2 LG&E KU/WHAS-11 ExCEL Award PURPOSE: The purpose of the LG&E KU/WHAS-11 Excellence in Classroom and Educational Leadership (ExCEL) Award is to recognize and reward the contributions of the public schools and the teaching profession to the development and well-being of your young people and community. This Award recognizes public school teachers who exemplify teaching excellence using innovation, excitement, and enthusiasm in their teaching methodology; who maintain meaningful personal relationships with students, parents, colleagues and community members; are role models of professionalism and citizenry; and are personally committed to continued professional development and enhancement. ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES: To be eligible for the LG&E KU/WHAS-11 ExCEL Award, the individual must be currently a fulltime classroom teacher who has taught in an elementary, middle, high, or special school in the Jefferson County Public School District for at least three years. The term "teacher" includes everyone for whom certification is required, with the exception of those who are administrators, goal clarity coaches, supervisors, counselors, resource teachers, and school psychologists. Applicants who become administrators, supervisors, counselors, resource teachers, goal clarity coaches, and school psychologists at any time during the screening phase or after their selection to the ExCEL pool, or applicants who are no longer employed by the Jefferson County Public School District become ineligible for the ExCEL Award. 3 Application Guidelines The applicant must complete and submit the ExCEL Award Application Form on page 5 of the packet. The applicant must submit a typed resumé (no more than two pages) detailing his/her educational background, teaching experience, community involvement, awards, and publications. The application and resume must be typed using 12-point type in Times New Roman font. Resumé must be typed on 8.5 x 11 white paper. You must send all requested documents for your application in one 10"x13" office envelope. Please do not fold or staple documents and do not include documents in a folder, binder, etc. If the documents are not submitted as requested, the application packet will be returned to you. You must include only the requested documents. No other materials will be accepted. Incomplete applications will be disqualified. Send original documents with original signatures. Completed applications are due by Friday, May 18, 2018. Copies of documents, faxes, and emails will not be accepted. 4 SCREENING PROCESS: The screening process will incorporate two phases: Phase I -- Conference/Observation Phase A pre-observation conference (15-minute minimum) will be conducted at the local school site with the candidate and observation team. This will provide the candidate an opportunity to share pertinent information concerning the lesson and/or classroom plans with the team. Candidates in Phase I will be observed in their respective classrooms by the team. Teams will observe a complete lesson with a minimum time limit of thirty minutes. Each team member will provide an overall score for the observation. The observation score will then be used to recommend candidates for Phase II. Phase II -- Interview Phase Candidates who advance to Phase II will be interviewed by members of an interview team. Each candidate will have an opportunity to present his/her individual views on questions related to excellence in teaching and educational leadership. Based on the observation and interview process, a pool of candidates will be recommended to LG&E KU/WHAS11 for final consideration. Because of the confidentiality of information, Observation and Interview scores or information will not be shared with candidates, principals, or other JCPS staff.
