Take some time to stake and clean the leaves of your plants, this allows for better presentation. Also, please do not bring newly-purchased plants for the show table. The show table is an outlet for members to share the great job they have done in growing and flowering their orchids; therefore, please respect the unwritten rule of owning and growing an orchid for a minimum of 6 months.

April Program was presented by Carol Holdren by Mary Lee Tabeling Our April meeting featured Carol Holdren, who treated us to an excellent presentation on the 11 orchids we should have in our collection. As Vice- Chair of the West Palm Beach Judging Center, she encouraged us to join the American Orchid Society and to check out www.wpbjudging.org. She invited us to join the WPBJC judging of orchids at Flamingo Gardens on the fourth Saturday of the month. You do not need to be an AOS member to attend or to bring a plant for judging. This takes place every month at Flamingo Gardens, with education at 12:30 and judging at 2 p.m. She explained that when filling out a judging form for your prize orchid, the names of orchid species are not capitalized while hybrid names are capitalized in title case. If you missed the April Meeting, here is a rundown of her top 11: 1. Phalaneopsis Baldan s Kaleidoscope (Lots and lots of big blooms) 2. Phal. amabilis 3. Laelia anceps hybrids like Lc. Santa Barbara Sunset (buy sea level plants) 4. Cattleytonia Why Not 5. x Lc. Gold Digger 6. =Gct. Lawless Gloriana 7. Schomburgkia splendida var. cauca (huge) 8. Brassavola nodosa hybrids such as Bl Yellow Bird (blooms all the time) 9. Colmanara/Odontocidium/Oncostele Wildcat 10. Psychopsis Kalihi (doesn t like repotting) 11. Paphiopedilum St. Swithin (easiest to grow, a primary cross) Her power point presentation showcased her beautiful screened backyard pool enclosure where she keeps many of her orchids on rolling carts. For her western exposure, Carol uses and recommends a product called ALUMINET Thermal Screen Shade Cloth. Carol can be reached at cjholdren@gmail.com. 2014 CALENDAR May 6th Meeting Ken and Judy Russ Backyard Growing June 2nd Meeting is our annual anniversary, potluck party, photo contest and elections.
