Welcome to LagosPhoto Festival 2014

welcome to lagos Lagos is the most populous city in Nigeria and possibly Africa with an estimated population of 21 million people. It is also the main city in the south-western part of Nigeria. Formerly the capital city of Nigeria from 1914 to 1991, Lagos has expanded to a megacity in less than 50 years. Lagos is also Nigeria s economic focal point generating a significant portion of the country s GDP. Lagos also has one of the highest standards of living in Nigeria and in Africa. Lagos is gradually becoming a major tourist destination being one of the largest cities in Africa and in the world with the development of attractions such as the Eyo Carnival, Felabration and LagosPhoto Festival to name a few. Currently Lagos is primarily known as a business-oriented and a fast paced community. Lagos is arguably one of the most diverse cities in Nigeria with a population of people made up of different ethnicities, religions and beliefs and as a result tends to be more accommodating and tolerant of diversity than some other States in Nigeria. Lagos is the second fastest growing city in Africa and the seventh fastest in the world containing some of the most extreme urban environments in the world. The above description is not enough to depict the modern jungle that is Lagos. To know Lagos you have to be in Lagos. The city of Lagos also exposes you to the spirit and culture of a developing West African Nation.

About lagosphoto festival LagosPhoto is the first and only international photography festival in Nigeria. Founded by African Artists Founded in 2010, LagosPhoto aims to establish a community for contemporary photography that will unite local and international artists through images that encapsulate individual experiences and identities across Africa. It also aims to use the medium of photography to address social issues and capture the essence of Africa from a holistic and historical perspective. LagosPhoto Festival is part of an on-going project designed to use art intervention in public spaces. This year s edition features the works of 40 contemporary photographers in both indoor and outdoor spaces around Lagos as well as a Summer School photography workshop for budding photographers and a photographic workshop for children. LagosPhoto 2010, the maiden edition of LagosPhoto Festival titled No Judgement; Africa Under the Prism sought to address the alarming state of Afropessimism seen in international media. The aim of the festival was for Africa to tell her own stories and portray all sides of the story from a unique and non-sensationalised perspective. LagosPhoto 2011, themed What s next Africa?-The Hidden Stories, aimed at using the power of photography to represent the hidden stories on the continent as opposed to the overly represented, sensationalised images commonly exhibited locally, internationally and in popular

media. LagosPhoto 2012, Seven Days in the Life of Lagos, featured twenty-nine local and international photographers. It aimed to capture the essence of the city of Lagos, exploring what makes it unique and portraying it as the business and creative hub of Nigeria that it is. LagosPhoto 2013, The Megacity and the Non-City represented two dominant modes of photographic expression, that of the documentary tradition and the expanded realm of image-based practices incorporating conceptual and new media strategies. LagosPhoto 2014, Staging Reality, Documenting Fiction, examines contemporary photographers working in Africa that toe the line between photography and truth, incorporating conceptual practices and performative strategies that expand traditional photographic approaches and techniques.

HOW TO GET AROUND IN LAGOS One of the easiest ways to get around is by taxi. Typically, taxis cost more than buses. With the yellow taxi cabs one is expected to negotiate the price before entering and pay on arrival. Taxis can be found almost everywhere, and the new cabs have numbers on the vehicle which one may call for a pick-up. There are several cab companies servicing Lagos, using both metered and fixed fares, and they generally accept cash: EASYTAXI - 15 Wole Olateju street, Lekki Phase 1, VI 0700EASYTAXI (070032798294) http://www.easytaxi.com/ng Red Cab Taxi Service +234 700 073 3222. There are also car rental facilities available. Some of these facilities include: Hertz Car Rental - 12 Keffi Street, SW Ikoyi. 01-2703700 Novo Car Rentals - 2nd floor, UBA Building, Plot 22B, Idowu Taylor Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. 01-270 2047 For travelling short distances, you can use motorbike taxi know as an okada. These motorbikes are quick, cheap and save a lot of walking but they also can be dangerous. Safety helmets are a must at all times for both the rider and passenger. Safer and equally cheap methods are the Rickshaws. You can rent them for single use or share with other passengers, which takes longer. Just let the driver know if you prefer a single journey fare without sharing. By law, okadas are forbidden to work after dark (7pm) for safety reasons. Avoid taking an okada for long distances, while it s raining and in the night since majority of the mainland is devoid of street lights.
