News Clip Nov 12, 2014 Navy League of the United States Palm Beach Council Citizens in Support of the Sea Services Sandpiper s Cove Luncheon North Palm Beach Over 40 Palm Beach Council Navy Leaguers turned out for a fun and delicious lunch and were treated to a solid presence from our local U.S. Coast Guard personnel. Coast Guard Station Lake Worth Inlet Commanding Officer CWO4 Gene Gibson was the keynote speaker and entertained the audience with his personal stories of life in the Coast Guard. The staff at the club under the leadership of Dolores Schlik supported the luncheon with outstanding service in the beautiful waterfront dining room.
Chief Warrant Officer Gibson brought four of his outstanding performers with him, and they provided most interesting conversation throughout the lunch. Bos n Chief Petty Officer Zachary Hornby XO at Station LWI and recently selected for promotion to Chief Warrant Officer status. Machinery Technician Chief Petty Officer Michael Riedel Chief Engineer at Station LWI and recently seleceted for advancement to Senior Chief Petty Officer; Chief Riedel will soon transfer to the Fast Response Cutter WEBBER in Miami. Bos n Petty Officer 3 rd Class Rachael Green an outstanding performer at Station LWI who was surprised by her skipper announcing today that she had been selected as the command s Sailor of the Quarter Fireman(FN) Gerrido Vielljo was cited by CWO Gibson for his outstanding performance in a recent, significant Law Enforcement event off-shore.
Council member Ken Lee served as emcee for the day and announced the Council s recent (two days ago) approval of a $200 donation to the Station LWI Morale & Recreation fund, and Treasurer Eric Rydstrom presented the XO with two crisp $100 bills. Frank & Elizabeth Leonetti immediately upped the donation by contributing an additional $100 on the spot. Thank you Leonetti s for your consistent outstanding support!! Today s meeting was the council s first since the passing of our longtime shipmate Peter Knight. Peter was instrumental in establishing and leading the Palm Beach Council for many years. With Marybelle Knight present today, the entire assembled group stood for a moment of silence in fond remembrance of our good friend Peter Knight. Ken Lee also announced and congratulated the slate of Officers and Directors that was presented to the Board on Monday by Nominating Committee Co-chairs Sumner Hushing and Jack Veasy. For next year the slate will include: President Jack Hanscom VP Membership Patricia Reybold Exec. VP Ken Lee VP Youth Prog s Nancy Fish Treasurer Eric Rydstrom Ball Comm. Chair Catherine Brister Secretary Cindy Saulog New Director Lou Palumbo New Director Michael Hurley Several other slots are yet to be filled and will be announced soon. The slate will be presented for voting at the December 9 th Members Meeting at the Sailfish Club in Palm Beach; this voting coincides with luncheon there on that day.
Speaking of Jack Veasy, he continues to progress in his recovery from recent surgery and passed his regards along to his council mates in a morning phone call with Ken Lee. Judy Baillargeon visited Jack after the meeting to let him know how we got along in his absence. Elizabeth Rogers brought three guests to the meeting, and they were encouraged to join as members. Welcome! Mary Ellen Gardner M.J. McElewary Dianne Gray Our council members Marc and Jenine Oliveri attended today s luncheon; Marc continues his very busy schedule as president of the Palm Beach/Martin Counties Chapter of MOAA (Military Officers Assoc. of America). New members Phil and Carol Harris were welcomed to their first meeting, along with their sponsor, Sonia Foster. Ken Lee presented Chief Warrant Officer Gibson with one of our Palm Beach Council Challenge Coins in appreciation of his joining us today.
Council Member Sonia Foster looked very sharp at today s luncheon in her Coast Guard Auxiliary Officer uniform. Taking advantage of today s assembly, Navy Ball Committee Chair Catherine Brister held a committee meeting in the dining room immediately following lunch. It appears that she has assembled a strong committee and has many elements of the October 2015 Ball being actively planned already. Jerry Nelinson provided principal photography services today, aided by Lou Palumbo. They tried hard to include everyone, and hopefully the following photos from the day will do just that. Thanks Jerry and Lou!!
We had a ball! Come join us for our next luncheon Tue Dec 9 th Sailfish Club 1338 N. Lake Way Palm Beach Flyer Coming Soon!
