INTRODUCTION This section includes information about the College Credit for Heroes initiative, Central Texas College s role in the initiative, an overview of the online College Credit for Heroes System at http://www.collegecreditforheroes.org, and purpose of this manual. About the College Credit for Heroes Initiative Launched in 2011 by the Texas Workforce Commission, the College Credit for Heroes initiative seeks to maximize college credits awarded to veterans and servicemembers for their military experience in order to expedite each individual s transition into the Texas workforce. The Texas Workforce Commission is committed to honoring veterans and servicemembers by helping them enter the Texas workforce with the recognition of the skills they earned while honorably serving their country. During Phase I, seven Texas community colleges were selected to participate in the College Credit for Heroes (CCH) program. The colleges developed models for awarding college credit by evaluating military training, including testing and prior learning assessments, with the goal of implementing a statewide assessment system for other colleges and training providers. The initial focus was on allied health careers. During Phase II, six new Texas institutions of higher education (institutions) were selected and five of the colleges from Phase I were selected to expand their offerings to veteran students. Phase II expands the College Credit for Heroes initiative to other programs and locations in Texas. For information about each institution s project, visit the College Credit for Heroes website at http://www.collegecreditforheroes.org. Central Texas College s Role in the College Credit for Heroes Initiative Central Texas College (CTC) was an early program partner in Phase I and continues to participate in the initiative as a Phase II partner college. CTC s initial project was to develop the online College Credit for Heroes (CCH) System for Texas veterans and servicemembers to receive an evaluation of their military experiences and training. In Phase II CTC continues to expand the College Credit for Heroes portal. As military occupations and courses are evaluated based on American Council on Education (ACE) Guide recommendations, college credit recommendations are added to the CCH System databases. 1

College Credit for Heroes System The online College Credit for Heroes System can be used by eligible veterans and servicemembers and those assisting them to: Search for recommended college credits for enlisted military occupations and courses, Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) courses, and designated nationally recognized examinations (CLEP, DANTES, and Excelsior). Request an evaluation of military experience and training. Request a College Credit for Heroes transcript of college credits evaluated sent to a participating college or university. College credits transcripted through the CCH System may be applicable to some programs of study but not applicable to others. Each institution and its faculty retain the right to determine applicability to specific degree programs. Communicate with CCH staff; check the status of an evaluation request; and upload, view, and download military evaluation results and related documents. Getting Started on the College Credit for Heroes Portal To view college credit recommendations in the searchable databases, individuals can register as a guest or CCH account holder. Guests have limited access to the portal while CCH account holders have full access. Anyone can register as a guest and use the CCH search functions to receive an immediate estimate of credits based on military occupations held and military courses completed. Registered CCH account holders can (a) search the CCH databases and receive an unofficial analysis of college credits awarded for their military experiences and training and (b) request an official evaluation of their military experiences and training. To register as a CCH account holder and request an official military evaluation, the veteran or servicemember must: live in Texas or be assigned to duty in Texas or be a Texas resident (legal state of residence is Texas) or be relocating to Texas within 120 days. Requesting an Evaluation of Military Experiences and Training and CCH Transcript Eligible veterans and servicemembers can request an unofficial or official evaluation of their military experiences and training by initiating the online evaluation request forms on the portal. Documents required to process an official evaluation include: 2

1. An official Joint Services Transcript (JST). 2. DD214 if prior military. 3. Official CLEP, DSST, or Excelsior transcript from testing agency if examination with score is not on JST. Individuals may request a CCH transcript by completing the online transcript request form. Veterans and servicemembers are encouraged to request a transcript at the same time the individual submits an official evaluation request. The transcript will be issued upon completion of the official evaluation. Additional CCH transcripts can be requested as needed. About this Manual This manual represents the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard ratings and military courses evaluated for college credit at the time the manual was developed, and includes college credit recommendations for the CLEP and DANTES subject examinations. This manual is intended for use when Internet access is unavailable and as a reference guide. Visit the College Credit for Heroes website to view all ratings and military courses that have been evaluated for college credit. The CCH System searchable databases are updated almost daily. In addition, the College Credit for Heroes portal includes college credit recommendations for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps occupations and courses and Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) courses. Disclaimer College credits evaluated through the College Credit for Heroes portal are recommendations. Credit on a CCH transcript may be applicable to some programs of study but not applicable to others. Each participating college or university and its faculty retain the right to determine applicability to specific degrees and certificates. Servicemembers and veterans should seek additional advising from their college or university. Veterans and servicemembers are required to follow their college s or university s admission and transcript processes for award of college credit and are subject to the same policies and procedures, along with any revisions thereof that apply to all prospective and current students. 3

Navy Enlisted Ratings (NER) College Credit Recommendations This section includes the college credit recommendations for the United States Navy Enlisted Ratings (NER) that have been evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE) and mapped to Texas Workforce and academic college courses where appropriate. NERs are general enlisted occupations that consist of specific skills and abilities. Acceptance of evaluated credits in a program of study is based on the policies of the receiving institution of higher education. For example, many colleges and universities require that the rating be held within the last seven years for college credit to be accepted. NER - 1
