I. Background Traditional Indigenous Territories encompass up to 22 per cent of the world s land surface and they coincide with areas that hold about 80 percent of the planet s biodiversity. GEF-Small Grants Programme has long been partner of Indigenous peoples and communities (since its established in 1992) working together on projects which foster their self-driven development and biodiversity conservation.

Direct support to indigenous peoples approx 15% of SGP portfolio out of 14,500 small grants Also approx 17% of SGP projects with women s organizations Participatory video & other innovative formats for increased access for remote populations SGP portfolio support to indigenous peoples

SGP approaches: Participatory Video Need for alternative proposal formats and tools Allow for expression in local and vernacular languages

II. GEF-SGP initiatives to enhance partnership with Indigenous Peoples a. Preferential treatment provided in the call for proposals and selection process: The UNDP Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP), invites project proposals from Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other grassroots institutions/communities. The maximum grant size is US$ 50,000.00 per project and the preference will be given to proposals submitted by indigenous peoples communities, remote and rural communities, and vulnerable groups in the GEF- SGP Focal Areas

II. GEF-SGP initiatives to enhance partnership with Indigenous Peoples b. 10 bonus points are given to project proposals submitted by indigenous peoples communities during the project selection and scoring c. Specific awareness and capacity building of indigenous peoples communities

GEF-Small Grants Programme, Bhutan work with five communities in Bhutan Finances and supports projects which foster self-driven development with respect for culture and tradition.

GEF-SGP OP-6, and Indigenous Peoples and Aichi 2020 Biodiversity Targets Focal Area Biodiversity Innovative/ Strategic Initiative Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas and Territories (ICC Context/ Compelling Rationale Support CBD Aichi Target 11 (17% global terrestrial and inland waters PA coverage by 2020 Activities Expand global South South coalition of CSOs on ICCAs to support Aichi Targets 11 (protected areas), 14 (ecosystem services) and 18 (traditional Land Degradation Bio Deposit and Climate Smart Agriculture ) Support Rio+20 outcomes, based on agenda 21, chapter 26 on indigenous peoples and communities, farmers (chapter 32) and CSO s Expand use of Bio Deposit technology in subsistence farming households to contribute towards a land degradation neutrality; expand sustainable agricultural practices that also contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation Climate Change CBR+ (Community Based REDD+) REDD cannot be successfully implemented without participation of local and indigenous communities on the ground; support for UNFCCC work program on REDD REDD+ community based carbon accounting and MRV methodology development (participatory, include non carbon benefits);

UNDP/GEF SGP Experience with CBR+ SGP has already piloted some CBR+ related projects: Much Kanan K áax REDD+ project, Mexico; Participatory carbon accounting project, Ipetí Emberá, Panama SGP has supported many projects to strengthen the tenurial rights of indigenous communities (i.e. ancestral domain claims) and has a priority for supporting work related to Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas and Territories (ICCAs)

IV. GEF-SGP OP-6 and Indigenous Peoples GEF-SGP to play the role of Grant Marker+
