I became involved as a volunteer in 2001 when my hospital was experiencing a staffing and safety crisis equal to what hospitals throughout the state are experiencing currently. I was proud to be involved in the original Staffing Law and have been a strong advocate of safe staffing for many years. At the local level I have had the privilege of working with my peers to negotiate contracts, settle grievances and work with management (when possible) to solve issues and concerns in house. I believe that nurses need a strong advocate at all levels. ONA is a growing organization with many challenges as we move toward the future. I would be proud to have a part in shaping that future and believe that as the President of ONA I can not only be that advocate but can help shape programs that will carry our vision far into the future. But, also, I want the east side of the state nurses to be heard. Don t get me wrong we all have the same issues in nursing, but at different levels. The east side of the state have critical access hospital which provides its own problems. We are seeing a nursing shortage due to many do not want to live in small rural areas and the baby boomers are retiring. Some may say the lack of cultural, but if you want a slow, laid back way of life then Eastern Oregon is for you. I have been peripherally involved with ONA health policy activities since joining as a student affiliate in 2010, and have seen firsthand the immense impact the organization has had in shaping health policy in our state. My advocacy efforts have included regularly attending Nurse Lobby Day, testifying in the legislature, writing letters to the editor, speaking at a federal legislator s press conference, volunteering for a variety of campaigns, and most recently participating in a media commercial shoot for the Measure 101 campaign. I have been privileged to be a leader in my workplace and have seen positive changes, as well as worrisome trends. As a candidate for the Human Rights and Ethics Cabinet, I intend to work towards increasing our diversity, access to educational opportunities, protecting patients safety and rights to medical care. We have many unmet needs for housing, drug and alcohol treatment, primary care providers, and mental health providers. Attracting, empowering, and mentoring new nurses is essential. Nurses work hard, and I want to ensure that Oregon nurses have the professional respect and resources they need to meet today s challenges. Page 15

As a charge nurse, steward, bargaining team member and member of the E&GW Cabinet I believe I have a good understanding of many of these issues and am capable of and willing to advocate for interests. Susan Phillips CC, CN, SC Providence Portland Medical Center I have been an ONA member and activist at Providence Portland Medical Center for 33 years. I have had several roles in the local bargaining unit, including executive team chair, PNCC chair and task force member. I have also served as a CA 1 officer, delegate and as an ANA delegate 2008-2012. I am interested in being involved at the national level. I am very concerned about policy changes that may impact health care and the workplace. I would be honored to serve and represent Oregon nurses. Dan Richmond, BSN, CMS Providence Medford Medical Center Medford, OR In 2016 I received the ONA Internal Organizer award for my efforts and success as an active ONA member during the PMMC-ONA 2015 Contract campaign to build collective power and for nurses to win a fair contract. In 2015 I received PMMC s highest nursing honor The Nancy Roberts Award for Nursing Excellence for my efforts and success as a staff nurse, mentor, educator, and injury prevention. I want nurses to build collective power. I am a firm believer in ONA, the power of collective action, and that direct care nurses will be at the forefront for better healthcare in this country. I will bring 12 years of diverse nursing experience and pragmatism to the table and represent not just ONA, but ONA s to the best of my ability as a delegate. Page 16
