About the Institute: In establishing the National Institute of Building Sciences, the United States Congress created a unique organization that brings together representatives of regulatory agencies, legislators and representatives of the private sector for free and open discussion of building industry issues to seek consensus solutions to problems of mutual concern. For 37 years, the Institute has served as an interface between government and the private sector with a mission to serve the nation and the public interest by supporting advances in building science and technology to improve the built environment. As a non-profit, non-governmental organization, the Institute collaborates with representatives of government, the professions and the industry, labor and consumer interests to focus on the identification and resolution of problems and potential problems that hamper the construction of safe, affordable structures for housing, commerce and industry throughout the United States. The Institute provides an authoritative source of advice for all sectors of the economy with respect to the use of building science and technology. About the Conference: Building Innovation 2013: The National Institute of Building Sciences Conference and Expo is the first in a series of independent annual events that supports the Institute s commitment to bring together representatives of the entire building community to review advancements in science and technology and develop solutions for our built environment. Building Innovation 2013 is scheduled for January 7-11, 2013, in With the Conference theme, Improving Resiliency through High Performance, the Institute will present an informative program that highlights its activities and programs for developing innovative solutions for our industry and improving the built environment. The Institute s first independent conference in more than two decades will feature established, successful and popular events, including the buildingsmart alliance Conference, the Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council (BETEC) Symposium, the Multihazard Mitigation Council Symposium and FEDCon The Annual Market Outlook on Federal Construction, as well as various council and committee meetings and innovative technology demonstrations, such as the Construction Operations Building information exchange (COBie) and related projects. Building Innovation 2013 will present members of the building community with a great opportunity to witness the Institute s impact on the industry, interact with industry experts and innovators, gain a wealth of information through educational programs, earn continuing education units (CEUs), share their expertise and experiences, and participate in advancements toward improving resiliency through high performance. The Institute s programs during Ecobuild were well attended by hundreds of individuals representing all aspects of the building community including: architects, engineers and contractors; building product manufacturers and distributors; software producers; building owners and operators; local, state and federal agencies; codes and standard organizations; labor organizations; real estate professionals; and academia. The Institute s popular programs, such as the buidingsmart alliance Conference and FEDCon, attracted nearly 300 national and international attendees. With Building Innovation 2013 fully focused on the Institute and its programs, a significant percentage of the Institute s 900 active members are expected to attend to participate in the various council and committee meetings. 3
