Mission & Impact Statements Mission Unite and empower the Tennessee Peace Corps community through service and support. Background The Peace Corps was created in 1961 and Tennessee has always been known as the Volunteer State, however it never had a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer organization like most states until 2008 when this organization was created. So in 2008, a small group of RPCVs started meeting and decided to become bigger than just a simple group. When Peace Corps volunteers take their oath of service, they promise to uphold three goals and the last goal starts upon a volunteer's return home where he/she educates Americans about the countries they serve in. We also wanted to give back to the countries we served in and formed a partnership with the Peace Corps Partnership Fund where we can give financial support to projects that are facilitated by current Peace Corps Volunteers who are originally from Tennessee. Impact Since our inception in 2008, we have been able to grant over $14,500 to 34 projects in 20 countries, expand our local volunteer partnerships with six organizations (Habitat for Humanity, Rebuilding Together, Girl Scouts, Nashville Public Television, Hands on Nashville, & Salvation Army), and increased our Youth Education Program to Nashville Metro Public Schools. Programs Programs Youth Education Description Ongoing education about Peace Corps service is one of the core tenants for TNRPCVs. Since the group s inception, TNRPCVs have worked to promote awareness, increase knowledge of and coordinate between various RPCV groups and individuals across the state of TN in youth education about international cultures through our Peace Corps experiences. Returned Peace Corps Volunteers hold a deep knowledge of little understood cultures that school children would otherwise never hear of if it were not for TNRPCVs visiting their classrooms. We hope that by preparing youth that the world isn t a scary place and that people from other cultures fundamentally are not much different from us that maybe we will have a chance at world peace. We have created a website (www.tnrpcv.org) which serves as an information hub for TNRPCVs news and events related to our group. Budget 150 Population Served,, Peace Corps Week Description The Tennessee Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (TNRPCVs) took an oath when they swore in as official Peace Corps Volunteers to uphold the Third Goal of the Peace Corps which is to educate American citizens about the host countries and cultures they served in. Every year, TNRPCVs, in conjunction with the National Peace Corps Association and the Peace Corps host Peace Corps Week during the first week of March. In past years, TNRPCVs have simply given presentations at schools, but in 2011, TNRPCVs held several educational and engagement events honoring five decades of service, effectiveness overseas and hopefully inspiring the next generation of volunteers. The Partnership Program is a 501(c)3 organization created by the U.S. Peace Corps to identify and administer financial donations of support, within the context of the goals of the Peace Corps, to small-scale, community-initiated international development projects. These projects are jointly proposed by Peace Corps Volunteers and their host-country community leaders to address basic needs. The projects that the TNRPCVs support are those facilitated by current Peace Corps Volunteers from Tennessee. To make assurances that the projects are legitimate, the projects are overseen and approved by Peace Corps staff and made public for the TNRPCVs to support.
