GEF-Small Grants Programme Engagement with Indigenous Peoples and Contribution towards achievement of Aichi Targets

I. Background Traditional Indigenous Territories encompass up to 22 per cent of the world s land surface and they coincide with areas that hold about 80 percent of the planet s biodiversity. GEF-Small Grants Programme has long been partner of Indigenous peoples and communities (since its established in 1992) working together on projects which foster their self-driven development and biodiversity conservation.
Direct support to indigenous peoples approx 15% of SGP portfolio out of 14,500 small grants Also approx 17% of SGP projects with women s organizations Participatory video & other innovative formats for increased access for remote populations SGP portfolio support to indigenous peoples

II. GEF-SGP initiatives to enhance partnership with Indigenous Peoples a. Preferential treatment provided in the call for proposals and selection process: The UNDP Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP), invites project proposals from Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other grassroots institutions/communities. The maximum grant size is US$ 50,000.00 per project and the preference will be given to proposals submitted by indigenous peoples communities, remote and rural communities, and vulnerable groups in the GEF- SGP Focal Areas

GEF-Small Grants Programme, Bhutan work with five communities in Bhutan Finances and supports projects which foster self-driven development with respect for culture and tradition.

UNDP/GEF SGP Experience with CBR+ SGP has already piloted some CBR+ related projects: Much Kanan K áax REDD+ project, Mexico; Participatory carbon accounting project, Ipetí Emberá, Panama SGP has supported many projects to strengthen the tenurial rights of indigenous communities (i.e. ancestral domain claims) and has a priority for supporting work related to Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas and Territories (ICCAs)
