SAN BERNARDINO 1965 JliiHk 1980 I COLLEGE GEARS UP FOR 15TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION April 18, 1980 15th ANNIVERSARY It's homecoming, parents day, high school day and PLANNING ACCELERATES a gigantic spring fling all rolled into one. It's the college's 15th anniversary Open House on Sunday, April 27. "And the day promises to hold something for people of all ages and interests," claims Jeanne Hogenson, chair of the anniversary steering committee. "The Open House is planned to commemorate the college's 15 years pf service and to give the public an opportunity to sample the academic programs, activities, cultural events and facilities on our campus," she added. "We hope as many faculty, staff and students as possible will join in the day's fest i vi t ies." Reservations for the Alumni Awards Brunch must be made today through the Dean of Students' Office (ext. 752^). If space permits late reservations may be accepted, again please call Ext. 7524. Also, tickets for the late afternoon barbecue must be purchased by today. Only a limited number of tickets will be available after today and can be purchased on a first come, first serve basis at the barbecue on the 27th. The brunch begins at 11:15 a.m. in the Commons and the barbecue begins at 4 p.m. in the Commons Patio. Everyone is invited to attend both events. A complete schedule of the day's activities will be published in the April 25 Bulletin. An updated version is currently available in the Public Affairs Office. ALL FACULTY AND STAFF Special Invitations have been printed for the use URGED TO INVITE A FRIEND of faculty and staff to extend a personal invitation for the anniversary to the public. Each Bulletin reader is urged to write a message on the attached invitation and send it to an off-campus friend who might be interested in the college or some aspect of the day's program. Then just deposit the invitation in your office mail bag; postage will be applied by the mail room. Additional invitations are available at the Public Affairs Office, the Activities Office, the Student Union and the School of Natural Sciences. VOLUNTEERS FOR 15TH The Activities Office is looking for staff members who ANNIVERSARY WANTED are willing to work as information aid volunteers at the anniversary celebration. There are two shifts that need to be covered: from 10 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and from 1-4:30 p.m. All staff volunteers will receive a free Cal State T-shirt. If interested call the Activities Office soon, ext. 7407.
5-KILOMETER FAMILY A late entry on the anniversary's schedule is a RUN, A LATE ENTRY TO 5-K Family Run For Fun. A special feature of this ANNIVERSARY SCHEDULE event, set to begin at 8:30 a.m., is the family division. A husband and wife or any three members of a family may enter as a unit. Pre-registration fees of $5, which include a T-shirt, or $2 without must be made through the Running Center in Rialto, phone 874-5^80. Late registrations will be accepted that morning for $1 more. CEREMONY TO OPEN Cal State's first graduating class buried a time capsule 1967 TIME CAPSULE in 1967 that will be opened Tuesday, April 22 near the flagpole by the Administration Building. The ceremony will take place at 12 noon. The capsule is said to contain a variety of materials from the first two years of the college's existence, along with letters from students, faculty and administrators giving predictions on the future of the college. EARTH DAY TO BE The tenth anniversary of Earth Day will be celebrated CELEBRATED AT CSCSB at Cal State Tuesday, April 22. A panel discussion by a trio of authoritative speakers will highlight the event. A variety of informational booths covering environmental concerns will be scattered throughout the college's Student Union patio. Free literature. Earth Day buttons, biodegradable bumper stickers and more will be available. This event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the panel discussion at 12 noon in the Student Union Multipurpose room. FACULTY MEMBER TO A tuba recital will be given Wednesday, April 23 by GIVE TUBA RECITAL Keating Johnson, director of bands at Cal State. The program will begin at 8:15 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Creative Arts Building. General admission is $1.50; students and children will be admitted free. Johnson will play a romantic concerto by Lebedev, a composer of the Moscow Conservatory; a sonata by Hartley; an avante-garde work by University of Redlands composer Barney Chi Ids; and finally Sonata in E Flat for flute and harpsichord by J.S. Bach. The last piece was transcribed for tuba by Johnson. STUDENT ART SHOW FEATURES Lenticular clouds are rarely seen in this area, LENTICULAR CLOUDS but may be viewed in an art exhibit which goes on display at Cal State Tuesday, April 22. Paintings and prints featuring lenticular clouds will be shown in Gallery Two of the Fine Arts Building, with an opening reception April 22 at 7 p.m. The work is by Melissa Munson Cavette, a senior art major from Redlands. The show will be on display through May 6. COLLEGE SAYS GOOD-BYE Corky Moffett, secretary to the dean of students» TO AN ORIGINAL FOUNDER will say good-bye to the college today after 16 years of service. More informally known to her friends as "The Pink Lady" for her Infatuation with all that is pink, she joined the college before it was even built. In 196^, the college was Just a single-story office located on Mt. View Ave. in San Bernardino. It housed the first 15 administrators and staff, a skeleton crew that was responsible for putting Cal State, San Bernardino together. Corky Moffett was among them. "i was originally hired part-time and then shortly became secretary to the college's first dean. Dr. Robert Fisk. Cal State's present dean of students, Dr. Kenton Monroe was to follow in 1965. "I have enjoyed my experience at the college thoroughly and will miss the many good friends 1 have made," she said. "I hope everyone will keep In touch; I'll Just be around the corner." There are so many things she plans to do with her retirement: "my husband and I wi11 have to live to 120 to get everything accomplished," she added. A much needed rest, travel, organ and creative writing lessons are among her future plans, "but first I must plant more pink flowers In my yard!" CONCERT CHOIR AWARDED The 19"Voice Chamber Singers returned from the BRONZE MEDAL IN MEXICO 1980 Collegiate Choral Festival in Mexico City with a bronze medal. The choir was awarded the medal for its performance in competition with outstanding choral groups from the United States. The group also gave concerts at the University of Mexico and the city's Church of San Francisco, and sang for the Easter mass in the Cathedral of Mexico. "I was extremely excited by the quality of singing by our choir," exclaimed an elated Dr. Loren Filbeck, director. "In addition, it was a wonderful learning experience for everyone." "PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE" A series of one-act plays from the "Past, SET TO OPEN APRIL 23 Present and Future" will be presented at Cal State by the Players of the Pear Garden, opening Wednesday, April 23. Other performances are set for April 2A-27. The curtain time will be 8:15 p.m., in Room IA3 of the Creative Arts Building except for the Sunday performance which will be a 2 p.m. matinee. MORE THAN 500 HIGH SCHOOL More than 500 area high school students will STUDENTS TO BE ON CAMPUS participate in a Cal State-hosted choral festival Wednesday, April 23. The day-long event will take place in the Recital Hall of the Creative Arts Building and will involve students from a dozen area high schools. Performances will be adjudicated by Dr. William Hall, director of the William Hall Chorale, a highly acclaimed touring ensemble. Dr. Hall, who is also professor of music at Chapman College, will work with each of the groups providing a musical critique.

Frances Coles (Sociology) spoke to the San Bernardino Optimist Club Tuesday April 15 on 'Criminal Law in the Contemporary Society." Paul Johnson (Philosophy) addressed a group of organ students at Crafton Hills College Tuesday, April 15. His topic was titled "On Relaxation," [publications Dominic Bulgarel la (.Sociology) presented a paper at the Pacific Sociological Association meeting in San Francisco _. ^ April 11. The paper was titled "The Longitudinal Effects of Seventy On Rel igiousity." Robert Blackey (History) has a book review of James Burgh: Spokesman for Reform in Hanoverian England by Carla H. Hay in the Winter, 1979 issue of Albion Magazine. David Shichor (Sociology) has an article titled "The New Criminology: Critical Issues" in the January, I98O issue of the British Journal of Criminology. Some Amer El-Ahraf (Health Science) has a paper titled "On the Sanitarian Leadership of the Environmental Health Field" in the January/February I98O issue of the Journal of Environmental Health.
