During this activity, you will: Access the Center for Workforce Information and Analysis s (CWIA) Real Time Labor Market Information website (previously Job Spidering) Perform job searches on CWIA s Real Time Labor Market Information web site Create a User Account needed to access additional features and to apply for jobs using the CWIA s Real Time Labor Market Information website Let s begin by pointing our browser to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry s PA WorkStats website. Type the following URL into your browser: http://www.paworkstats.state.pa.us Click on the Real Time Labor Market Information tab on the left. Remember! You can t break it. If you get lost.start over! The more you use this tool, the easier it gets to use and understand.

Page 2 Real Time Labor Market Information This site allows job seekers to review thousands of online job postings from dozens of web sites in one location. This allows you to search for jobs that are within the area that you are willing and able to travel for work. Job seekers can search for jobs using a variety of search tools: Quick Job Search Advanced Job Search Job Search by Employer Job Search by Education Job Number Search We will explore each of these tools within this activity. In nearly every search option, controls can be set to narrow the Area Type where the job will be located. You can narrow your search by City County/Parish Metropolitan Area State Workforce Region Zip Code Note: If None Selected is highlighted, you will search all jobs in Pennsylvania.

Page 3 Let s practice searching Real Time Labor Market Information Quick Job Search Quick Job Search is the default setting when you enter the site. Search by Zip Code is the default Area Type. By typing in the Zip Code where you live, you can then select the distance you are willing to travel to a job. Enter your Zip Code (Example: 17109) Click on the button next to the distance you are willing and able to travel for work (Example 25 miles) If you have your own transportation, you may be able to travel a greater distance. Depending on what public transportation is available in your area, you may want to select a smaller search radius. Enter a keyword related to the type of jobs you want to search (Example nurse aide) You will notice that the auto complete feature will provide you with job titles that are similar to the word you are typing. You can either select one of these choices (it tells you the number of jobs posted for that title), or you can simply click Search, to search for that job with the name you have selected. Click Search You will then see the number of jobs available for your job title, within 25 miles of your Zip Code.

Page 4 If this information is available, the search will return the following pieces of information: Date (of Posting) Job Title/ Description Snippet Employer Location Salary Source (State Job Board, Private Job Board, etc.) Key Match (how closely the returned result matches your key word search) The Job Posting contains the following details for the selected job: Job Information Employer Information Job Requirements Compensation and Hours Work Site Information Job Description Additional Information These results are returned based first on the best match to the search. They are then sorted so that the most recent postings will be shown. By clicking on any of the Job Titles, it will take you to the job posting. *Note You may need to scroll down to view all of the information that is available.

Page 5 Applying for a Job At the bottom of this page is a link to Apply for this job Option 1 Already Registered If you have already registered, enter your User Name and Password, and then click Sign In. But wait A prompt pops up that says, This will take you back to the posting page, and you can then click on Apply for this job. We re going to click OK and register. Registration with the CWIA website comes with a number of benefits: You can apply for jobs You can save your search parameters You can search many more job boards and available jobs The CWIA system is a little different than the Commonwealth Workforce Development System (CWDS). The CWDS only contains job orders.

Page 6 Option 2 Create a User Account If you have not registered, under Option 2 Create a User Account click on the Individual button. Option 3 Forgot User Name or Password If you have an account, but forget your user name and/or password, you can click on Retrieve User Name or Password to complete the retrieval process. After you complete the registration process, the job posting opens in a new window, and allows you the opportunity to apply for the advertised job. You must fill in each of the fields with a red asterisk (*), in order to register with the system.

Page 7 Quick Job Search (with Additional Quick Search Options) This is the easiest option to search for jobs out of the five options. At the bottom of the Quick Job Search area, click on Show Additional Quick Search Options. This allows you to search by: Occupation Group Minimum Acceptable Salary Education Level Source (type of job board) Jobs Posted Within (how recently job was posted) This search will limit your options, BUT it will be more focused in the results returned. Choose your Minimum Acceptable Salary (Example $12 hourly ($25,000 annually) or more). Choose your Education Level (Example High School Diploma or Equivalent) You can also choose to narrow by the Selected education level or less. Click on Search (Note If you want to expand your search results, you can check the boxes beside Include jobs with no salary listed and Include jobs with no education listed. The tool has no way of knowing whether or not the job meets your salary requirement this is up to you.)

Page 8 Job Search by Employer The Job Search by Employer is available by clicking on the middle tab across the top of the search area. This search feature allows you to search for jobs by employer name, by the first letter of an employer s name and by the greatest number of openings by employer. This search option will return jobs posted with the name Hershey in the employer s name. The number of posting by each company appears to the right of the company name. Search for employers by first character Click on Q This search option will return all companies that start with Q and have job postings. By selecting any of these, it will take you to the list of postings for the company selected. Search for employers by keyword Under Area Type be sure your Zip Code (17109) and search area (10 miles) are entered correctly. Enter the keyword Hershey Click Search Search for employers by job openings Clicking on Top 25 This search option will return the top 25 employers with the most job openings. Search for all employers (regardless of job openings) This option will take you to more employer search options.

Page 9 Job Search by Education This section defaults to your home Zip Code, and a 10 mile search radius you can change this by clicking on it. Then, click on Program Listing Click on W Click on Welder/Welding Technologist Leave Educational Level at Any Education Then, click Search You can search by Educational Program and/or by Education Level. Let s search for job postings that match jobs associated with a Welder/Welding Technologist Program. This search option allows either a keyword search or an alphabetical search by program listing. Under Education Program, click on Choose a program From this list, you can see where the job is located. You can also see which jobs have a salary provided, and which do not. You can also determine what type of job board the posting came from. Again, by clicking on any of the job titles, you can learn more about that posting, and apply for the job. *Note the Job Order Number. We will cover this in the next section.

Page 10 Job Number Search This is the last tab on the right across the top of the job search screen. Advanced Job Search The Advanced Job Search takes dozens of job search combinations to produce a more refined job search. Essentially, the Advanced Job Search tab combines the options from the other 4 tabs, so that several parameters can be used to filter down your search. You can get to the Advanced Job Search function by clicking on the second tab from the left at the top of the search panel. Job Number Search allows you to return to a specific job posting that you had searched before. Maybe you were searching earlier and found a specific job that was of interest to you, but you didn t have time or weren t sure you wanted to apply for it at that time. The Job Number Search allows you to go back to that specific job. To explore this, enter the Job Order Number from the last exercise. Click Search. *Note You may need to scroll down to view all of the information that is available. You should now see the same job posting as before.

Page 11 This portion of the site offers the most comprehensive filtering ability to refine your search to exactly what you re looking for. It allows you to pare down your results by: Area Selection (as before) Job Source Criteria (select all that are acceptable to you) Job Order Number(s) Job Keyword Criteria (use to eliminate jobs that have certain words) Job Occupation Criteria (job group) Employer Criteria (allows NAICS code) General Job Order Criteria
