Scottish Nursing Guild Nurse Agency 160 Dundee Street Edinburgh EH11 1DQ Telephone: 0131 229 9988 Type of inspection: Announced (short notice) Inspection completed on: 14 June 2017 Service provided by: Independant Clinical Services Ltd Service provider number: SP2007009176 Care service number: CS2007155863

About the service The Scottish Nursing Guild is registered as a Nurse Agency and supplies registered nurses and care staff to hospitals, care homes and private clients in their own home. It supplies nurses and carers all over Scotland and the main office is in Edinburgh. The service has been established in Scotland for many years. It was previously registered with the Care Commission and transferred its registration to the Care Inspectorate on 1 April 2011. The Scottish Nursing Guild also operates a care at home service from the same office. What people told us The outcomes of discussion with relatives and carers and information in e mails confirmed that all were extremely happy with the overall service from The Scottish Nursing Guild Agency. Some of the comments were as follows: "The nurse who covered the first shift has been very well matched to our relative's needs to support her and me. This is a huge support to me." "I contacted eleven organisations in the Edinburgh area and SNG was the only one prepared to supply the support we required at all, never mind within fairly short warning. The SNG motto is "when no one else can. Well they certainly lived up to this mission with us. I cannot praise enough staff nurses (named) for the help and support they gave our family during a very difficult period." Self assessment We did not ask the service to submit a self assessment before this inspection. We considered the information from the self assessment completed before the last inspection and the quality audits undertaken by the service, an external auditor and the clinical governance team. From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of Information Quality of care and support Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership What the service does well Comprehensive information was available to prospective clients in the form of a brochure or The Scottish Nursing Guild agency website. The information sets out what clients can expect from The Scottish Nursing Guild and the responsibilities of the client. This may assist clients to have clear expectations of the service to be provided. Clients can phone to request a booking and the "The Quick Nurse" on-line booking service also allowed clients to page 2 of 5

make bookings and follow the progress of this in real-time. Nurses also used the on-line system to record their availability for work which gave them control over their working hours and helped the placement staff to see who was available for work and when. The IT systems used enabled staff to check the needs of each client and cross reference to staff records which helped to ensure that staff placed with the client had the appropriate skills and experience required. Systems were in place to obtain regular feedback from clients. This included contact with, and visits to clients, written comments and quality assurance questionnaires. This helped the agency to make any changes and or improvements where identified in placing staff with clients. The audits undertaken by the providers' Clinical Governance team and an external body were also used effectively to identify and action any developments and improvements needed in the agency. Information from contact with clients and from feedback to the service showed a positive view of the quality of service and care provided by Scottish Nursing Guild Agency nurses. Robust systems were in place for staff recruitment which followed best practice guidance and Scottish Nursing Guild policies. Nursing staff were involved in recruitment of new staff which also assisted to ensure appropriate people were employed. Robust systems were also in place to check staff qualifications and training requirements and that refresher training was undertaken within given timescales. These checks also included registration with NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council). Records we checked showed that nurses were appropriately registered and registrations were up to date. Overall we saw that The Scottish Nursing Guild were committed to providing a very professional and well-managed service to ensure that nurses with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience were placed to meet the requirements of each client. What the service could do better The Scottish Nursing Guild Agency should continue in their aim to "provide the best professional solutions to meet the requirements of each of our clients, whilst recognising and rewarding the exceptional skills and efforts of our agency worker."
