breakfast television by Elias Makos to promote the valentines Ball. Below is the link to the video http://www.btmontreal.ca/videos/19th annual ahepa montreal saint valentines ball/ I would personally like to thank all our Brothers for their continued suppport through their business sponsorships and ads and as well as their personal donations. A good measure of the success of any fundraising event is not only the amount we collectively raise but how many guests we have there in attendance. It goes without saying that we try to offer the very best and have kept the ticket price the same for the past 5 years. Our contract has a minimum that we must guarantee and as always most of our expenses are the same whether we are 200 or 400 at the Ball. You may have heard our commercial ads and interviews on the radio and TV or have seen our poster in the papers or around the GMA and on social media. We took different steps this year to promote our event in order to reach out to those outside our organization. Lastly, dear Montreal Chapter Brothers, everything will be ready for you to enjoy on Friday February 9th at Hotel Crowne Plaza s Hall, Plaza Volare on Cote-de-Liesse. All that I am asking you to do is please attend our Ball event to show your support to the organizing committee. We volunteers, on the Valentine`s committee, offer endless hours of our personal time to organize such an event that we deserve the opportunity to enjoy it with you. Tickets have purposely stayed at the same price for the past five years while we work harder to bring you more value even though costs have been increasing everywhere. Please support our Ball and chapter by blessing us with your presence. It s the only sure way to guarantee our success! BUY YOUR TICKETS NOW!! AHEPA District 23 Hellenic History Tournament Brother Byron Yankou, District 23 VP Hellenism, is helping to organize the District 23 Hellenic History Tournament. The history tournament`s purpose is to assemble high-school students from the various cities within the District 23 area to compete in a Jeopardy type of tournament where teams of three students are asked various Hellenic History trivia questions with the first, second and third place winners will be awarded cash prizes. Each AHEPA chapter within the district 23 is asked to contribute a cash donation of $500 for each team and that a minimum of two teams be sponsored. The funds will be used to fund the cash prizes to be awarded to the winners of the tournament. Each chapter will also be asked to find teams to send to the Tournament which will be held at the York University. Please see attached documents for further information. During the last chapter meeting held on December 18, 2017, our chapter agreed to contribute $1000 towards this project. In addition, we have reached out to Brother Chris Adamopoulos, General Director of Socrates and Demosthenes Schools, to ask assistance in finding two or three teams to attend the tournament. We would appreciate if the brothers know any students aged from 12 to 17 years old that may be interested in attending the tournament to please provide us with their names. In addition to the Hellenic History tournament, please refer to the additional attachment regarding the District 23 scholarships that are available. Membership dues Finally, if you have not paid your dues for 2016 and 2017, please do so at your earliest convenience, we are all volunteers and it is very time consuming on following up on collection of the dues. Your invoices for your 2018 dues will be sent shortly. 4
