(Lloyd Noble Center) TV: Sooner Sports TV Live Stats/Stream: SoonerSports.com IN THE GYM: FIVE NOTES FOR WEEK ONE 1. START WITH A BANG The third-ranked Oklahoma women s gymnastics team will open its 2014 campaign with a bang this weekend, hosting No. 8 Georgia on Friday, Jan. 10 at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman. The Sooners are 5-0 in season openers at home under head coach K.J. Kindler and will look to continue that unbeaten streak this weekend. Friday s matchup is the second in a homeand-home series over two seasons with Georgia; in 2013, OU opened the year with a huge 196.450-195.425 road win over the Gym Dogs in Athens. 2. SIGHTS SET HIGH The Sooners wrapped up a historic run in 2013 with a runner-up national finish at the NCAA Championships, tying the highest team finish in program history. With 21 of 24 routines and 12 team members returning from last season s squad, Kindler s group has its sights set even higher in 2014. OU also returns five All-American routines from last season s squad, including first-teamers Erica Brewer (UB, BB), Rebecca Clark (UB) and Madison Mooring (V). Joining the mix are Big 12 award winners Taylor Spears (Gymnast of the Year), Lauren Alexander (Specialist of the Year) and Haley Scaman (Newcomer of the Year). 3. NO BREAKS There s no better way to prepare for high-pressure situations than to perform in them, and the OU coaching staff has assembled a schedule that will undoubtedly test their seasoned team s mettle. The Sooners will face four teams that competed in the 2013 NCAA Super Six team finals, and eight teams that earned berths to the NCAA Championships last season. Oklahoma is set to challenge three of the nation s top five preseason teams (No. 1 Florida, No. 2 Alabama, No. 5 LSU) in the regular season alone. In addition, OU will welcome four top 25 teams to Norman this year in No. 5 LSU, No. 8 Georgia, No. 18 Illinois and No. 25 Arizona State. 4. ROSTER RELOADED If you think Kindler and the Sooners will need to rebuild their roster after a monumental 2013 campaign, think again. The Oklahoma roster is already reloaded following the depature of a trio of seniors, welcoming five game-changing freshmen to a team featuring four All-Americans. Freshmen Chayse Capps, Reagan Hemry, Charity Jones, Kara Lovan and McKenzie Wofford bring talent and big skills to the Sooner squad this season. Coupled with several Sooners returning from injury, OU is more than primed for what is sure to be another exciting season. 5. BRILLIANT ON BEAM OU s beam squad has flourished in seven seasons under Kindler s leadership, allowing beam to become one of the Sooners signature events. Oklahoma spent 11 consecutive weeks of the 2013 season as the nation s No. 1 team on beam. The squad s efforts culminated in an absolutely dominant 49.475 at the NCAA Super Six finals,.250 higher than any other team on the floor. Erica Brewer earned first-team All-America honors on beam at the NCAA Championships, while Taylor Spears finished the 2013 regular season ranked No. 1 nationally on the event. The Sooners return all six beam routines from their 2013 NCAA efforts and will welcome several skilled and artistic newcomers on the event as well. G Y M N A S T T O W A T C H Georgia (0-0, 0-0 SEC) BULLDOGS MAILE ANA KANEWA So. Duluth, Minn. (Duluth Denfeld H.S.) After undergoing a near-career-ending operation last season, Kanewa battled back to become one of OU s premier vaulters and captured the Big 12 title on the event. The sophomore is expected to make big contributions this season on vault and floor and could potentially contribute as an all-arounder with solid routines on bars and beam as well.

Beginning Feb. 24, the ranking is done by Regional Qualifying Score, which consists of a team s three highest road scores and the next three highest scores. The high score is subtracted from the six event totals and the remaining amount is divided by five. INSIDE THE PROGRAM: 2014 PREVIEW The 2014 Sooners include a group of ambitious, motivated and talented athletes that span all ages. Within the squad of 17, OU boasts five experienced seniors, three decorated juniors, four impactful sophomores and five stellar freshmen. The lineups on each event will have representatives from every class and every level of experience. Our team has both youth and experience, head coach K.J. Kindler remarked. The seniors have been to two Super Six team finals. They know what it takes to get to that level, and to push the team even further. Our freshmen are hard workers--positive, talented and aspiring. They are a reminder of how fast the time goes and how precious each opportunity is. Our sophomore class is all heart and our juniors have racked up accolades. VAULT The Sooners are already buzzing about the monumental boost of their vaulting corps this season. OU has been looking for muscle on vault and this season, they will boast the power as well as the depth. OU will return one vaulting All-American in Madison Mooring and a total of seven athletes who competed during the 2013 season. Sophomores Maile ana Kanewa, Keeley Kmieciak, Hunter Price and Haley Scaman, Junior Erica Brewer and seniors Mooring and Taylor Spears will prove to be a solid base to build upon. The Sooners will also welcome the contributions of freshmen Charity Jones and Chayse Capps alongside Kara Lovan and McKenzie Wofford. This squad is the big bang for our team, Kindler said. It lifts us to another level. We have always been a technical team, but now we are technical and dynamic. There will be serious altitude this season and we are ready to show it off. UNEVEN BARS OU proved to be at the top of the pack at 2013 NCAA Championship on bars, displaying tremendous consistency and diverse release sequences throughout their lineup. In 2014, OU will return a total of six athletes with competitive experience including Brewer, Clark, Spears, senior Hayden Ward, Scaman and Kmieciak. The addition of two athletes who tied for top honors at the JO National Championships will assist OU in adding depth. Freshmen Lovan and Wofford were co-champions on bars in 2013 as high school seniors and are pegged to have tremendous influence on the lineup. We took huge strides forward last season with the quality of the routines in our bar lineup, Kindler said. Our goal is to perform at this level again, while giving more athletes plenty of opportunities to gain experience. BALANCE BEAM OU will return all six competitive routines from the NCAA Championships. In addition, they have gained six outstanding newcomers on the event. Oklahoma is led by a seasoned and confident group including senior Lauren Alexander, Brewer, Clark, Kmieciak, Mooring and Spears. The returners will be joined by senior Lara Albright, Capps, Lovan, Kanewa, sophomore Haley Sorensen and Wofford in vying for time in the lineup. The fact is, this group could have a beam off every day and a different athlete could claim the title each time, Kindler said. Each day is a push toward perfection. FLOOR EXERCISE With creative choreography and clean performances still at the forefront, the Sooners have placed an increased emphasis on increasing lead-off and final tumbling passes. This season, OU will highlight five athletes in the primary lineup who will begin with E level tumbling passes and finish with D level passes. OU returns a strong group of experienced tumblers including Albright, Brewer, Kmieciak, Mooring, Scaman and Spears. Albright will be in the lead-off position for OU with undoubtedly the most consistent and energetic floor routine of the group. Newcomers Capps, Kanewa and Jones will add another level of sophistication to this line-up. Other contributors on the event will be include Lovan, Hemry, Price and Wofford.
