Cause for Applause A newsletter brought to you by Placer Community Foundation SPRING 2015 PCF Receives Generous Bequest for Operations With a planned gift of $250,000, Auburn, CA native, Janice Forbes, left Placer Community Foundation (PCF) with its largest gift to support operations ever! Janice passed away in 2013, and as the founding Chairman of the Board, she will always have a special place in PCF history. Janice or Booie, as her childhood friends used to call her, had an unwavering vision for local philanthropy in Placer County and recognized the positive effect giving could have on the current and future needs throughout the county. It s a tremendous gift for us, said Pamela Constantino. As the current Chairman of the Board, I am honored to follow in Janice s footsteps and this gift is another example of how Janice s belief in the value of the Foundation continues to flourish. In 2004 Janice spearheaded the board in establishing Placer Community Foundation. Since 2005 the Foundation s assets have grown to $12 million, and the Foundation has distributed nearly $5 million in grants to local charities since 1948. Janice understood the value of maintaining these important resources in the forefront of Placer County s growth and development and her gift will be imperative for the future of PCF and Placer County. Janice Forbes Placer Community Foundation Has Its Forever Home! We are fortunate to have received a generous donation from Old Town Auburn Preservation Society (OTAPS) of a wonderful historic building. The building located at 219 Maple Street is now the permanent home of PCF. To literally top it off, the building was recently provided a new roof through a kind gift by Ken Geil, in memory of Janice Forbes. Constantino Family Takes Care of the Community They Love Pam Constantino and her husband Alex moved to Placer County in 1986. To many they are still considered newcomers; however, after establishing their businesses and raising their children locally their roots are now planted deep within our community. While shuffling their kids to and from their many activities, Pam and Alex became aware of the community assets and the necessity to care for them. We d ask ourselves, What would happen if the community pool needs a major repair? or Who was refurbishing the local theatre?, Pam recalled. When our kids graduated from college we found we had some extra time and resources and we could finally support the people who were taking care of this community we ve grown to love. The Constantino Family It was fate when Pam and Alex met Veronica at Carpe Vino in Auburn one evening and through their conversation they learned a little about PCF. In the weeks that followed they learned that Veronica and her staff were experts about the needs of the community and how the Constantino family could best contribute. Pam and Alex realized that their support could be leveraged when guided by the Community Foundation s knowledge and combined with the generosity of the other local donors. We have been able to contribute to the renovation of the Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center, the community garden program, the arts endowment, the Meadow Vista Community Center, and the Placer Land Trust Trail expansion campaign, Pam reflected. I know that with Placer Community Foundation we made a difference that we could not have made by ourselves, added Pam. Because our gift to the Community Needs Fund adds to an endowment, our family s gift will last longer than our lifetime. Pam currently serves as the PCF Board Chairman and continues to learn about opportunities to improve the health of Placer County. We are honored to have Pam and Alex as a devoted part of our community. Community Needs Fund Offers Added Security for Local Safe House Stand Up Placer (SUP) is a Placer County nonprofit that provides comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their families. Just a few of the numerous services provided by Stand Up Placer are a 24-hour crisis line, supportive housing, legal and social Stand Up Placer Executive Director, Michelle Coleman services, individual and group counseling and an emergency shelter (Safe House) for battered women and their children. Their Safe House, which is located in a secure and confidential location, offers survivors of abuse and violence a safe place to heal and recover and to develop strategies to build their future. The Safe House was recently in need of funding for repair of their fencing. Placer Community Foundation s Community Needs Fund was able to provide the financial support required. The Community Needs Fund is a permanent fund that was developed to improve the lives of all our residents. Its flexibility allows us to respond to priorities as they arise in our community. Instances like this are specifically why the Community Needs Fund was formed, explained Veronica Blake, CEO of PCF. It s gratifying to know that we can add additional support to the vital nonprofit organizations which make up Placer County. The safety of the survivors of domestic and sexual violence is a crucial component of the work we do, Stand Up Placer Executive Director, Michelle Coleman said. With the support of the Community Needs Fund, there is once again a functioning gate providing the privacy and security they deserve. Building a Brighter Tomorrow for Today s Youth President Franklin Delano Roosevelt once said We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future, and at Placer Community Foundation we couldn t agree more. With today s busy lives, it s easy to be uninformed about the needs of today s youth. We often forget that they are tomorrow s future, that they will become the fundamental members and workforce of our communities. While some children make a smooth transition into their teens and young adulthood, many Placer County youth will face serious life hurdles. Lack of positive role models, education, or viable life skills create many emotional and behavioral issues. Youth Challenges in Placer County * SCHOOL SUCCESS 11% of high school seniors won t graduate 23% won t move on to college 7% are not in school or working The Giving Circle supports local youth serving nonprofits such as ReDirect Nuevo Camino in Lincoln. These young people have learned Aztec dancing in celebration of their heritage. However, research shows youth are resilient! Placer Community Foundation s Giving Circle provides our most susceptible youth with opportunities through the Youth Development Program. Committed and caring adults fund programs where youth can learn and have personal input while developing critical life and leadership skills, forming lasting relationships and creating a stronger sense of belonging and personal empowerment. Nonprofit Leadership Summit Teaches Purposeful Governance and Powerful Fundraising Experiencing an aha! moment is, at times, an awakening. It s that precise instant you realize something for the very first time. The 5th Annual Nonprofit Leadership Summit was filled numerous aha! moments. One could almost see light bulbs popping up above the participants heads! Board members and key staff from 60 Placer County nonprofit organizations gathered to learn about board recruitment, structure, operations, culture and effective fundraising from nonprofit expert Chuck Loring. Fundraising is not cold calling, it s relationship building, Mr. Loring stated. Simply put, we must friendraise before we fundraise. The nonprofit sector in Placer County is a major employer and contributor to the local economy. Mr. Loring pointed to the National Center for Charitable Statistics which found that in 2000 there were 196 Placer County public charities, not including private and family foundations, with revenue of $140 million. Fourteen years later, in 2014, there are 461 public charities with revenue of $1 billion. Even with this significant increase in nonprofits, successful board development is a challenge for many organizations, no matter their mission or size. The Summit s focus on intentional board recruitment and how to involve board members in effective fundraising was a wow for all attendees. Susie Rodgers, Board Chair of Child Advocates of Placer County shared her aha! moment when she said, We are really about friendraising. The fundraising will follow! The Community Foundation offered this all-day summit free of charge to nonprofits operating along the western slope of Placer County through gifts made to the Foundation s Community Leadership Fund and through the generosity of the sponsors on the opposite page.

Placer County Library Fund Your Library Needs You We are thrilled to introduce the brand new Placer County Library Fund! The fund was established to provide essential, continuing support to libraries throughout the Placer County library system. Placer County libraries offer a place for people to gather and grow through shared resources and experiences. Many ask what the relevance of the library is in the age of the internet and electronic books. However, Placer County libraries remain more important than ever, providing places where the joys of reading and learning in any format and on any device are collectively treasured and nurtured by citizens of all ages, incomes and ethnic backgrounds. Muttley, the BIG Day of Giving mascot Jessica Hubbard, Veronica Blake, Mary George and Jane Mispley I hope many donors in our community will contribute to the fund in support of a thriving library that is intrinsic to community success. Contributions made to the Library Fund will enable the Placer County Library to provide much needed funding for future services, said Mary George, Director of Library Services for Placer County. I believe this funding will be an essential element in our long-term plan to create modern, sustainable libraries that can truly be what today s library visitors demand. Establishment of the fund has been a tremendous, collaborative effort. Friends of the Library groups from Applegate, Auburn, Colfax, Foresthill, Granite Bay, Kings Beach, Loomis, Meadow Vista, Penryn, Rocklin, and Tahoe City and the Literacy Support Council of Placer County each contributed to seed the fund in 2014. Gifts from within the community will grow the Placer County Library Fund; enabling the Placer County Library to purchase additional resource materials, engage in special projects, and extend the library system s outreach into our community via the Bookmobile and other services. PCF s 2014 endowment pool investment performance was 7.96% net of fees.
