Vimal Chaitanya, Director, Energy Research Lab, New Mexico State University Kelvin Droegemeier, Vice President for Research, University of Oklahoma Peter Schiffer, Vice Chancellor for Research, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign The global challenges we face today require broadly multi-disciplinary approaches for solutions. One mechanism universities use to foster multidisciplinary research is through the establishment of centers and institutes to cross disciplinary, department, and college boundaries. However, breaking down disciplinary silos also brings a host of challenges, and we all recognize great successes and spectacular failures in areas such as P&T contribution, F&A distribution, center/institute evaluation, credit on funding and publications, competition with academic units, reporting of research faculty, etc. This session will address opportunities and challenges with the center/institute approach among other related topics. 12:00 PM 1:00 PM Lunch and Break Exposition Hall A (Remarks by Dan Janick, COO and CFO, Academic Analytics.) 1:00 PM 2:15 PM Session III Silver Baron 1-6 Matching Innovation and Capital for Growth Organizer: Mridul Gautam, Vice President for Research and Innovation, University of Nevada, Reno Jodi Black, Deputy Director, Office of Extramural Research, National Institutes of Health Sandra Brown, Vice Chancellor for Research, University of California, San Diego Steve Flaim, Chairman Emeritus, Tech Coast Angels and Director, Angel Capital Association Paul Roben, Associate Vice Chancellor for Innovation and Commercialization, University of California, San Diego This session will address why it is so difficult for angel investors to see the value of investing in technology coming out of universities with a particular focus on early-stage tech and high-risk/high-reward projects along with how barriers between universities and angel/capital groups can be reduced. Best practices for innovation on campus, including seed funding and finding the right community partners, will also be discussed. 3

The conversation will then shift to presenting case studies and partnership examples from three different institutions as to how they are approaching open data and public access concerns. This will include specific actions that institutions can take, such as how VPRs are working to bridge/establish partnerships between different organizational units on campus, including sponsored programs, libraries, and IT. We will convey specific examples of cohesive integration and engagement. 4

We will present information useful for campuses yet to address CUI or who are in the beginning stages of implementing new policies and procedures. Lunch Roundtable: Science Advocacy Silver Baron 1-6 David Conover, Vice President for Research and Innovation, University of Oregon Anna Quider, Director of Federal Relations, Northern Illinois University Terri Goss Kinzy, Vice President for Research, Rutgers University Mark McLellan, Vice President for Research, Utah State University Jennifer Poulakidas, Vice President for Congressional and Governmental Affairs, APLU 2:00 PM 2:15 PM Break This session will focus on political activism and advocacy for science, including how to channel the enthusiasm of students and researchers to engage (processes, procedures, support to faculty), institutional responses, and lessons learned from the March for Science. 5

2:15 PM 3:30 PM Session VII Silver Baron 1-6 Value Proposition: Working with Engagement; Communicating Outcomes and Impact to the Public Kelvin Droegemeier, Vice President for Research, University of Oklahoma Fred King, Vice President for Research, West Virginia University Daniel Reed, Vice President for Research and Economic Development, University of Iowa Speaker: Ann Silver, Chief Executive Officer, Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce 3:30 PM 3:45 PM Break In this session, we take an arguably fresh approach to the value proposition question how do research universities appropriately and effectively convey their value to those on whom their very existence depends: lawmakers, policymakers, parents, students, businesses, and the general public? not only by placing ourselves, as research officers, in the position of constituents, but by engaging directly the constituents in a discussion that emphasizes their priorities, their concerns, their struggles, and their views of what research universities are or are not. The overall goal is for research officers to gain a much better appreciation, by active listening, regarding views held by the general public of universities and research, and also by conveying to members of the public ways in which universities, and research, are contributing to solving problems, or addressing issues in their daily lives. A particularly important point in this regard is the rather long time needed for research outcomes and impacts to be manifest in practical ways, relative to the nearer term, pressing issues faced by the public. 3:45 PM 5:00 PM Session VIII Silver Baron 1-6 Federal Update: New Administration and 115 th Congress Jennifer Poulakidas, Vice President for Congressional and Governmental Affairs, APLU Anna Quider, Director of Federal Relations, Northern Illinois University Kalliat Valsaraj, Vice President for Research and Economic Development, Louisiana State University Speaker: Matt Hourihan, Director of the R&D Budget and Policy Program, AAAS 6

This session will focus on current research policy-related issues, including the President s Budget Request for Fiscal Year 2018 and the associated impact on federal funding for science/public research universities; and the Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs of federally-sponsored university research. Wednesday, July 12 7:30 AM 9:00 AM Concurrent Breakfasts 9:00 AM 9:15 AM Break Breakfast (General) (All CoR attendees welcome.) Associate VPR Breakfast II (Breakfast meeting for Associate VPRs.) Silver Baron E Silver Baron B 9:15 AM 10:30 AM Session IX Silver Baron 1-6 Large Proposal Development: Best Practices for Support Mridul Gautam, Vice President for Research and Innovation, University of Nevada, Reno Chris Keane, Vice President for Research, Washington State University Janet Nelson, Vice President for Research and Economic Development, University of Idaho Daniel Reed, Vice President for Research and Economic Development, University of Iowa Faith Kirkham Hawkins, Associate Vice President for Research, Strategic Research Initiatives, Indiana University Michelle Popowitz, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research and Executive Director, UCLA Grand Challenges This session will address the opportunities and challenges associated with large proposal development, such as assembling multidisciplinary research teams and building support with state, local, and industrial stakeholders essential to proposal success. We will discuss team building and stakeholder engagement; proposal development and formulation; and proposal execution and long-term sustainability of large team efforts from both the small/medium and large-scale university perspectives. 7

10:30 AM 10:45 AM Break 10:45 AM 12:00 PM Session X Silver Baron 1-6 Discussion of APLU s Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness, and Economic Prosperity (CICEP) Tech Transfer Evolution Working Group Paul Roben, Associate Vice Chancellor for Innovation and Commercialization, University of California, San Diego Jim Woodell, Vice President for Economic Development and Community Engagement, APLU Sethuraman Panch Panchanathan, Chair of the Council on Research and Executive Vice President, Arizona State University Caroline Whitacre, Senior Vice President for Research, The Ohio State University University leaders are increasingly responding to the needs of the innovation economy, and in particular their local economy, by including innovation, entrepreneurship and economic engagement programming in their strategic planning processes. At the same time, budget and resource threats to the university research enterprises are driving increased pressure on revenue generation from licensing and innovation activities. It is in the best interest of technology transfer offices to acknowledge these forces and to reinvent themselves to meet the evolving opportunities and challenges presented by these trends effectively taking on new characteristics and functions to evolve toward broader economic engagement offices. The focus will shift from licensing to support of the larger missions of the university. We believe this will involve a deeper engagement with industry and other community partners; broadening of activities to areas such as undergraduate education, technology development and entrepreneurship; and a deeper integration with other supportive administrative functions such as industry contracting. 8
