GENERAL OVERVIEW Page 2 On Thursday October 20, 2016, Associated Builders and Contractors of Greater Houston will present the Excellence in Construction Awards at the Wortham Theater in Downtown Houston. This event, established in 2000, recognizes outstanding projects in the commercial and industrial construction industry. Members in good standing have the opportunity to submit completed projects into the formal competition. Top scoring projects will be showcased at the evening program. In addition, winners are also given local and national media attention in the form of press releases, including a page dedicated to the awards in ABC s Build Houston Magazine and the Houston Business Journal. Winners at the local level are eligible, and encouraged, to participate in the ABC National Awards competition which takes place in March 2017 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE You are invited to submit your outstanding project(s) for consideration in the 2016 ABC Greater Houston Excellence in Construction awards competition. Projects will be evaluated by local Owners, Architects and Engineers on safety, execution of design, craftsmanship, attention to detail, installation, and other considerations. ABC Greater Houston also awards the coveted Best of Houston traveling award to a local ICE (highest award) winning project that best represents the industry and our great city. ELIGIBILITY Project(s) must be completed by an ABC member in good standing. Eligible projects must meet the following standards: No project with a safety-related fatality, regardless of contractor trade, will be considered for an Excellence in Construction award. General Contractors, Specialty Contractors and Suppliers are eligible to submit. Projects must be completed between October 2014 and October 2016 *. Projects built outside of Houston will be accepted if portions of the project were managed through member s Houston office. All entries must follow the Entry Criteria section of this booklet. A $275 entry fee must accompany each notebook submission. Entries must be completed electronically, visit www.abchouston.org/eic or call 713-523-6222 for more information. All completed entries must be completed online no later than 4pm on Friday, August 5, 2016. Contact Jennifer Woodruff at (713)523-6222 for more information. SUBMITTAL PROCESS Please note, 3-ring binders and paper entries will no longer be accepted. This year, the Excellence In Construction Submittal process will done electronically. Visit www.abchouston.org/eic for more details. JUDGING A panel of judges from the Owner, Architect and Engineering communities will review, evaluate and select EIC winners. Entries must earn a cumulative minimum of 85 points to be eligible to win an ICE award and must earn a cumulative total of at least 70 points to qualify for a Merit Award. Only one ICE award will be given in each category. Each project will be judged individually; consequently, awards may not be given in all categories. No member or staff of the ABC Greater Houston Chapter will participate as judges. Winners will be announced at the Excellence In Construction awards banquet to be held on October 20, 2016. The Judging Committee reserves the right to reassign a project to a different category or realign categories.

Entry Criteria Page 4 Overall Presentation 5 Points Uploaded documents should be pleasing to the eye and legible. Points will be deducted for font that is too small to easily read. Points will be deducted for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and other typographical errors. Contracted Scope 10 Points Include up to one full page, ensuring legibility when selecting font design and size. Provide a description of your scope for this project including type of construction, size of project, contract value, length of project, percentage of labor that is self-performed, percentage of sub-contracted work performed by fellow members, associates and suppliers. Describe the opportunities you provided to the construction community to participate based on merit. Narrative 30 Points Include up to four pages, ensuring legibility when selecting font design and size. Provide a written narrative indicating why this project is special and why it qualifies for an award. The focus of the narrative should be the construction (i.e. erection, installation, modification, grade footprint, etc.) of the project. Be sure to include the following items: Describe any innovative programs relating to quality control Describe any innovative programs relating to scheduling Describe any value analysis/engineering process used on the project Indicate any special obstacles you overcame in completing the project Describe any difficulties or extenuating circumstances encountered in completing the project. Describe any innovative programs or methods related to productivity Photographs 8 Points Submit up to 10 quality photographs (jpg format only) of the project. 8-10 total photos are recommended. To obtain maximum points, include in progress photos for new construction or before and after photos for restoration and renovation projects. It is recommended to include photos that are relevant to the challenges and solutions outlined in the narrative. Provide a short descriptive caption for each photograph in a separate text document, but keep the electronic images clear of any labels or captions. Your digital photos are required to be a minimum of 300 dpi resolution. The photographs must not be submitted within a software program such as PowerPoint or Acrobat and must not include any text or framing that affects the photo. Absolutely no videos are accepted. Photographer s Use Authorization: If any of photos being submitted were taken by a third-party photographer, the photographer s written authorization to use the photos is required. There are two ways to comply: (1) the photographer can sign and date the licensing agreement (included in your dropbox folder), or (2) applicant must submit a letter from the photographer giving ABC authorization to use the photos, which must follow the licensing agreement. The letter should be scanned an included in your dropbox folder. Safety 31 Points No project that involves a prime, multi-prime, subcontractor or any trade related work regardless of the type of contract, that has a safety-related fatality, is eligible for an Excellence in Construction Award. You must include your company s OSHA Form 300A (project specific, if available) for the year(s) the project was under construction. You must also include your company s OSHA Form 300 (project specific, if available) for the year(s) the project was under construction, with personal information redacted. In order to be eligible to win an award, the company must sign the Drug- and Alcohol-Free pledge found at www.drugfreeconstruction.org.

Include answers to the following with the additional documents requested in your Safety Section. Page 5 Did this project have a safety-related fatality? If yes, do not submit your entry for this competition. Include copies of the OSHA Form 300 and OSHA Form 300A for your company (project specific, if available) for the year(s) the project was under construction immediately behind this form in the Project Safety section, with personal information redacted. Does your company have a written Safety and Health Policy Manual? If yes, please include its Table of Contents or provide a one-page summary. Did you develop a site-specific Safety and Health Policy Manual? If yes, please include its Table of Contents or provide a one-page summary. Were toolbox safety meetings held with employees? Were these meetings documented? What was the frequency of meetings? Include a one-page summary or an example up to two pages. Was specialized training conducted on this project? If yes, indicate types on a separate page. Indicate total man-hours for all disciplines included in your contract on this project. General contractors and construction managers must also include all specialty contractors hours on this project.) If a general contractor or construction manager, do you require accident reports from the specialty contractors? If yes, please provide information on the process. Indicate your SIC code. Indicate number of OSHA-recordable accidents on this project (Include accident counts for all specialty contractors under your contract for this item and the next 3 items). Indicate number of OSHA restricted day cases on this project. Indicate number of OSHA lost-time accidents on this project. Compute the project s Total Recordable Incidence Rate (TRIR = Number of recordable accidents x 200,000 / total man hours for the project). Provide the project s organizational chart identifying the person responsible for safety. Provide information about the person responsible for safety on this project and attesting to these accident rates. Include name, title, phone, and email. Has your company signed the Construction for a Drug- And Alcohol-Free Workplace s pledge at www.drugfreeconstruction. org? This is a requirement in order to be eligible for an award. Does your company have a written substance abuse policy? If yes, provide a copy of the table of contents. Additional information regarding any innovative safety and health programs used on this project or the company s overall safety program may be included. References 10 Points Please include a letter of recommendation from the owner as well as letters from the design team and other endorsements, or third-party comments. To obtain maximum points, General Contractors should submit at least a letter from the Owner and Architect. Specialty Contractors and Suppliers should submit at least a letter from General Contractor. Supplemental Materials 2 Points Please provide any miscellaneous supporting materials such as diagrams and other graphics, media coverage and promotion, other awards. (maximum five pages) Accredited Quality Contractor (AQC) 2 Points If your company is an ABC 2016 AQC member, include a copy of the company certificate or renewal letter. STEP Participants 2 points If your company is a Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) participant, include a copy of the company certificate from the year(s) the project was performed or from 2016. Note that STEP participation is not required to submit for an Excellence in Construction award. If you do not have a copy of your certificate email safety@abc.org.
