UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA BOARD OF VISITORS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY BOARD MEETING: June 7, 2018 COMMITTEE: AGENDA ITEM: ACTION REQUIRED: The University of Virginia s College at Wise III.A. Report of the Chancellor None DISCUSSION: Committee on UVA-Wise Workplan Ms. Henry will report on progress implementing the UVA-Wise Workplan. Special emphasis will be placed on enrollment and admissions forecasts for fall 2018. Ms. Henry will also provide a report on joint projects between the University and the College at Wise including a recent safety and security consultation arranged by the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. UVA-Wise Master of Arts in Teaching The College at Wise proposes initiating its first graduate degree, a Master s degree in Teaching. Graduate prepared teachers earn more, have greater potential for career advancement, produce better-educated students, and through their presence help advance the wellbeing of the region. A UVA-Wise Master s program in teaching will promote these benefits while providing teachers with an affordable graduate school option. This initiative represents a substantial change and will require approval from the State Council for Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and the Virginia Department of Education. This item will be presented as a consent agenda item in the Academic and Student Life Committee. At this time, it is not anticipated that the College s mission statement will need to be revised. The College at Wise has consulted with SCHEV and SACSCOC on this matter and will continue to seek guidance from the two bodies. The mission statement currently reads: The University of Virginia s College at Wise, a public liberal arts institution, provides students with learning experiences that offer opportunities to develop the insight, competence, sensitivity, and integrity necessary for living enriched lives and for enriching the lives of others. Established in 1954 as a college of the University of Virginia, it is guided by the values of citizenship and altruism. Proud of its Appalachian heritage, the College continues to honor its commitment of service to Southwest Virginia, the nation, and the world. The College is guided by a legacy of teaching and scholarly excellence and by a 6

dedication to quality in both the arts and sciences and professional programs. Above all, The University of Virginia s College at Wise is a diverse community of people who believe that information can be transformed into knowledge and that teaching and learning create a foundation for wisdom. South Atlantic Conference Beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year, the UVA-Wise Highland Cavaliers will compete in the South Atlantic Conference, joining schools from Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The new conference allows for reduced travel and more classroom time for student athletes. Schools in the conference include familiar regional institutions, such as Carson Newman University, Tusculum College, Lincoln Memorial University, and Mars Hill University. Crockett Award In 1995, Clinch Valley College presented its first Samuel R. Crockett Award. The award is named for Samuel R. Crockett Jr. who in 1954 was the University of Virginia s extension division representative in Southwest Virginia. Mr. Crockett was instrumental in establishing a division of the University of Virginia in Wise. This award is presented to an individual who has made significant efforts toward strengthening the relationship between the University of Virginia and the College. Since 1995, the award has been given 17 times. Past recipients include John T. Casteen III in 1995, Leonard Sandridge in 1998 and again in 2007, and recently President Teresa A. Sullivan in 2016. Ms. Henry will announce the 2018 recipient of the award. 7
