May E-Newsletter Over a Century of Service! T he Chamber held it s 2015 Small Business Awards of Excellence on Tuesday, April 21. Thirty businesses competed for the six awards presented by the Chamber. The big surprise of the day was the tie for Small Business of the Year, the first time this has happened in the 13 year history of the awards. With identical scores, The Girls & Me Boutique and Morristown Pediatric Dentistry shared the top honor. Presenting the awards to the winning businesses were Amy Hemminger and Joe Swann with Purkey Carter Compton Swann & Carter, Award Sponsor. Also expressing their congratulations were representatives from the Event Sponsors Wimberly Lawson Wright Daves & Jones (Mary Moffat and Eric Harrison), Jefferson City Health & Rehab Center (Karen Crumbly) and HomeTrust Bank (DeAnna Hughes and Eileen Arnwine). Accepting the award for The Girls & Me were Julie Campbell and Janet Hofer. Accepting for Morristown Pediatric Dentistry were Rebecca Nies and Dr. Aleighia Helderman. Awards were also presented to the Retail Business of the Year, Service Business of the Year, Hospitality/Leisure Business of the Year, Healthcare Business of the Year and the Horizon Award to a business in operation for 5 years or less. A s the stress of an election comes to a close for many, business and life continues to operate within the chamber community. We want to thank those who have served and for their leadership and welcome the newly elected leaders as they shape and form our community in their own and their constituents vision. Looking forward, our new council and mayor have many challenges in front of them and our business community looks forward to being an active part of this process. It is important as decisions are made in the growth and development of our community that your voices are heard. Please be sure to let us know of concerns that affect your business so these can be relayed to the appropriate parties. I think as a business, it is also important to remember patience. Easy to say if you have no issues, right? I say this because with our tax rate being one of Listen, Research, Learn.then VOTE! the lowest in the state, how can we expect 100% of our concerns corrected the minute we bring them to light. I think as a business, it is important to understand the prioritization of the city s projects based on funding. While your voice and needs are important, this voice goes much further and makes a much greater impact when coming through the appropriate channels to the appropriate parties instead of in random manners such as offhanded Facebook comments. As the new council gets up to speed, I have no doubt they will address each concern and do their best to accommodate as many projects as possible. Again, a time to remember patience. These elected positions are thankless and it takes a very special person to serve, so be sure to thank these leaders for what they do in and for our community and you may also show your support by attending a city council meeting on the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m. 2
