2018 2019 Latinos Unidos of Iowa, Inc. Academic Scholarship Overview Latinos Unidos of Iowa, Inc. (501C3) is proud to grant scholarships for Latino students who will attend Iowa institutions of higher education. Community Service An important criteria in evaluating your application is your participation in community service. If you live in the Des Moines area or if your institution is within a 25 mile radius, you should actively participate in activities sponsored by Latinos Unidos of Iowa. If you live outside of the Des Moines area, you should become actively involved with community organizations and/or other Latino based organizations. We value community service and as such, applicants receive points for volunteering at Latinos Unidos of Iowa events. These points are added to total scholarship points to determine a potential scholarship award. For information about upcoming Latinos Unidos of Iowa events access our website at www.latinosunidosofiowa.org. Scholarship Judges The following individuals review all applications and score all applicants: Ewa Pratt, DMACC Professor Emeritus, and Latinos Unidos of Iowa, Inc. Scholarship Chair Jennifer Nostrala, Simpson College Theatre Professor Oscar Reynaga, Central College Modern Languages Associate Professor Distribution of Scholarship Funds The scholarship award is issued in your name and your intended college or university. If you are a parttime student (as defined by your school), the maximum is $500 for the academic year. If you are a fulltime student (as defined by your school), the maximum is $1000 for the academic year. The scholarship is awarded in two distributions; half is distributed for the fall 2018 semester and the remaining half will be distributed for the spring 2019 semester. The purpose of the scholarship is to help you to responsibly pay for your education. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required in order to apply. Recipients will be notified by the end of August if they are selected to receive a scholarship award. All recipients will be required to attend the award ceremony that is scheduled to be held on September 18, 2018 at Our Lady of Americas in Des Moines, Iowa. Additional details on the ceremony will be available on our website. If you are awarded a scholarship, you will receive an email from Margo Kromminga, Latinos Unidos of Iowa, College Liaison. You are responsible for ensuring that all necessary documents are submitted. Follow-up emails asking for missing documents will not be sent. All scholarship recipients will be notified by the end of August 2018.
