Job Title: Security and Facilities Supervisor Contract: 1 year Fixed Term Contract Reports to: Head of Operations & Administration Location: Chester Beatty Library, Dublin Castle, Dublin, Ireland Date: January 2018 The Chester Beatty Library The Chester Beatty Library contains a world famous collection of manuscripts, prints, miniature paintings, early printed books and objets d art from countries across Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. The Collection is principally focused on the written word and its associated painted and printed images. The Library is one of Ireland s national cultural institutions. It is a public charitable trust established under the will of the late Sir Alfred Chester Beatty and is governed by a Board of Trustees. The Western treasures of the Library include some of the earliest sources on papyrus for the bible and a great library of Manichean texts; Armenian and European manuscripts from medieval, Renaissance and modern times; prints, early and fine books and bindings complete a remarkable conspectus of the arts of manuscript production and printing from many cultures and periods. Chinese and Japanese painted scrolls and albums, woodblock prints, printed books and decorative arts are among the most important part of the Library s East Asian holdings. The Asian collections also contain material from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tibet, Mongolia, Thailand, Burma (Myanmar) and Indonesia. The Islamic Collections comprise mainly manuscripts and single page paintings and calligraphies. This includes more than 260 complete and fragmentary Qur ans, some dating from the late eighth and ninth centuries and including the work of the leading calligraphers of the Islamic world. Summary Job Purpose The Chester Beatty Library contains a priceless collection of treasures which are on display to the public. The Library receives over 350,000 visitors each year. The Security and Facilities Supervisor has overall management responsibility for the security, buildings and facilities at the Chester Beatty Library. S/he will work with the Senior Management Team and report to the Head of Operations & Administration.

They will form part of a small but dynamic team with the flexibility to adapt to the Library s constantly changing environment. Key Responsibilities To hold overall responsibility for the physical security of the collections in the Library, both in storage and when exhibited to the public. To be responsible for the arrangement of adequate supervision of the public, by preparing and supervising rosters for gallery patrol, switchboard & front desk duty, paying particular attention to the provision of adequate staffing for each operation. To manage a team of 10 Attendant/Senior Attendant staff in relation to rosters, attendance, training and performance appraisal and keep required records To act as a key-holder for the premises and be called upon to respond to fire and security alarm calls and to arrange adequate cover for occasions of emergency call-out. To manage the property and facilities at CBL and to liaise closely with the OPW and other contractors on matters of maintenance in the building and to keep in regular communication with the ICT Manager and Head of Collections, as appropriate, on all matters to do with the technical installations for security, heating, climate control and other building management control systems and on health and safety issues of a technical nature. To supervise, or arrange to have supervised, outside workers in the Library, including the supervision of the contract cleaning staff. To manage Health & Safety for the building and facilities To act as Health & Safety Officer for the building, managing the Library s practice evacuation plan, monitoring First Aid training and certification of staff members To be an integral part of the Emergency Response Team responsible for building recovery and service continuity To maintain all documentation and records required in compliance with Health & Safety, maintenance and security issues To assist in the mounting of exhibitions and internal movement of collections To assist with the technical/it requirements for exhibitions and events on the premises, in consultation with the Library s technical staff To carry out other appropriate duties, as required
Essential qualifications and abilities: Required A minimum of three years experience managing security and facilities including managing a team of security and customer/public facing team members Proven excellent supervisory, management, motivational and team leading skills Experience of managing rosters and on-call rotas A minimum of three years experience in building, maintenance or facilities management Very strong technical skills A minimum of one year s experience as a Safety Officer/Safety Manager and a solid working knowledge of Fire Safety and Occupational Health & Safety Excellent report writing and communication skills Excellent proven staff relations and industrial relation skills Very good PC skills including MS Office Excel and Word An interest in and commitment to the work of the Chester Beatty Library Desirable A qualification in Security Management A qualification in Occupational Health & Safety A qualification in Supervisory Management Knowledge of the Irish language would be considered an advantage Experience working in a museum/library A technical qualification will be an advantage A strong interest in the arts and culture Salary A fixed-term contract salary applies of 31,011 per annum. The person will also be required to join the Single Public Service Pension Scheme. Annual Leave The annual leave allowance will be 20 working days a year, subject to the usual conditions regarding the granting of annual leave, is on the basis of a five day week and is exclusive of the usual public holidays. Conditions Attendance will be required some weekends, Public Holidays and evenings. The post will be subject to satisfactory Garda clearance, a medical check and a probationary period.
