Spring Break Into Your Career March 12-14, 2005 Spring Break Into Your Career Spring Break Into Your Career has been designed specifically for Nursing and Allied Health Professions students and graduates. This 3 day event will include, educational sessions to help you transition from college to the real world, licensing examination information sessions, and a career fair with health care employers from across the country. Spring Break Into Your Career is THE event for students entering their health care career! Spring Break Into Your Career will be held in beautiful Orlando, Florida at Disney s Coronado Springs Resort. You will be able to enjoy the gorgeous spring weather in Orlando and all Central Florida has to offer. More importantly, you will be able to hear from experts in the health care industry who will be able to help you be the best professional you can be. Educational sessions will include Making Yourself Memorable, How To Interview Successfully and Understanding the Expectations of Employers, The Career Frontier: From Student to Professional Without Fear and Choosing the Right Professional Practice Environment. The AACN and ASAHP will also each hold sessions that will help you plan your career in nursing or allied health. For nursing students and graduates, Kaplan Nursing will present an hour and a half session to help you prepare for the NCLEX. ASAHP will present a session for allied health students and graduates to assist them in determining what career ladder to follow. With a minimum of 10 registrations from your school, 10% of the registration fees will be donated back to your educational facility. Lauren Lillie, RN, BSN is the Director of Recruitment for Semper Care, long-term acute care hospitals across the country. Prior to that she was the Division Recruiter for the HCA North Florida Division Hospitals where she was responsible for enhancing nursing recruitment efforts for hospitals in North and Central Florida. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Texas and worked as a Medical/Surgical RN for 8 years. In this session a career roadmap will be provided than can be used from the time of your first professional position through the life of your career. Emphasis on the transition from student to professional will be discussed with pointers on how to avoid common pitfalls such as dealing with change, becoming overwhelmed and burnout. Join us for a fun discussion of how to minimize fear and retain positive passion for your career. Kate Christmas joined Bernard Hodes Group in 1999, and consults exclusively with health care clients as a principal in the Health Care Division. This Division provides on location consultation on issues such as uncovering contributing factors to high turnover, improving recruitment processes, uncovering and resolving retention issues and preparing for international recruitment. Kate was a hospital based RN for more than twenty years, and held many staff and managerial positions including three years as a flight nurse. Her experience in Human Resources and recruitment also spans more than a decade. She has been a national recruitment presence since the mid 1980 s, including seven years as a Board member of the National Association for Health Care Recruitment (NAHCR). Kate is currently serving a two-year term on the Research committee of the North Carolina Center for Nursing, and has worked with both the NC Center for Nursing and Virginia Partnership for Nursing to promote nursing careers. Kate is a well known national speaker and writer and has written or contributed to numerous articles on recruitment and retention. This session will explore how to identify professional practice environments and what new graduates should look for when screening prospective employers. Besides picking up some practical job-seeking tips, all attendees will be given a brochure produced by AACN the details what questions you should ask when screening employers.

Barbara Irwin, RN, MSN Monday, March 14, 2005 Spring Break Into Your Career March 12-14, 2005 NCLEX: How to Prepare and Is Additional Education in Your Future 1:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. 4:30 p.m. Do you want to know more about the NCLEX-RN examination? Would you like to learn about career options open to you as a registered nurse? RN to MSN to PhD offers you the most up-todate information about the NCLEX-RN examination. The various career paths for nurses, advanced degrees required, and the admission procedure to graduate school will also be discussed. Irwin is National Curriculum Director for Nursing Programs at Kaplan, Inc. She supervises development of the Kaplan Course for preparation for the NCLEX-RN examination for U.S. nursing students and international nurses, as well as integrated testing programs implemented by nursing schools. While tutoring students who were unsuccessful on the NCLEX-RN exam, Irwin developed a series of innovative critical-thinking strategies that help students achieve success on this highstakes test. She presents Strategy Seminars and Test-Taking seminars for the NCLEX-RN exam to nursing school faculties and students world-wide. She has co-authored books about preparing for the NCLEX-RN exam. Faculty shortages will continue to loom large in the future. New practitioners of today eventually may want to obtain extra credentials that will enable them to work in the classroom and research settings. Part of selecting where to go to work could depend on what kinds of opportunities exist for advancement such as tuition reimbursement and other incentives offered by an employer.
